What are your thoughts on WR depth?

Recommended Posts

We have so talent right now but picking up free agents will continue to delay the growth of moncrief, duron carter and make whalen obsolete...again. But on the other hand, the receivers and tight ends get man handled by the pats and leaves ty no room to make a threat as he is tightly watched.

I really like cecil shorts, brandon marshall, and brian hartline. To see them with so much talent and lack of a good qb, it makes you think what they would be like behind luck.

Who is your preferences? To be honest:

1. Ty

2. Hartline

3. Brandon marshall

4. Andre johnson/duron carter (while he learns)/moncrief

Mixing them somehow.

No to hartline
No to marshall
Undecided on johnson(would only take him on a cheap one yr deal which i doubt he will want that)

Depending on how FA goes if we upgrade the trenches maybe idk some guys named Wisnewski, O.Franklin, Knighton. Then we can draft weapons to help out against elite teams

1.TY
2.Green-Beckham (if we sign the previously mentioned players and hes there at #29..IF)
3.Moncrief
4.Carter
With out two TEs that would really be something, i think we sign a veteran

It's the LEAST of my concerns by far.

I'd rather have a no-name WR corps if it means having a better O-Line and defense. That is NE and Seattle's model; you don't put too much money into players that a QB can make better (WR, TE).

Then again there are times when those big name WRs are a nice luxury.

They need some. I wouldn't be shocked if they make a move for Johnson and bring Reggie back for one last year. That would be a mix of younger guys and vets and possion guys and starters.

I doubt the Colts go after him but I have always like Maclin from the Eagles that is going to be a free agent.

I could see reggie too but he looked really injured past season. His durability may be a worry. Andre would just be his perfect compliment and they can take turns.

Steve Johnson, if and when he is released.

That's the guy I would look at too.would step right in be the #2 really take.a ton of pressure of TY and Moncrief

As of now we have no WR depth people are biting hard or Carter not sure why.

He did pretty good in the CFL he ended up there because he lacked the strength to beat man cover among other things with the big boys

My thoughts on our WR depth are.... deep.

As it stands it's a bit think in that we only really TY as a proven receiver and Moncrief as a promising prospect, it's no secret we are in the market for a solid mid tier receiver in FA. If Reggie can come back to and can overcome last season's difficulties than we should be solid if not spectacular at WR. I can see us taking a flier late in the draft given how deep it is at WR again this year.

yes without question reggie was hurt by injury but If you bring him back and add another vet you are asking him to be third or fourth option and you have Carter if something happens.

Need a WR that can get meaningful YAC by not just running in a straight line.  TY, Moncrief, and Carter aren't that guy.  Need a vet WR and a scat/shifty WR.

IOW, the depth is pretty poor.  No diversity.

Obviously my first choice is Brandon Marshall. He's a beast, still in his prime. I've been wanting that big 6'4, jump ball beast for years. If he isn't released though, give me Johnson. He's still got another good year or two. Especially if he had Luck throwing to him.

We have decent depth at WR.  We still have Griff, who can move the chains- vet.  TY take top off Defense- vet.  Moncrief needs work on route running and can short, intermediate, and over the top from what I saw last season.  I believe Carter played in CFL at least season.  Plus Reggie may be resigned.

In the draft, we could pick-up a late round WR to be developed.

IMO, we don't needed a FA WR.

Brandon Marshall's size is the key. He, not only can produce, but can teach Duron Carter how to use his size. Second, why is no one mentioning Jeremy Maclin? He is one of the most reliable receivers in the game. He'd be great in a Colts uniform. Andre Johnson is the Texans version of Reggie. If we make a move like this if rather keep Reggie.

I think you and I typically see eye to eye on here. You must be a pretty smart dude. :)

We need a vet who can be a #2 or #3.  I like AJ and Marshall but only at lower contracts.  Not their current pay.

Of the FA's I really like Eddie Royal who could be good a #3 option.

A lot depends on if we think Moncrief is ready to start.

Why do you guys constantly sell Moncrief short? This is exactly what people did with Hilton at first claiming that he wasn't a true number 1 receiver. Donte is very solidly our number 2. Let Carter and another FA compete for the number 3, and then bring in Whalen and another WR for depth. In total, 5 WR's on the roster, maybe 6 depending on who leaves.

I don't get the constant discontent with the Colts WR core. 2012 it was, we need more weapons, Hilton isn't a number 1. Year 2 it was, our offense was terrible without Reggie, we need more help at WR (when we had Da'Rick, Whalen, and Brazil). Year 3 we get Moncrief and people begging he gets more snaps, then he gets them and shows promise and it's the same story. I get Nicks and Reggie might not be back but it's no reason to hit the panic button. We don't need more than 2 top tier receivers, and a couple of guys for depth. Bringing in a big name FA or high draft pick won't solve anything.

I'm liking the thought of Andre Johnson as a Colt more and more.

He would command respect from the secondary, which would take pressure off other receivers, and with his back shoulder catchability, he's basically always open.

Plus, if I'm AJ wouldn't I rather catch passes from Andrew Luck, than whoever is the Texans QB next week?

We need to bring someone in so that Moncreif and Carter can continue to develop since we haven't quite realized their ceilings yet, and who knows what Reggie decides.

that has to be a "IF"  lol. because he will not fall out of the first round. and if he does he wont fall past the niners. but i think the Giants take him to pair him up with OBJ.

I'm not sure that's either team's motto per se. NE has Gronkowski and previously had Hernández and Welker and in the past had Randy Moss. Seattle has spent big money on Harvin in addition to picking players like Paul Richardson in the second round. The key is creating a balance and if players want more than you're comfortable with, then let them walk and replace them.

Moncrief showed flashes, definitely not enough to go into the season with him as our #2.  He needs to be more aggeressive and physical in addition to showing he is more than a flash before I am ready to write him in as the #2.

Sounds more like ODB, Evans, Watkins, and Benjamin have warped expectations of Moncrief. Seriously what else was he supposed to do besides "flash"? He had limited snaps, and...oh yeah, he's a ROOKIE WR. You guys are setting the bar ridiculously high for the guy.

And the only reason people keep saying he needs to be more physical is because of this obsession with the Dez Bryant/Megatron receivers who make highlight reel catches in traffic. Every time someone is listed as 6'3" people wanna say they should be a "physical" receiver, which is bad stereotyping.

444 yards and 3 TD's on a team with Hakeem Nicks, Reggie Wayne, Hilton, Fleener, and Dwayne Allen. Not to mention he only had a handful of snaps and started 2 games. All things considered, that's pretty solid for a rookie WR.

I am not saying I didn't like what I seen from him, I am a fan of Moncrief and hope he becomes a dominant WR even our #1. I agree he looked good for a rookie; but he did not look good enough to just assume he is going to be able to step in and be the #2 this season.

Its not about highlight reels, and it's not just Dez and Megatron; most of the good bigger WRs are physical and aggressive ... it's not a stereotype it is a valid expectation for a WR Mocrief's size. A WR who is 6'2" 220+ should be a physical presence, he should go up strong after balls, and bully smaller defenders ... right now Moncrief is often the one getting pushed around and he doesn't attack the ball in the air, he plays small a lot of times, and wants to let the ball come to him instead of going up and taking it.  If he can be coached up in this area he will be a dominant WR, if not his ceiling is limited.
