2017 3rd for your upcoming 4th rounder?

Heck, why not give them your first?  This is the last round and you won't be the GM next year anyway for that team, let them worry about it.. heh heh.  In all seriousness though, I would love to get a 4th for next year's 3rd and this year's 7th.

I was really happy to get that DT out of Temple at this pick.  I was trying to trade up to get him, but he fell to me anyway, but after being the in hospital and missing Round 2, I wanted to make up for what would have been a starting C (Ryan Kelly or at worst Nick Martin) for the Colts as best I could still.  I am still open to trade with anyone as there's another Center with potential left.

It's never to early to think about next year's draft!  Scout early!  Scout often!  Com'on man! lol

haha  We already have a poll on the Colts forum, asking which player will be the #1 pick next year.

those guys probably flew off the board because everyone is hoping the colts take them in real life.  IU players went a little early here too

Those would probably get vetoed anyways. Does that ever happen? Teams trading low-4th rounders for future 3d?

Clearly it's not enough compensation with everyone declining the offer. I haven't looked for a specific example, but future picks are devalued by roughly a round as it is, give or take. So I don't think it's unusual. Maybe I am wrong.

The Colts traded a future 4th round pick for a 5th rounder straight up in 2013, so there's precedent for the trade.

I'm not sure that's the case, but if it is - this is a huge draft inefficiency and should be exploited by smart GMs. WIth some small exceptions, I would always take that trade. In the long run you will kill the league with that strategy.

Well, to be fair, I think the first and second round are exceptions.  I think most GMs would never trade a future 1st for a 2nd round pick unless they're a backhalf team who is moving to get into the top 10 of the 2nd.  They are devalued, but probably not by an entire round.  I think it's fair when it comes to sending furture 3rds because the likelihood of those players being more than role players is fairly limited.  The perceived value - if you can break it down to a formula - from 1 pick to the next is much less than it is in the first two rounds.

In this case, it makes a ton of sense when you have a guy you already have graded as a mid-3rd round prospect who has fallen into the mid-4th or later.  He's a good scheme fit for the Jets and his skillset would translate better on their team, which is why I have him rated a little higher than the early 4th he's being projected as.  So lets say, on their board he is the 85th best prospect on their board, you give up next year's 3rd to get him in the 4th.  Next year, when the draft rolls around, if you place about the same, you lose basically nothing (to say nothing about how he actually pans out).  If you are drafting 10th, you lose 15 spots of value.  Of course you can't predict where you draft next year, which is why figuring out the value actually lost is irrelevant to whether the trade is made today.  The bottom line is, you got two 3rd round prospects in your eyes.  Whether its' in the same year or different years is really not that important.

The problem with that logic is that even if you think you are getting a 3d round prospect in the 4th, you don't know what next year's third would be like. For all intents and purposes(and I must assume it's almost ALWAYS the case, because of how different different team's boards are), next year you are likely get someone you value as a second-rounder with the third you just shipped in order to take someone you value as third rounder in the fourth.

So the bottom line for such a scenario would be - 2 thirds value vs 2nd and third value. Players slip in every draft and in every draft I would assume we take players that are much higher on our board than the position they are taken at. If you start with that assumption it's almost inexcusable trading higher round pick for lower round pick(again with some minor exceptions(say a perceived 1st drops to the 4th).

i think part of the issue is this is a mock and no one really cares about next years picks.  i know there have been some of those trades already, but they seemed  realistic enough that no one made a big deal out of it

in real life a future third could probably get you a fourth right now, but it seems pretty sketchy for this mock.  why not just trade everything next year for more picks now?

No, you don't know what it will be like next year.  For all you know, you may be out of a job next year.  So you make reasonable moves and maximize the talent of your team today.  What you could have done with that 2017 3rd end up becoming pointless if you can't build a winning roster long enough to use it.  Some guys fall into the crowd of GMs who are safe for the next 4 or 5 years.  Some have to make something happen in 1 or 2.  The Colts and the Jets GM probably fit the latter category.

Theoretically, I agree with you.  You want to keep your future 3rds because no matter what, a pick 30 spots ahead of another will yield better playing talent than the one 30 spots behind.  That is solid theory.  But it's just that.

@JPFolks made the same quip above.  And I agree with both of you.  There's no consequences for trading the rest of your team's life for today's 4th round pick in a mock.  So teams that are heavily outweighed in the mock GM's favor won't be accepted because they have no use for it.  While this mock is intended to simulate a draft, it's still a game.  and what game is fun if you max out your teams future better than any one else but only make 1 or 2 picks to everyone elses 4 or 5?  I figured this would happen, but I ain't mad.

Theoretically, I agree with you.  You want to keep your future 3rds because no matter what, a pick 30 spots ahead of another will yield better playing talent than the one 30 spots behind.  That is solid theory.  But it's just that.

Very true. That's the reason GMs make stupid deals - job uncertainty and desire to maximize their assets in the present rather than in the long run.

I'd love to see a team try to abuse the system if teams really devalue future assets like that. I'd be all in for Grigson doing it, because I think there is huge unexplored value to be gained.

Well, when you are a guy like Belichick who got so much slack after his first 4 years, and you have a QB that will constantly keep you in the running, you can start rolling over draft picks like that.  If Grigs and Pags can do a lot of damage in the next two drafts and get us where we need to go, I would think it would just be good business to stock up on the future at smaller costs today.  You give up a 4th for a 3rd every year, and every year, you have two 3rd round picks for the price of a 4th.

I can't take it anymore. It's been 16 months now.

I could have dropped a meme, though... my bad.
