Potential Hof Players

IndyTrav

Recommended Posts

I was in a debate in another thread, and I just wanted to get everyones opinion on players that have HoF potential. Lets try to keep Colts out of this, and base it on the remainder of the NFL. They can be retired, soon to retire, or still playing, as long as they are not currently in the HoF.

I'll start off with some defensive players, and I'd like to see who others think would fit as well. Lets try to keep the truly young guys off the list.

Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Brian Urlacher?, Zach Thomas, Jason Taylor, Troy P.?, Strahan, Charles Woodson, Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, James Harrison?, Jared Allen?, Julius Peppers?, Kevin Greene? Simeon Rice? Joey Porter?, Demarcus Ware? Brian Dawkins?

Some of these guys I think merit consideration, but only a few will make it. Lewis/Strahan/Taylor/Woodson/Sapp are locks, but Im not entirely sure not another person makes it.

Brian Waters. Tarik Glen, Larry Allen, Jonathan Ogden, and Steve Hutchenson are all locks IMO. Chad Cliffton, Nick Mangold, Joe Thomas, and Joe Staley all have HOF potention IMO but they might need to win the big one (Cliff not included) to get some serious consideration.

As for the players you listed, I'd be stunned if at least 90% didn't make the HOF.

Ronde Barber is a sure-shot HOFer. 15th season in the leage, SB champion, and one of the all-time best tackling dbs.

Antonio Gates will make the HOF IMO. He has been a model of consistency his entire career, and provided injuries don't set him back, I see him playing at least another 3-4 years at a high level.

Just bold predictions. Von Miller is already looking like one of the best OLBs in the NFL and Aldon Smith is just a few sacks away from breaking the 49ers season record. So they're off to a fantastic start.

Tarik Glenn? Sure, he can get in. All he needs is a ticket.

I noticed a couple of people mentioned Vinatieri... tough call on that one. Statistically speaking, his career has been very, very good, but you could certainly make the argument that there have been more accurate and higher scoring kickers who are not in the HOF. His legacy is based on performing in the clutch, which is an obvious non-measurable. On top of that, there's one pure kicker in the HOF. It's not a position that gets a lot of consideration.

Of course, as a Patriots fan, I'd like to see him get in... I just don't know if he will or not.

In that case, you should include Gronkowski. He has the potential to be, by far, the best TE of all time.

Yeah you're right. I do think both Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham have potential to become HoF TEs. My list was just off the top of my head, there are lots of guys who have potential but only a few are locks.

Why is Tarik Glen such a long shot at the HOF? He was a first round pick out of California in 97', and he and Marvin Harrison were the first two pieces essentially, in rebuilding this franchise back into playoff team from the ground up. He was a physical phemom, great in man and zone blocking schemes, and was an integral part of Mannings' and James' HOF numbers.

He played at starting tackle at a very high level for 10 seasons straight, and only missed 6 games his whole career, during an injury stretch in 2003. He was a multiple pro bowler, and certainly the best offensive linemen we've had during the Manning era. On top of that, he won the big one in 2006 and retired on top of the world.

You don't think this holds any merit?

He was a very solid player for sure but no I do not think he is Hall of Fame worthy.

He played in 3 Pro Bowls but was always an alternate who played due to the absence of other players, Willie Roaf twice and Matt Light once.

There are 17 modern era offensive tackles in the Hall of Fame

This is an average of a little more than 3 per decade.

Is Tarik Glenn the 3rd best tackle of the last decade?

Some of the names in this thread are just astonishing.

i dont think a lot people understand how exclusive the football HoF really is. they do it right. you dont get in by having a "really good" career or a "solid" career over a long time. you get in by being among the best players at your position for a long time. you pretty much have to be the best of that generation.

I'm having a little trouble just getting past your first line. Michael Vick (aside from about 10 minutes last year) has never been one of the top 12 QBs in the league at a given moment, much less one of the best of his generation. The two DBs have been pro-ball quality on occasion but not "greats", McCoy is a good young RB, but come on. There are a LOT of equally good young RBs in the game at any given time.

i agree that the hof is hard to get into. still, 50-65 players will probably make it into the hof over a decade. That is a lot of names. if you are the fifth best at your position you will make it into the hof most likely, not including kickers.
