I should go with BPA here because I love the player but I will instead opt to fill what will be a need in a couple of weeks.

With the 86th pick, the Vikings select D'Onta Foreman, RB Texas.

@twfish and the Giants are on the clock.

Very surprised he lasted this long

I know Mixon was picked a bit ago. But whose big board is that? I don't see him on it at all

It was FanSpeak's board and they had him outside the top 200. CBSSports had him within the Top 100. That is how far sites are on a controversial player like Mixon.

That is also the reason why GMs should do their own research as well and not rely on a Big Board.

The Raiders really need an ILB, so I hope they get one if FA, because value hasn't been there all draft long, and right now Alex Anzalone would be a good pick, but I don't trust that he'll stay healthy at all.  So...

With the 88th Pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders select Howard Wilson, CB, from the University of Houston.

@indyagent17 - As of 11:45am, the Houston Texans are now on the clock.

Yeah, that is why I feel it would be a mistake for the Colts to not get the RB they want in round 3, doesn't have to be Foreman. The drop off in the pass rusher quality is significant, IMO, compared to the upside of the RBs that would be available in round 3, so BPA might be an RB at that point in time.

Now that I see this draft unfold with different GMs, I personally wouldn't want the Colts to wait till round 4 IF we do plan on getting an RB unless we bring back both Gore and Turbin and sign a FA RB like Woodhead.

Im really not a fan of Foreman. Unless his combine times surprise me, i see a 2 down and goalline back. That makes him 4th round to me. He will be valuable situationally, but if im taking a rb in the 3rd or highrer, i want 3 down potential, and i dont think foreman has it. Just my opinion.

Alright, I'll defect :) and go with Kendall Beckwith, ILB, LSU to move on with the draft.

With the 81st pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins select:

Kendall Beckwith, ILB, LSU

Sorry about that.  I wasn't around my computer last night and I live in the MST time zone, so I missed the pick.  Apologies for making you all wait

I might have accidentally deleted it, sorry about that. I had to keep making space for future messages and sometimes I forget if it is for the immediate round coming up or future rounds when I skim through the subjects.

Now that you are here, can you make the pick?

While participating in this, I noticed that many of the GMs who believe in drafting BPA actually do not select BPA according to the Big Board that is posted in this thread. I noticed that when it is time for selecting a consensus pick, what is discussed are the needs of the team rather than "let's see who is the BPA on the board". Why is that? Why not just select BPA as long as it makes sense for the team?  (I was just wondering.)

The BPA beyond the first few rounds can be overemphasized, IMO.

Kelvin Hayden was rated 4-5th rounder and Polian got him in round 2. Pat Angerer was similarly rated and Polian got him in round 2, many  more examples that I can give.

If that fourth or fifth round rated player can fulfill a need of your team that he will end up just as productive as a higher round player for your team's benefits, and if you believe in him, then you take him in round 2 or 3.

Heck, it sometimes happens in round 1 too - Bruce Irvin for Seahawks (late 1st to 3rd round), Travis Frederick, Center for Cowboys (high 2nd to low 3rd) are all examples of players rated to go slightly later. Marlin Jackson, our former 1st rounder was rated to go in the 2nd. However, those teams worked them out and felt their upside was as good as a first rounder and that those players would do well with their system to the extent of a first rounder, so they pulled the trigger.

For example I knew Houston needed a good number 2 receiver behind Hopkins period I'm not sold on Fuller so I looked at all the receivers available and compared them and I came up with my pick. The best available is not always the best player at the time for a team

Thanks for that. I have no problem drafting for need. Actually I lean that way.

But most people here are strongly for drafting BPA, but when they were making selections, the players drafted mostly addressed needs. (Not always but many of the picks did.) Even in the first round, whenever we had to make a consensus pick, we asked ourselves what the team's needs were as opposed to "who the BPA is". So, I just wondered if people truly believed in drafting BPA as opposed to drafting BPA at a position of need.

If the BPA is subjective, then decisions are subjective. If the Big Board varies from one site to another, you can bet the Big Board varies from one GM to another, even if it is by about 5-10 picks early on in the draft.

That is why most GMs have no problem going for need close to a ballpark of value. The assumption that BPA is black and white is the real notion that is mistaken, IMO.

My thoughts are:

1. It's not maybe realistic to go pure BPA. Most NFL teams do, in some way, adress their biggest remaining needs in the draft.

2. It would be less fun for us to just go BPA. There'd be no stratagizing, haha.

If the BPA is subjective, then decisions are subjective. If the Big Board varies from one site to another, you can bet the Big Board varies from one GM to another, even if it is by about 5-10 picks early on in the draft.

That is why most GMs have no problem going for need close to a ballpark of value.

I appreciate the feedback and I agree. However, that does not explain why when we were making consensus picks we asked what the team's needs were as opposed to looking to see which player was BPA. I am just challenging the notion that a GM must take BPA all the time.

There was a guy named Jim S last year who wanted the Colts to draft Conklin. For him, he felt Conklin addressed one of the Colts' biggest needs. He was arguing for selecting for need rather than BPA. Many gave Jim such a hard time.

My thoughts are:

1. It's not maybe realistic to go pure BPA. Most NFL teams do, in some way, adress their biggest remaining needs in the draft.

2. It would be less fun for us to just go BPA. There'd be no stratagizing, haha.

#2 may explain why we looked at positions of need when deciding on consensus picks

Re #1, I agree but in the past there has been great debate here about selecting BPA. I believe in selecting BPA or the best fit at a position of need. However, pure BPA may have more value, especially when there may be a change in coaching. A new coach brings in own schemes, etc.

Surprised he's still here. With Dez Bryant always injured the Cowboys surround Dak with weapons.

The Cowboys select Cooper Kup, WR.

@Traines and the Packers are on the clock

I had a feeling that was coming. Just didn't know much about him as to how good his route running was.

If the majority of the D is devoid of talent like the 49ers, Browns, or even the Colts , I guess best defensive player available makes sense as well.

Thanks for that. I have no problem drafting for need. Actually I lean that way.

But most people here are strongly for drafting BPA, but when they were making selections, the players drafted mostly addressed needs. (Not always but in much of the picks.) Even in the first round, whenever we had to make a concensus pick, we asked ourselves what the team's needs were as opposed to "who the BPA is". So, I just wondered if people truly believed in drafting BPA as opposed to drafting BPA at a position of need.

Well, you have to remember that (a) this is a mock and we are drafting for teams we dont follow and (b) we enjoy mock drafting, so we want to get to our turn rather than argue over what an absentees BPA is holding the game up in the process.

Ultimately, our jobs arent on the line and we dont know every prospect in and out. We resort to the websites for reference, but theres hardly a concensus on anyone outside the 2nd round. So it makes it easier to say, need, then BPA. We could debate every absentee draft pick, but for the sake of all our time, its not worth it.

For example I knew Houston needed a good number 2 receiver behind Hopkins period I'm not sold on Fuller so I looked at all the receivers available and compared them and I came up with my pick. The best available is not always the best player at the time for a team

So, this example is clearly not drafting BPA. You drafted for need.

My asking this was not meant to get people upset or offended. It is to stimulate conversation and get people thinking about this and what actual GMs go through. I just wondered if fans really believed in going exclusively BPA. Now that fans have had the opportunity to be a "GM", have they noticed patterns in how they make their selections. I certainly have noticed some for me. I think I would probably be an impatient GM. I would want to give up picks to move up to get players I want. haha

To the bolded, it actually saves time (no arguing necessary) if you go BPA. Just check the Big Board and decide if the BPA makes sense for the team.

Not if the Big Board is something everyone cannot agree on, that is the subjective nature of the draft. The Big Board is not the truth, just a guide or reference of players available around a subjective ranking. A clear example was Joe Mixon, who was not in the top 200 of this Big Board (from FanSpeak) but is in the Top 100 Big Board of the CBS nfldraftscout.com rankings.

Tampa Bay Bucs chose the U.Conn safety way above their projected ranking and Joe Mixon that wasn't on this list (WarGhost21), so he obviously strongly felt differently.

That was also the reason I specified at the beginning of the draft "you can explain your draft picks if you want to but you don't need to..."

I know. I check out all of them and they all have different grades on all players except the top ones.

My point:  OPC wrote that it is not worth it to argue over players because everyone wants the mock draft to move along. So, for purposes of simply moving the mock draft along, I am arguing that it saves time if you just select the BPA on the board that we are using (the one here).

(Please note: I am NOT suggesting that you should do this. I am simply responding to his saying that taking BPA for the consensus pick takes more time.)

That is 100% correct.
