McShay's First 2018 Mock Draft.....

Recommended Posts

So.....

Now that college football's regular season is over,  Todd McShay has released his first mock.

And with the 3rd overall pick,  McShay gives the Colts,  Bradley Chubb,  the DE from NC State.     McShay has Chubb as the Best Player Available behind Darnold and Rosen.

But wait....

That was the pick on ESPN.com....      on actual ESPN television, McShay said picking 3rd would give the Colts a great chance to trade back (which his mocks do not reflect)  and pick up draft picks.     That's what he's expecting the Colts to do.

McShay noted the Colts have so many pressing needs that trading back makes the most sense for the team.

Yeah that seems to be the hot pick for us right now, much like how Dalvin Cook was around this time last year. I also saw an article which may have also been from ESPN, where they were saying that the Colts winning would be a bad thing because they could play themselves out of being able to get Chubb. I try and stay open minded so maybe I'll have to re-evaluate Chubb

Well.....     no matter who is there, or not there,  what picking 3-5 might do is give us a chance to trade down.......

And that might turn out to be the best thing for the Colts to do in the long run.....

Just thinking out loud....

Chubb is more of a 43 RDE.  I can see some teams may value him highly and offer a trade.  Not a huge deal like for a QB, but enough for us to maybe pick up an extra 2 and 4.

I think it's possible for the Colts to draft Chubb and then move him to Safety where Hooker is clearly a bust.

Maybe we can snooker another team into giving us a 7 for Hooker.      I think we've seen enough to know how terrible he is.       Chubb can be the intimidator in the middle of the field.

IMO I don't think we have seen enough of Hooker to come to the conclusion of him being a bust. On average it normally takes two or three seasons for a player to learn his position and adjust to the NFL.

With that said we can always use a player like Chubb. Depth is something that we are in dire need of and Hooker could fill that need if need be. If Chubb is drafted let the two compete for the position.

Clearly you have to see his sarcasm, no?

One is a safety and one is a 4-3 End or 3-4 OLB not sure how they would compete.

CC....

I was trying to be sarcastic with my friend Doug Dew who has hated the Hooker pick since we made it.

He rarely lets an opportunity go by without criticizing our taking Hooker.    I thought the idea of drafting Chubb and making him play safety was the obvious joke.

No biggie...   just want to clarify...

No problem, I just didn't pick up on the sarcasm. Thanks for clarifying.

Well the first clue, and it is a big one, was the suggestion that they move a highly rated college DE who happens to go about 275 to safety.

Your point? I already talked this over with NCF and explained what I thought. He corrected me but I guess you didn't catch that.

Is this really worth making an issue out of it to you?

To be fair if you assume the Colts stay at #3 then Chubb is the most realistic possibility.

But trading down to a team who's in love with Chubb, Barkely or a QB is the best case scenario for Indy.

Agreed because I really think Nelson is a plug and play all-pro center. He brings a level of toughness and nasty that we need.

Based on the draft value chart I was looking at.  If we traded down to say #9 we could get a 2nd rounder this year and a 2nd rounder next year as compensation.

I think at #9 we might still be in the range to get Nelson.

But yes we clearly need OL help.

Nope. Chubb. You can get a great RB later. There will be no great pass rushers after the first round. Unless you get blindly lucky. Chubb all day.

Barkley is definitely in play with us picking number 3 now. Like Nelson, he’s a blue chip talent. Plus we could get a good guard in the 2nd round like Hernandez. Plus Harold Landry might fall to the 2nd.

    • It’s unfortunate when they just got their first win. If Lewis and paye can’t go we basically only have one DE. No rotation so Steelers will just wear this term down. I was do excited for this game now I am really mad. I was really looking forward to it. The offense might be able to make up for defense but not if Kelly and smith can go.
    • This is where quality of your coach is so important.  And I think Shane is a quality coach to handle this situation.  Also I agree he is doing it right.  It's ugly, but he is balancing a big investment at QB with his job security which is very tough.   Running QBs often reach that point where the staff decides they are never going to learn to win from the pocket, and it is then you see the scheme revert back to college type approach and general simplicity to allow them to translate to the field.  But to get to that point you need to at least give the QB the opportunity.  Because once they do reach that point the team will usually be looking for another QB.   The way you build a perennial winner is finding a QB who can give you an edge from the pocket.  Given that, mobility and off schedule instincts are an advantage and desired.  But the latter will never trump the former because if your QB needs to be in space to see the defense and make his throws then defenses will be able to shut him down in the playoffs.  QBs like that don't win 3 or 4 games in a row against the best defenses in the league, which is required to hoist a Lombardi.   I mean look at Allen.  He developed the ability to win from the pocket.  He has had good teams around him.  He is a dominant run threat.  And he still has come up short in the playoffs.  When there are guys like him and Mahomes with rosters around them, you aren't gonna get past them with a QB who can't do the job from the pocket.
    • I compared AR to Mike Vick recently but didn't get alot of reaction.   AR may never fix his accuracy issues like Vick who struggled with short and intermediate accuracy his entire career.    But Vick was a dynamic runner and could hit the deep bombs with just a flick of the wrist.   Vick resurrected a very sad Falcons franchise and I was a huge fan.   If AR became Vick 2.0 would Colts fans be happy ? I would be
    • Seems like this team gets a lot of untimely injuries that come out of nowhere. Smith and Kelly, Lewis injuries just appeared out of nowhere. None of those injuries were even mentioned after the Bears game.   Hopefully Smith and Lewis plays because that means more reps for Bryan and Freeland. 😭
    • Yep. He must of woke up Thursday with it. I assume Pinter will play center if he can’t go. That tackle slot is worrisome if smith can’t go. The defense is looking ridiculously banged up.
