With Mini Camp coming to a close.. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the recent release of Evan Mathis from the Eagles. Colts social media has been blowing up after his announcement via twitter

Many think he is a strong solution to the O-line issues that have been floating around and the addition of Herremans earlier in the offseason makes this seem like a perfect fit. Anyone else think so?

For a one year deal (I don't care about the price), I'd say do it.

Gotta care about the price...

I'm not even sure he's the right fit for our blocking scheme. If the coaches felt good about putting him in our scheme, then we could make Mewhort the starter at RT, put Mathis at LG, and let Thornton, Herremans and Reitz battle it out for RG. Herremans and Reitz can play RT, also.

. I would actually just cut Cherilus now to help clear up a little cap, he's done if you ask me.

Unfortunately, Cherilus cost us $ 6,900,000.00 if he stays.  But if we cut him, it will cost the Colts an additional 1,800,000.00  ( $8.7 million total ) to remove him from the roster in dead cap money. Gosder will  be here on the roster this upcoming season, it would seem.

The reports are that Louis Lance is the favorite to win the LG spot after Mewhort moved to RT so if we make a move to take him the line would be : Castonzo, Mathis, Holmes/Harrison, Lance, Mewhort, and the depth well is pretty deep. Thorton, Herremans, Reitz, Gosder, Holmes, Thomas(he's still a colt), the 2 T (i don't remember right now their names), and the Boy from CFL. Those are 14 lineman i don't think we make a move for him because we have too many body right now.

We're post June 1 (actually May 12 now). Cherilus saves $2.9m this season, and $4m next season, if we release him.

We'll keep 9-10 OL, barring injuries. In a vacuum, none of our guards are as good as Mathis. Scheme fit is a consideration, but let's assume he fits. He'd be our best guard. I'm fine with trimming the tree in order to make room for him on our final roster. Louis can go, Heenan isn't going to make it, the young tackles probably won't make it, and Thomas and Cherilus can go on the basis of injury history/projections anyways. Releasing those two immediately makes up for the cost of signing Mathis, assuming we get him on a reasonable deal. Under these parameters, Mathis would make our line better.

To me, the cost would have to be right, and the staff would (obviously) feel like he's a good fit. If those two things line up, it's an easy yes for me.

    • And yet, PFF didn't grade him all that high last year.  My response to this is that the scheme is designed for the MLB and the SS to make most of the tackles.  And they do. But last year, Franklin allowed a 77% completion rate with 10.2 yards per completion, and 7.9 yards per target.  In summary, he makes a lot of tackles by scheme, but he also allows a lot of completions. I don't think of him a Great.  Or even Good.  He's Fair.   https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/F/FranZa00.htm
    • Probably still won’t shut people up lol. But that is interesting  We are 3 games in after a shoulder surgery. What are you talking about.
    • Every bottom feeder team has a good player or two. Are the colts a bottom feeder? At times they play like it.    the “forum GMs” as you call them, don’t dislike when a player does well. They just hate when the team sucks. There’s nothing wrong with that. And no one here says some of the Colts players aren’t good players.    the Colts stunk it up pretty bad in the first two weeks, lost game one again a stat that we have held for over a decade. In must win games, the colts perform exceptionally awful with a mind boggling level of consistency under this regime.    the good players that the Colts have tend to also not show up in those games and make any game changing plays.    ok so Franklin can tackle. So what? Yeah the forum GMs are shaking with rage because of that!
    • The huge difference is that you could see the progress in peytons game and how he always learned and keept going. and in year two, he really took off and started to show why we picked him.   With AR, things just getting worse, game after game... I wouldn't mind if we traded him for some picks next season.
    • AR is a huge BUST   Hope we draft Arch Manning in to or three years time and move on from this trainwreck of a QB we currently have
