So do you like this signing ? It's another old dude but he did give V Davis fits...

I like all the signings.

It's hard to complain about the cost of AJ when he had 7 other teams waiting in line, and the Chargers reportedly offered him more money.

And it's hard to complain about the cost of Trent Cole when he had multiple visits and reportedly had other offers as well.

Frank Gore is $4m/year, I'll never complain about that kind of deal.

He actually was. AJ had 141 targets, Hopkins had 120.

Hopkins was more productive and way more efficient. AJ still got more looks.

Interesting. He must have gotten more looks from Keenum/Mallett because Fitz was always looking Hopkins' way. Must have carried over from the training camp thing.

Sure, maybe. I just don't see Johnson in the same league as Reggie as a receiver. Reggie is one of the greatest of all time. Andre has been great but not Reggie-great. lol.

Statistically, he's been better than Reggie. And with worse QBing.

Reggie: 14 years, 211 games, 1,070 catches, 14,345 yards, 82 TDs (per year: 76 catches, 1,024 yards, 5.9 TDs)

Andre: 12 years, 169 games, 1,012 catches, 13,597 yards, 67 TDs (per year: 84 catches, 1,133 yards, 5.3 TDs)

Even comparing their statistical peaks, Reggie has one 1,500 yard / 10 TD season; Andre has two 1,500 yard / 8+ TD seasons.

Reggie is one of my favorite receivers of all time. A technician, great hands, Mr. Reliable. Special place in my heart. But Andre has been a mega-producer for a long time, most of it as the sole receiving weapon on the roster (Marvin Harrison/Dallas Clark/Pierre Garcon vs Andrew Walter/Owen Daniels/?).

I'm not expecting 100 catches and 1,300 yards. But he's not some over the hill afterthought that's hanging on trying to extend his career. He's younger than Jerry Rice in Oakland. Way younger.

? he had 900 yards with terrible qb play last year

The Colts didn't sign Frank Gore to sling the ball 67 times a game this season. I'm not sure why you keep harking on the "terrible QB play" as if that has anything to do with Andre's role with the Colts.

he will be catching passes with a much better qb than he has ever had. He will have a big year

It speaks to his ability. He could probably get 900 yards on 75% of the targets in Indy. Reggie had 800 yards on 115 targets, 6.9 yards/target.

My only point is I don't think he produces for you the way Reggie did in 2012. You were the one that made the comparison to the Texans getting a 2012 Reggie. I do not believe that is what the Colts are getting in this deal but he could surprise given he has Luck slinging it to him.

Then this is a bad deal if he doesn't produce close to Reggie in 2012.

That comparison had nothing to do with impact. It was about emotion.

I said already, I don't expect 2012 Reggie production, but I think it's foolhardy to write it off. Andre Johnson is a great receiver. No reason he shouldn't be mentioned in the same class as Reggie Wayne.

I could see that. But I wonder if Hamilton intends on him being the number one or number two guy, and if he will temper Andre along with his plays like he did with Bradshaw. In any case, the Colts do have quite a few receiving options to go to.

I really don't get the signing at all though. You didn't need an outside guy. You need help with your lines. Your offense was plenty good last year with Luck passing but no run game as no line and the Dline was also poor.

    • It depends on how good AR will be, if he is good we can win 11 with the help of another great player, we won 9 with Minshew, should have been 10.
    • Gotta have a trade partner.Big ? Is would Arizona trade back that far knowing they’re gonna miss out on one of those top 3 Wr’s.I would also call New England and Los Angeles too.I don’t see MHJ getting past the 4th pick unless a Minnesota or Denver trades up for one of those top QB’s.I also don’t see the Giants if they stay put at 6 not taking Nabors I think that’s who they got they’re eyes on with that pick.
    • I think this probably isn't an objective viewpoint. I think you want fireworks, and you're an eternal optimist. Nothing wrong with that, but I think a more practical viewpoint is to acknowledge that taking huge chances isn't exactly a recipe for success. (You're going to point to examples that worked out; I'm going to counter with twice as many that failed.)   The bolded especially. First, it seems like you chose 11 games because you feel like that's the target to keep up with the Texans. Second, I don't think the Colts are one player away from keeping up with the top tier of the AFC. I think a lot has to go right for the Colts to be in the mix with the Chiefs, etc. I said at the beginning of the offseason, I think we're still one draft class away from being in those discussions.   But if you can talk yourself into one guy being the answer, just one playmaker holds the key for the Colts to be in contention, then yeah, identify your favorite prospect and bang the table for the Colts to do whatever they have to to get that player. That would be awesome for us. But I think the reason Ballard doesn't do that is because it's flawed team building (historically speaking), not because he's afraid.. You can promise steak dinners based on your hunches, but that's not exactly how I want the GM to make decisions.
    • Even in 2021 draft Chase was selected 5th by the Bengals, best move they have ever made. That gave Burrow gigantic help. They did the right thing and got Burrow what he needed.
