I'd like Manning for a QB coach and probably as Offensive Coordinator. GM? I'd have to say no simply because he has no experience as a coach of any sort let alone being responsible for roster decisions and scouting other positions

Look around the league, GMs and coaches often do not mix.  You are either a personnel guy or a coach there are not many that have done both.  Also, Manning has been known for his ability to think the game and his study of tape.  I would not bet against him in becoming a great scout/personnel guy.  I would also wager that he has a very detailed understanding of the defensive side of the ball given his position and ability to read defenses.

I agree, which makes the Jaguars decision to make Tom Coughlin their VP such a head-scratcher.

Manning - GM

Gruden - Coach

Dream scenario

Good start, but you have to dream bigger:

Manning - GM
Gruden - Coach

Joe Montana - Offensive Coordinator
Wade Phillips - Defensive Coordinator

Devin Hester - Special Teams Coach
Reggie Wayne - WR Coach

Edgerrin James - HB Coach

Mike Ditka - TE Coach

Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane - OLine Coach

Me - Owner

You do see that more in the VP title though, Elway (former player), Holmgren, Parcells, and I am sure that there are others.  I view the VP role as more of a football czar that gives overall direction of the football operations.  Yes they are decision makers but much more like CEOs than operations managers (GMs in this analogy).  I actually think that Peyton would make a great VP with a strong scouting staff and cap guy.

^ That's what I'm starting to think will happen too.

Jim could be looking for a big splash hire, he even said last year "I could've made a big splash hire" so I think it's been on his mind.

I think he'll fail to get anything done, possibly because the coach in question won't want to work with Grigson. Even if I think he's improved, it seems like Grigson's standing around the league is pretty bad. He'll come back and double down on his support and that'll be that.

According to JMV, the guy Irsay wants is Gruden. There is dialogue currently between the 2 according to what he just said.  Dont think Saban is even in the discussion.  A caller had a question for him that asked would he put the percentage above 50 percent that Gruden ends up here, and he said with what he has been told yes he would put it above 50 percent.

Im not sure I buy it.   But what could possibly be the hold up?  If he pays gruden 9 million a year to be the coach he is crazy.

You would be ok with him as an OC even though he has no coaching experience?

Technically Gruden's still under contract with ESPN. I'm sure that muddies up the waters quite a bit, lots and lots of legal counsel, etc. And $9mil is a lot, but it ain't my money, and it doesn't count against the salary cap, so I'm game.

I'm sure he has an out if offered a head coaching offer

If irsay wants gruden as bad as being reported,  Jim would go help him pack.

Honestly... I wouldn't be surprised if his office were already cleaned out. Any notion that he had before about his job being "safe," he has to realize that's not the case, right? And why would he want to stick around to work for an owner that is literally negotiating with someone to take his place? If I know about it here in Colorado, surely he knows about it. I'd be like "cut me a check for the remainder of my contract, and I'll be on my way." It's not like he'd be unemployed for very long. He may not get another HC gig right away, but he'd definitely get hired by someone as a coordinator, or DBs coach at the very least.

He would certainly get a job,   but he can't quit.  I wouldn't.   You're gonna pay me if I'm in his shoes.

I would love to be in a situation with that kind of money involved.  Lol.

indeed. Kind of like my plant manager got fired but he was still under contract for 3 years so he still gets 100,000 a year for being fired.

Yeah, but it's kind of a bush league move to try and embarrass someone like Saban with hind sight.

I could see the media doing it, though.

It's a legit question.  Holding the receivers would have been rather clever.  I think Saban's reputation would survive.

Read carefully: Saban will never, ever, ever leave Alabama because he is King, Lord and God there and I don't mean just football but over the entire operation If he declares all phones banned on campus then it will be no phones on campus. Wake up and smell the coffee.

I wonder what a Gruden coaching staff would look like? Anyone remember who his coordinators were when he was with the Bucs?

I'm pretty sure that Monte Kiffin was Gruden's DC the entire time that he was the Bucs HC. Raheem Morris and Gus Bradley were on the defensive staff too. I'm unsure about the offensive staff.

Bill Muir was his OC.  He was the colts DC in the early 90's.

Wonder if he'd bring any of them back. Bradley just got fired and isn't getting a HC job. Morris is assistant HC and WRs coach of the Falcons so he may not leave. Kiffin is kind of old though.

I don't think there was any big connection with Kiffin.  Kiffin was already DC in Tampa when Dungy was there.  After Dungy was fired and they traded for Gruden, Gruden simply talked Kiffin into staying and continuing to run the defense for continuity.
