The Americn Flag Football League Launch -Your Thoughts

Recommended Posts

Plans are in the works for a new American Flag Football League featuring former NFL players, and it’s a fantastic idea. Retired quarterback Michael Vick and running back Justin Forsett will play in a test game in June, according to ESPN’s Darren Rovell.

The game will be played on June 27 at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, Calif. Unfortunately, it won’t air live on television. But it will be available to stream after the game, and we will absolutely watch the hell out of it.

Financier Jeff Lewis is the man behind the American Flag Football League, and he got the idea from watching his young son play flag football. The league will field eight different teams and will launch in 2018.

The idea of a flag football league featuring players with actual NFL experience was very appealing to Lewis, and for good reason.

"I just thought to myself, 'what would this look like if great athletes played this?'" Lewis said, via Rovell. "There's certainly a huge pool to take guys from. Every single year, NFL teams cut 800 guys. We need less than 100 players to field eight teams."

The league won’t be limited to former pros, though.

"We'll try to find a 60-year-old guy with a beer gut who can stand in and be a quarterback of one of our teams," Lewis said.

Finally, a chance for the Monday morning quarterback you know to get his shot.

The games will be in a 7-on-7 format and will be played on a regulation field for a full 60 minutes.

Vick isn’t just committed to playing quarterback for one of the teams in the inaugural game. He joins former NFL players Isaiah Kacyvenski, Rob Konrad, and Donovin Darius as advisers for the league.

Flag football is fun, no matter who’s playing it. Mixing in elite athletes like Vick and Forsett just means that we can’t wait until the American Flag Football League is up and running.
