Hear me out regarding Pass Rush

Thanks for the post @Indeee.  It is an interesting idea and, having read the OP I did wonder what the reason was myself, while assuming there was an obvious reason I was missing! haha

Its frustrating sometimes to see when a question is asked, out of interest and as a point for discussion, it can be derided and dismissed on here.  Admittedly some posts do cross the line and some are just trolling, but this was not one of them.

Thanks to @Fisticuffs111, @Valpo2004@zibby43, @NewColtsFan, @Lucky Colts Fan and others for thought out responses, which I enjoyed reading.

This is the kind of out-of-the-box thinking that could lead to the next crop of great pass-rushers.

The talent has to be out there somewhere.  Hockey players?  MMA fighters?  Ninjas?

The NFL is willing to pay, and where there's a demand...

I understand to some this may be a stupid post, however it is serious in it's intent and involves an interesting dynamic where coaching and player development are concerned.

I'm going to list 2 known pass rushers whom have had success in the nfl so far along side their measurable of weight and height

Von Miller: 6'3 250

J. Clowney: 6'5 270

In comparison I'm now going to list 2 players currently on Colts rosters, who have been experimented with for a couple years now. One player has been here for a couple years and the other is a newer addition. I'm also going to list their measurable in comparison to the 2 players listed above.

Eric Swoope: 6'5 258 ( previous basketball player )

Ross Travis: 6'7 235 ( previous basketball player )

Both players have Basketball ability where their positioning have been big man oriented. Fighting for positioning, rebounding etc. Body on body contact

Both are in height qualifications especially when playing from a standing position where wing span comes into play not only for batting down passes but also reachability to grasp defenders.

Travis would need to bulk up and add weight/muscle which should not take much

My question is this: Why hasn't anyone ever thought to potentially teach, coach, transform these 2 guys into pass rushers?

It just seems odd, that in a league where pass rushers are not really accessible that some teams would attempt to take players blessed with measurable and transform them. it happens with other positions sometimes, why can't the colts staff transform these 2 into outside LB assets?

Well I heard you out.

I wish I hadn't.   The time it took me to read your post was a waste and I could actually feel my IQ dropping the more I read.  I can never get the time back and I'm hoping the drop in IQ is not permanent.

I agree. Andrew Luck is 6-5 240. If he can't throw anymore theres no reason he cant be a TE or OLB. Get me Irsay on the phone.

Strangely, my post that was intended for another string ended up here.  I tried to delete it, but the folks who run this site won't let me.  They demand I post something here.  So here's some worthless baloney to waste everyone's time rather than simply let me copy and paste my post to the intended string.  (Don't complain to me, complain to management.)

I'm now getting on the train with drafting Bradley Chubb as long as he tests very well at the combine and shows good athleticism. If he could be our Joey Bosa, but possibly even better, then we have to get this guy to lead our pass rush.

If Ballard thinks he can trade down a few spots and still get him due to these teams drafting early needing QB help, then that would be a home run!

Yeah. A TE should be able to transform into a stud 15 sack a year EDGE rusher. Or what about me ? I played all 3 sports in HS. Always been fast and athletic for a white dude. Plus I'm ideal size for a RB at around  5'10 205. You think I could try out as a RB ? Or my buddy C-Rich was our SF in basketball, and WR and DE in football. He's freaking huge now. 6'4 probably 240 and a freak athlete. Could he come too and try out as an EDGE rusher ? He's got the measurable and athletic ability ????

you and your buddy could have this season and it wouldn't have changed the results much.

I'd consider them for pass rush if they were wrestlers that were very athletic as opposed to basketball players, IMO. Wrestlers understand leverage, hand punch and positioning, and to an extent bend as well. Wrestling background helps more with the defensive trenches in football, and there is probably precedent to that as well (Terrance Taylor, I am sure there are other examples too). Of course, how good you were at doing what you were doing ultimately matters, and a football background has to be there to build upon.

Joe Reitz was a former TE/basketball player too, that translates better to OL play and movement in space, probably more for a ZBS OL than a power scheme OL, I would have to say.

    • Any worries about rumored shoulder issue?
    • I knew I had a favorite last year, but I thought I would be good with whoever the Colts picked... and this was until the odds for the Colts picking Levis hit -4000 or something of the sort about half an hour before the draft and my heart completely dropped. In a way I'm happy the odds-makers completely missed on this one... it showed me how I really felt about those players and made me even more appreciative for us drafting Richardson an hour later.    So... you would be good with any of them... but who do you REALLY want?    On your question... if I had to guess, most Colts fans haven't watched this QB draft extensively. I know I haven't. So his statistical profile doesn't scream 1st rounder so... possibly why not many people really like him. Also keep in mind that this is compared to the other 3. 2 of them have been crowned as the next big thing for a while now and the third one won the Heismann with some exceptional performaces throughout the year.
    • My sleepers: (meaning, the kind of players coaches would like to have, more than what consensus big board gives credit to them. Some of them might need couple of years to attain their high potential, if drafted into suitable coaching environment, so a lot depends on that. Some of them have injury concerns too).   Most of them are high IQ players or high-effort, high-motor players - two traits I look for from the Drafted players, list is long but I like these guys.. gonna be interesting to see where they land and how it works out for them in long run.    Payton Wilson, LB, NC State Caelen Carson, CB, Wake Forest Kiran Amegadjie, OT, Yale Maason Smith, IDL, LSU Christian Mahogany, OG, Boston College Max Melton, CB, Rutgers Zak Zinter, OG, Michigan Bucky Irving, RB, Oregon Khyree Jackson, CB Oregon Dylan McMahon, C, NC State (good fit for Browns)  Tykee Smith, SAF, Georgia Ainias Smith, WR, Texas A&M Cam Hart, CB, Notre Dame Michael Barrett, LB Michigan Malachi Corley, WR, Western Kentucky Beaux Limmer, IOL, Arkansas   Kamren Kinchens, S, Miami McKinnley Jackson, IDL, Texas A&M Kalen King, CB, Penn State Justin Eboigbe, IDL, Alabama    Jacob Cowing, WR, Arizona Beau Brade, SAF, Maryland Isaac Guerendo, RB, Louisville Jalyx Hunt, EDGE, Houston Christian (I'm hoping for day 3 Vikings pickup, as Flores could work wonders with him)  Jaheim Bell, TE, Florida State Brennan Jackson, EDGE, Washington State  Delmar Glaze, OT, Maryland Myles Cole, EDGE, Texas Tech Kristian Boyd, DT, Northern Iowa Javontae Jean-Baptiste, DL, Notre Dame Jordan Magee, LB, Temple Myles Harden, CB, South Dakota Jalen Green, EDGE, James Madison (UDFA Target prospect)  Trey Taylor, S, Air Force (UDFA prospect) Eyabi Okie-Anoma, EDGE, Charlotte Qwan'tez Stiggers, CB, Toronto  Sundiata Anderson, EDGE, Grambling State  Daequan Hardy, CB, Penn State (Special Teams, Returner)  Emani Bailey, RB, TCU   As for Vikings, I don't wanna rush to draft QB if the team isn't confident in the guys they could move up in draft range, and I'd like to just draft impact players that build the roster at this point.   Build the team, draft a franchise QB at right time, don't rush and ruin years trying to make someone work out in the NFL.
    • If you are relying upon history, does accuracy matter?  I think the reason Smith ended up at RT is because the coaches tried him there out of necessity and he played well, and stayed there due to the coaches wishes.  I don't think that FO guys had much to say about it, because Smith was in fact drafted to be a G, not the RT.  Ballard's own words after day 2 of that draft was that they drafted Smith a bit higher than they had him ranked, because he was the "last remaining starting caliber G on the board".   So it does fit that Smith was not drafted by Ballard or the FO to be a RT...in part because of the measurables and arm length.   Also directing this response to @Matthew Gilbert
