Dontari Poe scheduled to visit

I would think he'd want to stay in a 3-4, but he probably wants to penetrate more than he's been allowed to the past couple years. Both the Jags and Falcons run a 4-3, similar to Seattle.

He'd probably 2-gap in Seattle/Falcons 4-3 under D. Quinn had Brandon Mebane in that role in Seattle and seems like he wants his own Mebane.

As I said in the other post,  you've changed the argument.

Your first argument was not about elite nose tackle....    it was just about filling the spot.

Here is your sentence,  I'm cutting and pasting it....

"3-4 NT is possibly the hardest position to fill in the nfl next to QB."

well if you are going to be that technical then you can fill any spot easily

sign me up for QB.  I WILL FILL THAT SPOT

of course i was talking about finding players that are actually note worthy.  you can throw guys like parry or chapman at NT and call it good i guess, but good players at that position are more rare than almost anything else

there really hasnt even been an elite NT in the nfl the past few years

I wouldn't be and expect the colts to look for one in free agency or draft. You can't have a guy undersized playing the amount of snaps parry plays getting pounded on almost every play without a guy to help him out.

i concur

Because almost no one puts an athlete with an elite skill set at that position.

The reason:    Because that player gets beaten up by the center and the two guards.     Playing the position is like being in a traffic accident.     So, putting a player with elite skills there is mostly a waste.

Poe is an exception to the rule because he was naturally a NT.    He's 6'3" and 345 without trying to be big.    He just IS big.

Poe is what teams would like to have but he's a unicorn.    You almost never see one.    And this guy is not as he once was.     He has slowly but steadily deteriorated.      That's not typically the case with premium elite pass rushers.

Honestly, Poe's probably getting as many visits as he can. More visits=more dinners=more food for the big man

Lol you may be right. Let all the other teams feed the beast and then he can come to Indy!

Wonder how many teams he visited wanted long term deals...

I don't see why you wouldn't give him a 1 year deal if he wanted it. Seems like most players would rather have the financial security. I'd rather give him a 1 year contract than a 4 year contract personally.

Huh. I don't know about you all but the fact that he wants a 1 year deal and that we were rumored to want him long term, the only team to specifically have been rumored to want him long term as far as rumors go.

I don't care too much one way or the other if we get him, especially on just one year. I know, it's fair and he wants to be able to hit the open market again if he proves his worth. But I don't really want for Ballard, or selfishly us as fans, to go through another Poe FA tour.

My theory on that is this...both Poe and Ballard know that Poe's back is 100%.  Poe knows that if he plays at 100% then he'll have a better season in 2017 than he has the past 2 thus increasing his market value allowing him to get a better long term contract next year than he'd be able to get this year.

Ballard knows this and would prefer to lock him in long term now before his price goes up if he does have a bounce back year this coming season.

Yeah, I could see that. And even if it's not 100%, I could see it just being like it was last season for him, just kind of a minor situation, discomfort that comes and goes, that he can still play through.

For me if he is 100% then pay him as the top NT in the league and sign him long term.  I don't think anybody is willing to make him the highest paid at his position.  I think that's what he wants. If he gets it he will sign a LT deal.  I consider him a foundation player for our defense.  Signing him to a one yr. deal doesn't sound like a foundation piece to me.  So if he is 100% we should pay him.  If not 100% and the only way to get him is the one yr. deal so be it then I bring in Hankins as well.  We are losing Kerr and probably Perry as well and Hankins is a solid young player.

so everything i said is true?  guys like poe or hampton are rare, and sometimes we go years without seeing anyone be that good at the positon

just stop with the coaches dont put good players there.  they cant put a good player there if they dont exist!

your argument does not make sense! if what you said is true then guys like poe or hampton would not play the nose becasue they are too good and the coaches would put them somewhere else????

your unicorn comment is exactly what i am saying

the reports have said the Colts Are trying to sign him long term, but it sounds like that's not what he wants because he thinks he'd get a better long term deal after having a bounce back 2017 season.

The crazy thing is that he could get even more money not only by playing well on a one year deal but by salary cap rise alone (Doesn't it increase consistently every year nowadays?)

If this is true, then that means he believes he is healthy and he will be motivated to produce this upcoming season. Sign that guy immediately. Worst case scenario is he plays well and leaves in FA...giving the Colts a very high comp pick.

    • i rather the colts keep investing in offensive line and defense .   patriots for years did the right thing by  keeping solid but not great wrs and investing in defense and the line .   never pay for running backs keep drafting and same with wrs keep some cheap veterans and young guys .
    • you dont trust ballard you dont think he knows his plan already .  the next year when needed to sign leonard nelson and smith , AC will take off 16 million cap space kelly drops down per year and glow is gone houston autry rhodes gone plus rivers gone .  that can be well over 65 million in new cap space . the key to keeping a team going is the draft look at the ravens they lost tons of great defenders in the early 2012 range and hit in the draft and now they still have a elite defense .
    • You may be right.   But improved upon by free agency and not the draft likely means more money.  In some cases much more money depending on the player.      That formula of how much more money vs how much more performance is the math that makes or breaks many GM’s.
    • my main point is  a lot of these guys on this list are dirt cheap .   even the veterans who are playing well are old so they will be cheap .  plus your not counting the draft .   we could still resign houston autry rhodes plus keep a  lot of cheap depth guys and be okay .  houston is making 8 million a year and now he is two years older and his sack numbers are gonna drop from last year we could get him for 5 million autry for 7 and rhodes for 7 and still have 21 million to sign a bunch of cheap depth guys like cox harris pascal muhammad and go get a cheap veteran wr
    • While those are good points I think it all depends on who is there at their pick. If a LT worth the #1 pick get him. It's not a sure thing that AC will be here. He may retire. IMO his play has deteriorated, may be age related? Rookie contract also enters the picture. Do we blitz enough to need a 1st rd pass rusher in this defense? We get plenty of pressure rushing 4.    Plus did Rhodes earn more than a 1 year deal? I am sure he will have a couple of teams that will sign him as good as he has played. He was signed to a prove it deal and he proved it.   Plus you can ignore Ballard may be looking to make a deal up or down in the first round. Lots of direction this draft could turn.
