Irsay says it's possible to have new deals for AC and Hilton by Labor Day

"We have a little time with trying to work on a few extensions," Irsay told ESPN.com. "There's no reason Anthony Castonzo and T.Y. Hilton can't get done. Look for us to keep core players and our top players. I don't think it'll be a distraction. I can't see why we can't get something done before Labor Day with T.Y. and Anthony."

40 days......On a Monday. I think they get it done

I hope you are foreshadowing the truth there Gavin. I'm not doubting you my man. I just wanna lock Castonzo up & sign TY at a cap friendly number without breaking the bank.

Yes, I know SW1 sucks at contract stuff, but that's where Superman, Dustin, Krunk, & NCF come in & tell fools like me what a good franchise deal really is.

Expected. Luck's will be the one we wait on, he's getting the biggest slice of the pie out of anyone we've drafted or signed in the Grigson era

Luck WILL get done though, there is a 0% chance he leaves. Hilton and AC could leave though, so I hope we get these done. I'm not crazy on paying him 14m per, but you don't just let a #1 receiver walk easily. If it takes 14m, I can get behind it but I hope we can lower it a bit to 12ish.

Given the quote you posted, Superman, it doesn't sound to me like he expects it done by Labour Day.  He thinks it's possible to get it done by then, but I don't think what he said means he expects it done by Labour Day

I can't see why we can't get something done before Labor Day with T.Y. and Anthony.

Verbatim. I know he might be playing the game, but I don't know how else to read that.

I don't think there is another way, I think he is being 100% clear and honest

I'm sorry,  but respectfully,  that's not the way I read that at all.

I think he's say it's possible.   I think he's saying he's optimistic.

But I don't think he's saying he "expects" deals to be done.    I think that's a different sentiment altogether.....

"I can't see why" to me means unless something unfathomable happens then there's a pretty good chance hey are signed by Labor Day. I would say "there is a chance" if I were just being optimistic. That's just my opinion though.

I didn't realize 21 was talking about the use of the word "expects." I guess that can make it seem stronger than it actually is. But the point was just that he thinks they can/should have something done by then.

I was referencing "expects" as it's used in the header of the thread....

But, on the front page of this website,  it only says new contracts are "possible".....

I think that's a safer way to put it.     I'm sorry,  I don't mean to turn this into a debate over semantics....    just trying to be cautious in the face of what I think might be too much optimism...

As always,   your mileage may vary........         :peek:             :hide:

You guys are right, the word "expects" is probably too strong, based on what Irsay actually said.

That said, I now expect new deals for AC and Hilton by the start of the season, based on Irsay's comments. That obviously shows in the thread title, which I'm going to change now...

Sorry, I should have clarified that better.  It was the use of the word "expects" that I was commenting on, as you and NCF said.

Finding the positive.....

I think it's very encouraging that Irsay is talking about a time frame that extends out to Labor Day.   Roughly 5 weeks from now.

So,  for now, at least,  there are no heavy pressure tactics being used by either side that I can see.    No one has set a hard deadline.    No one has said "Sign me by the start of training camp, or all talks will end!"     None of that type of stuff.

I think that's very positive for right now.      Of course,  that could change somewhere down the road,  but for now,   two thumbs up!

Week 1 officially starts the day after Labor Day. That makes sense as a break point. I don't know why people always talk about training camp, because the reality is that the cap/contract guys aren't doing much in the way of acquisitions, just the low level deal here and there, a trade here and there, etc. Not a lot of contract work. And the player isn't that involved in the negotiations anyways, it's the agent. Training camp is actually a perfect time to work on contracts.

They and their agents both know Irsay keeps and OVERPAYS his own. So why bother with ultimatums?

Castonzo is mediocre and TY is valuable, but the sum of the Offense with our GREAT QB makes him very expendable.  Is Irsay setting his franchise up again for Regular season success?

Another Hero QB to worship and high hopes, it does sells tickets.

Irsay was giddy when he announced we won the bidding war for Cherilus. I suspect his hands were all over the TRich deal too.

No matter how many times you claim Castonzo is mediocre, it won't be true.

I agree. The team gets to see the guy on the field and what he can deliver and what they have behind him if he gets away and they are motivated...the player sees guys go down and get cut or who is working hard to take his job and is again reminded of the fragility of the NFL and wants to get a long term deal done and reminds his agent. Nothing like some good ol football to get everyone in the mood to get back to work!

Why wouldn't you want to tie up 10% of the total salary cap in a small-ish receiver with just two years' of production. I mean, it's not like there are 52 other players.

You mean 3 out of 3 years of production? And even if I give you only 2 years of production, which I don't, it's still 2 out of 3 years, plus, a top statistical season for a rookie WR.

The size "argument" is so tiresome and off base.

Andre is second on the list at 7.5 mil cap hit, right behind Vontae Davis at 11.something mil.

The head scratcher is that we have a kicker at #14 on the list. I really like Patty Mac, but

should a kicker be making more than the next 38 players on the roster???

???

He makes $2.9m/year, which is about 2% of the cap, so it doesn't matter. Even if it did, he's the 11th highest paid punter, plus there are 11 kickers paid more than him, so he's #23 on the list of specialists. Slightly above average pay for one of the best punters in the league.

By the time final cuts are made, about 30 of those 38 players who are beneath him will be on rookie contracts. McAfee obviously isn't worth more than Hilton and Allen and the rest. But he's on a veteran contract, and they're on rookie contracts. Steven Hauschka and Jon Ryan make more than Russell Wilson. It's a function of the system.
