Did Roger Goodell direct Winston to stay home on Draft Day?

Many have wondered why a likely top draft pick will not be present when his name is announced on Draft Day. Could it be that Goodell asked Winston to stay away?

Quote:

"...reports have surfaced that Goodell, during a Park Ave. sitdown with Winston, may have suggested the quarterback stay out of Cook County on draft day and take the lucky phone call in sweet home Alabama.

The theory is Goodell, the NFL’s Bungler In Chief, doesn’t need his picture taken first hugging, then handing a Bucs jersey to a cat who had rape accusations leveled against him, lifted some crab legs from a Piggly Wiggly, and cussed up a storm in the Florida State cafeteria. Apparently, Goodell is still more concerned about his own image than Winston’s. The commish probably cringes when he looks at those pictures of him and Johnny Rehab at last year’s draft."

I'm going to guess if this has any merit to it, that Goodell doesn't want Winston to show up because Winston threatened to do or not to do something on draft day that would embarrass Goodell and the NFL. He probably would refuse to shake the Commish's hand or he would say something incredibly stupid. Winston probably already told the commish what he had planned and they got into a disagreement during their private meeting.

I'm just speculating at this point, but it's probably somewhat close to the truth if it's indeed the case that Goodell doesn't want him to show up. With his immaturity issues, I wouldn't put it past Winston.

This should throw red flags to teams across the NFL.

When was the last time a #1 overall pick decided to stay home?

MTE! I don't believe this was Winston’s decision. He strikes me as someone who enjoys the attention and adulation from fans. He would not choose to stay away. JMO.

How did this turn into TRich bashing?  Just out of curiosity, why?

I hate Liza Minnelli.

There, now you can try to figure out why this turned into a Liza Minnelli bashing thread. Enjoy your Sunday figuring that one out.

Total fantasy..makes no sense

Goddell doenst want the embarrassment of the No,1 pick in the draft NOT being at the draft after they have been for decades..

That would highlight the 'riskiness;' of Winston's behavior..

My guess would be that Winston wanted to talk to Goddell, in part, to tell him face to face that he wouldn't be coming to the draft.

The logical theory is that Winston told Goddell he doesn't want to be at the draft because Winston doesn't want to be at the draft.

I may be in the minority here.....but I think its a good sign about Winston and his future.

that he wanted to speak with Goddell privately...maybe separate rumor from fact and vow to stay on the right side of the law.

I've heard he's a bit of a charmer and a charismatic guy...maybe he's a con man..I don't know

but the young man does seem to realize he may need friends in high places in the years to come.

You think Winston THREATENED Goodell with something?

I think you're horribly over-thinking this.

How about the very real possibility that Goodell asked Winston not to show up because of the likelihood that Winston might get booed!?!     Goodell doesn't want the first pick in the draft to be greeted by a chorus of boos,  because THAT would be the biggest story of the draft.

There is a very real possibility he would be booed...I think it might be that Winston wants to be different..

..as a Florida star...going to a Florida team...he may want to show some kind of loyalty to where he's from and where he;s going.

That's a possibility as well, but I've seen people get booed. Andrew Luck got booed because so many people wanted to see RGIII get drafted at the time that they booed Luck. It's not the same thing obviously, but my point is that they can pretend booing never happened at the draft. If Winston says something derogatory at the draft, it will be live, and a direct reflection on the NFL and Roger Goodell. I don't know as I said, but this is something that wouldn't go away, booing can be ignored by the fans.

At the combine, people spoke glowingly of him. He gave several interviews. Many said he came across as very bright. There were no reports that he did anything to embarrass himself or the NFL. I would think he would be on his best behavior at the draft. If he is going to misbehave, it will happen, whether at the draft or while playing for an NFL team.

It is good to read the different viewpoints of the fans here.

So, if he's showing loyalty to his new team, from his home state,  wouldn't he want to be at the draft?

He's not going to be in Tampa.    To the best of my knowledge, he's going to be with his family at their home.

Not sure I follow......

Because I felt like it. No other reason. I have no axe to grind with him, but he was a very poor acquisition. And he fed the line I was thinking about. Why does it worry you so? Just curious....

No worries but it's old news at this point. I guess  3,000 comments wasn't enough.

Well..he might feel that being in Florida..wherever he is he'll be on TV

..would should some kind of thanks to the folks who stood by him (FSU) and those who showed faith (Tampa Bay) in him

...the only reason to be in Chicago would be to shake Goddell's hand for a photo opportunity and he may simply want to be different..

...he's certainly been a different kind of guy so far

From Mike Florio:

"The thinking is that it won’t be ideal for Goodell’s still-fragile image to be seen hugging and then presenting a jersey to the controversial Winston, who has been accused of rape, has admitted to stealing crab legs, and has yelled an obscene phrase on a table in the Florida State student union."

Which is 100% his opinion.  He also said that the Eagles should sign Bradford to a new deal with a no-trade clause so the media wouldn't speculate on Mariota anymore.  I guess what I'm trying to say is, I often disagree with his opinions.

Players get booed all the time on the field of play.

Not in public relations settings which is what the draft is.

The NFL controls the message and they don't want the message being that the #1 pick in the draft is a bad guy and not popular.

A chorus of boos would say that.

But,  you may be right.    I just think my scenario is far more plausible than one floated by another poster about Winston threatening Goodell.     That was a non-starter for me.

Not the first overall pick.

The last one that went really weird was Eli Manning.

The NFL doesn't like stuff like that.

Hey, in the grand scheme of things, I'm guessing.    I just thought it was interesting that Winston's decision came so shortly after meeting with Goodell.

It's entirely possible that those two events are coincidental...

No doubt the decision was made when they met.  I don't think that's a question.  Who initiated it is.

Not sure if this will matter, but this year's draft is in Chicago, not Radio City Music Hall. It's possible that the rowdy element from Jets/Giants fans won't be an issue this year. But there's no telling.

    • Man I feel real strong about Brian Thomas jr. I think it's on and cracking if we get him. His game is just consistent and he is such a hard cover. I like him being paired with Pittman. I really do!
    • This is probably the most exciting nonplaying event of the year and it’s tomorrow. I just hope that Balllard  and the scouting department I’ve done their job thoroughly
    • @2006Coltsbestever @NFLfan   Kirk has been treated much better and with much more respect than Wentz was treated in Indy. And was showed with Love and truckloads of money in Minnesota, and was defended constantly with much more ferocity by Vikings fans than people defending Ballard in Grievances thread.    it'd be crazy to think of injustice against Kirk for a few minority who criticize his play.    We're Going back and forth on Kirk debate which will go on for eternity, but I struck Gold when I saw recently @Superman explaining how he felt watching Wentz playing with other teams before he got to Indy and how it felt watching him play for Colts when you're emotionally invested with the franchise.    There's no other way to perfectly describe Kirk Cousins' career and his QB play.   For every fan around the NFL, especially for fantasy football fans, Kirk will be a hero and am above average QB. But, when you're emotionally invested in your favourite franchise and Kirk plays QB for your team, you would come close to understanding how excruciatingly frustrating his play and smartness and game awareness are (or shortage of them are), that all contributes to team missing playoffs many years and even when they qualify, no one sees Kirk as a threat in playoffs. Ever. Your team would be paying Elite QB Money for that, and you'd be constantly in debate with criticizers Vs defenders. Until he plays for your team, you won't realize that, and I totally understand.    Anyway, happy to pass on that frustration over to Falcons fans, they'd know soon. First of all, Kirk takes at least a season or two to trust his OL, even if you put an elite line and weapons around him, and it's all in his head. I'm going to sit back and read Falcons forums for Fun in 2024 Season! Good Times!
    • I have no idea how it will all shake out, but I have my popcorn ready.
    • There are no owners in the NFL that are perfect people. Some owner's demons are more public, some not so much, but they all have them. There's much more to the free agency issue and the Colts than most are aware of. There are a lot of intangibles most will never consider. That said, there is more to almost every aspect of any organization that most will ever be aware of. Those are often the things that matter most.
