Pack Loss Strangely Familiar....and D Still Wins Games

passing yards do not show that offense wins.

The 4 teams that are left standing are all defensive oriented teams.

You got destroyed in this argument.

New England has one of the lowest rated defense in the NFL....Come on man!

..and even the top defenses give up 300 yards passing and 20 points a game..in the modern NFL...not Lance Alworth days where you're living

Getting 5 turnovers and allowing 500 yards and 32 points is NOT good defense unless its Arena Football

Its a new world...

..and 28..you are under arrest....governor....you said you quit this debate 4 posts ago :stop:

Is your word as solid as your argeument???

It takes both a defense and an offense. This argument is silly. If a team has a stronger offense they can succeed with a weaker defense and a team with a stronger defense can succeed with a weaker offense.

But once the game begins it's about the mathcups on the field. A great defense rarely scores enough points in a game to win.

If we use the Ravens Colts 2006 playoff game as one example the Colts offense had 5 drives long enough to score field goals against the toughest defense in the game. The Ravens offense wasn't very good and our defense was on a role. But had the Ravens defense shut down our offense like our defense shut down their offense they could have won. Our offense prevailed over their defense.

And it the Pats Colts playoff game that year the Pats scored 13 points in the second half which is far from a shut out in the second half. The Colts only scored 6 points in the first half, so that was more of a shut out by the Pats defense. The Colts went on to score 32 points in the second half and The Colts won 38-34. How can you say the defense won that game? It took both offense and defense to win.

read the responses in this thread after your post.

D wins games. period.

Giants, NE, SF and Baltimore are all defensive oriented teams and been like that throughout their history. Aside maybe from Frisco in the 80's. but even that had amazing defense. That is why these teams are here in the championship games.

When it comes to playoffs D wins games, not O and not anything else you gonna try to say.

and yes i agree with what the other poster said and what Brady said - NE won all their SB's because of their D.

and there is nothing that you or anyone can do that will prove me wrong.

D baby!!

If you like defense so much why don't you marry it?

I don't know if this has ever been done, but I think it'd be awesome for an opposing player to do a Lambeau Leap into a crowd of Packer fans after a touchdown.

Fred Smoot tried once...

Apparently you get beer dumped on you. I'm in.

Offensive (New England) gets a ticket to indy..

Defense (Baltimore) watches at home on TV

Ravens couldnt score late..couldnt complete passes...Couldnt kick field goals..

Its not your fathers NFL

The best offense wins...3 years in a row now...

Do you just have to get under everyone's skin?? NE's D has been stepping up in the playoffs and won them this game...let's not act like Brady set the world on fire today. 239 yards and NO touchdowns for the first time in 36 games. 23 points is pretty low for a team that averages much more than that. The Ravens lost that game more than the Pats won it. Their D played well enough to win, Lee Evans dropped a TD pass (yes it was swatted but he should have held on), Then their kicker misses a chip shot FG.....

SO, that leaves two very good defensive teams duking it out for the NFC title game....

And I think the Giants have what it takes to stop the Pats. Both they and the Ravens can go toe to toe with the "unstoppable" offense of NE.

My point is still valid. For all the talk of "year of the QB" and "offense wins", only one offensive juggernaut remains in the playoffs. And let's face it, the Pats have been doing it with the best coach in the league for a decade (pukes in mouth). You all would have laughed if anyone had suggested the NFC Title game would be NYG vs. 49ers even at the start of the playoffs!

On the flip side, defensive plays saved the game for the Pats. Ravens receiver had the game-winning TD in his hands and the defender knocks it out, good coverage on the following play. Good teams may lean to the offensive or defensive side, but very rarely are good teams strictly offensive or defensive. On good teams, the offense complements the defense and vice versa. If you rely two much on one side of the ball, it eventually falls apart.

Guys..

New England had one of the worst defense sin the league...Baltimore lived on 'D' and had an average QB

CM.....there was a lot of talk on this thread about how defense rules...and it didnt today...and with few exceptions...it wont

It just doesnt anymore..

JC....The indy perspective is: ...We are going in the correct direction...

The New Orleans...New England..Indy...style fast break offense is where its at...I hope we dont change (With Manning to Luck..we wont)

...What happen 10 or 15 years ago is history...

Rules have handcuffed the 'D;' and indoor stadiums favor offense heavily...

Its almost not argueable

Especially indoors...Top offense will get you that Super Bowl.

Top defense..will get you nice stats and street cred....

The game has changed dramatically....

Yes, and no. If the Giants-49ers game is any indication, it just shows you that when your O is not lighting it up, turnovers on D and ST can change field position and win it for you. The complete team, 9 times out of 10 that plays 60 minutes, wins championships.

Turnovers on D and ST that generate field position are the key to winning championships.

2002 - Bucs' D making plays, 2001, 2003 & 2004 - Pats' D and kicking, 2005 - Steelers' D, 2006 - Colts' D, 2007 - Giants' D, 2008 - Steelers' D, 2009 - Saints' D, 2010 - Packers' D that had turnovers turned into TDs by Aaron Rodgers.

The team that capitalizes on turnovers created the best wins championships. But the D or ST has to generate the favorable field position first. That has been winning championships most of the time.

But the offense must turn the field position and turnovers into points. Why can't folks agree that it takes a strong offense and defense to win in the playoffs - Superbowl. Some number from this year.

Delense Points Allowed:

1. Pit

2. San Fran

3. Baltimore

4. Houston

5. Carolina

Offense Points Scored:

1. Green Bay

2. New Orleans

3. New England

4. Detriot

5. Carolina

Defense yards allowed:

1. Pit

2. Houston

3. Baltimore

4. San Fran

5. NYJ

Offense yards:

1. New Orleans

2. New England

3. Green Bay

4. Philly

5. Detriot

On each of these lists 4 of the 5 teams made the playoffs. One of the teams that didn't make any of these lists is in the Superbowl.

You need to be able to score points and make stops. It's that simple.
