Blake Bortles: Threat Or No Threat?

He's the 3rd best QB of the 2014 draft class. If this was Bridgewater, I'd say yes. Bortles is kind of like a Kirk Cousins clone to me, and this is coming from someone who was high on Bortles at draft time in 2014.

How is he a cousins clone?

Agreed. His skillset rivals Luck, Rodgers, & Roethlisberger.

oh my god. This "the jags are gonna be sp00ky scary!" Narrative has gone on long enough.

Here's the thing, Bortles was god awful last year. With and without pressure the guy was bad, so it's not "his team's fault" at least exclusively.

In the offseason they added an injury prone receiving TE (already out for the first month), a rookie DE who tore his ACL and then was given a fully guaranteed deal (smart, Jags) and otherwise mostly just hoped for development.

Their coach that everyone loves simply because he's "high energy" has not shown in his two or three years the ability to win games. If he were a great coach you'd at least expect improvement by now, no?

And the GM hasn't shown anything either, except that he's made the team young. Youth doesn't mean anything if the players are no good, and/or aren't developed/coached well.

And then people worship Khan, when let's be honest, the only thing an owner needs to do is to pay and stay out of the way. Plenty of owners do that, including our very own Jim Irsay, and yet he is shown in a bad light by the media and consequently fans who are sheep and can't form their own opinions. Way too many people think he is a bad owner, but Khan is amazing because he built swimming pools.

When the Jags show me a reason to believe they've turned the corner I'll accept it, but I'm not just gonna sit back and comment on how scary the Jags are gonna be with no proof or reason to believe it whatsoever.

/rantoff Sorry man, this isn't so much just to you (although comparable to three of the best QBs in the league, really?) but to everyone who coddles the Jags for some reason. No hostility intended.

I think it's incredible that every year they get to pick in the top 3 spots of the draft and they still are a losing team. I mean it's incredible just how bad they've been and for so long. It's amazing really.

As for Bortles, he had the worst QBR since.....Gabbert. He has a long way to go.

In what way? Seriously?

He's as big as Andrew & Ben plus he can throw from the pocket & he's just as mobile as all 3. Is he on their level yet? Of course not. But if you don't see some similarities between Bortles & those 3 then IDK what to tell you. Ben even said it himself last year prior to their game in Jacksonville that Bortles is a younger version of him.

So he's the only rookie QB to have a God awful 1st year? Ever hear of the names Peyton Manning & Troy Aikman? I'm sorry that he couldn't lead the Jags to 11-5 like Andrew did us back in 2012 or 15-1 & an AFCC appearance like Ben did Pittsburgh.

We can agree the Jags are rebuilding, right? That means they're gonna have a young team & they're gonna go through growing pains(just like we did in 1998 & 2012 with our rookie QBs & other teams in general)

Skillset wise yes he's comparable to the guys I mentioned. Obviously right now he's nowhere near their level in terms of how they can routinely take over games & how they have their teams in the hunt for AFC/NFC supremacy annually.

All that was said was that I believe the guy is gonna be good. Is it a guarantee that he will? Of course not, which is why we'll have to see hoe things play out this season & beyond. It's not like I'm putting him 1st ballot HOF & how he'll bring Jacksonville a handful of SBs.

Happens every year at the start of the season. "Jacksonville is going to be good this year! Tennessee might be good! The Texans might be good!"

I think Colts fans know that they got it made with 6 easy wins a year from a horrible division they get to beat up on, that they are so desperate for a divisional rival.

Lucky for them, they'll benefit from these horrible teams for years to come. The one team that could have potentially threatened the Colts was the Texans, and they allowed their best offensive player to join the Colts.

No need to worry. Colts easily have this division locked for the next decade to come.

Justin Blackmon would've been a nice weapon for him..........................But it seems like he has a tough time not getting suspended indefinitely.

Bortles will be a threat.  How big of a threat?  No one knows, but I have a feeling it will take some time.  The Jags used to be great back in the days with Brunell, Smith, Taylor and McCardell.  I personally think he is the most interesting Jags QB prospect since Brunell however.

Peyton didn't have a bad year, he had the most TD passes by a rookie ever. He just threw picks. Bortles was the worst starting QB in the NFl. Big difference.

Best QB Jacksonville has seen in a while so I will say Semi-Threat himself. I think what will really make him a threat is if his surrounding cast steps up around him.

Based on?

yes he is a carson palmer level player. So someone who can take his team and compete. Anyone saying otherwise is scared on the thread

...

To the last sentence, haha

Maybe I'm not scared, but watched him play last year and saw he was the worst starting QB in the league.

Mostly my opinion watching him this preseason. He has looked more than solid this preseason. If it carries over to the regular season I believe he will be more of a threat than you are expecting. I hope you are right I hope he isn't a threat, but after watching him play this preseason I can't say I am just writing him off like you.

Yeah, 28 INTs to be exact. Again, 1 bad rookie season doesn't mean he's trash & you say he was the worst starting QB in football last year. If it continues then you can call him trash. Just like I see ppl on here gassing up Teddy like he's gonna take over the league. I myself believe he's gonna be really good don't get me wrong, but don't overreact to somebody having 1 good/bad rookie season. Give it a couple years before you call them good/bad.

:facepalm::rollseyes::rollseyes::rollseyes:

You know your division is pathetic when you are desperate enough for a rival to a team that is only going to win 3 games a year.

Yeah u say this all the time, and have the least amount of room to talk. At least the colts will actually play the winners of the other afc divisions making their schedule not as trash as the saints

Show me another player that went from the worst QB to even serviceable.

Troy Aikman. And we can both agree that he ended up being more than serviceable.

That's a fair point, you could argue he was the worst. I'd argue that a reason for that is most bad teams that year didn't play any one QB very much. Several teams had QBs combine for 30 or so interceptions. My point is that it is unlikely the guy rebounds and becomes good. We'll see I suppose.

    • Once again running out time to put out a complete list of both offense and defensive players and where I have them ranked among their peers.  Common theme from original pre-college Week 1 many of the top players are not even listed or have fallen sharply after around 4 weeks of playing.    2025 NFL Draft QBs Cam Ward - Miami (FL) - Ward’s 3x300 games in a row have earned him 3-straight 90.0+ passing grades.  Jaxson Dart (MISS)  Diego Pavia (Vandy) - after 4 weeks and is R2 in the SEC ahead of Ewers, Manning, Milroe, Nussmeier, and Carson Beck.  Thrown 6 TDs no INTs, recovered 3 teammate fumbles. Ben Wooldridge (Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns) Noah Fiftia (Arizona)  KJ Jefferson (UCF) Tyler Shough (Louisville)  Cam Miller (NDST) Kyle McCord (Syracuse)   2025 NFL Draft OL LG Michael McAninch (Air Force) - After 3 weeks has a 91.7 overall season grade with a 92.4 RB grade.  Proved he can hold up to Baylor didn’t allow any QB pressure. RT Tyler Needham (Rutgers) 6’4” 306-pounds – After 3 weeks been dominant.  On 48 PB snaps only given up 1 QB hurry. LT/RT/OG Grey Zabel (North Dakota State) RT Lucas Scott (Army) 6’3” 305-pounds – After 3 weeks has an 85.2 RB grade.  Figure the Army trains more hand-to-hand combat and could be decent in PB game as well. LG Joshua Gray (Oregon State) LG Donovan Jackson (OSU) - good to see Jackson play again and display his dominance in his return to action. OT Wyatt Milum (West Virginia) RG Luke Kandra (Cincinnati) RG Tate Ratledge (Georgia LT Kelvin Banks Jr (Texas) LG Dylan Fairchild (Georgia) LT Percy Lewis (Auburn) 6’7” 355-pounds – After 4 weeks on 85 snaps has a 78.5 grade as a backup. OC Jake Slaughter (Florida) LT Josh Simmons (OSU)   2025 NFL Draft RBs RB/WR-KR Brashard Smith (Southern Methodist) 5’10” 196 pounds - Smith already has 17 missed tackles, 3rd most among all college RBs. RB Ashton Jeanty (Boise St) 5’9” 215-pounds  RB Quinshon Judkins (OSU) 6’0 219-pounds RB Jonah Coleman (Washington) RB RJ Harvey (UCF) 5’9” 208-pounds RB Ja’Quinden Jackson (Arkansas) 6’2” 233-pounds – Issues fumbling RB Treveyon Henderson (OSU) 5’10” 208 pounds RB Devin Neal (Kansas) 5’11” 215 pounds RB Omarion Hampton (UNC) 6’0” 220 pounds RB Nicholas Singleton (PSU) 6’0” 227 pounds RB Jo’Quavious “Woody” Marks (USC) 5’10 208-pounds   2025 NFL Draft WRs WR-Z Tai Felton (Maryland) WR-X Tre Harris (Mississippi) WR-X Ricky White (UNLV) WR-SL Nick Nash (San Jose State) WR-X Tetairoa McMillian (Arizona) WR-Z Kobe Hudson (UCF) WR-SL Kaedin Robinson (App St) WR-SL Xavier Restrepo Miami (FL) WR-X Andrew Armstrong (Arkansas) WR-M/ST PR-KR Jaylin Noel (Iowa St) WR-X Jayden Higgins (Iowa St) WR-Y Emeka Egbuka (OSU)   2025 NFL Draft TE TE Harold Fannin Jr. (Bowling Green) - outproduced rest of TE class against top 25 ranked teams and single-handedly beat PSU.  Prior to week 4 R1 I total yards (204) and YAC with 131. TE Tyler Warren (PSU) TE Jalin Conyers (Texas Tech) - After 3 weeks has an 83.7 overall PFF grade and with Texas Tech excelling in run-blocking. TE Brant Kuithe (Utah) TE/WR Oronde Gadsden II (Syracuse) TE Colston Loveland (Michigan) TE Terrance Ferguson (Oregon) TE Jake Briningstool (Clemson)
    • Josh Allen Buffalo bills.  Super raw passer but big body with wheels.  It can happen just not easy or likely to happen
    • Thanks NFL for another typical primetime NFL LEast matchup. We learned both teams suck as bad as we thought they did
