Moneyball contracts

Recommended Posts

I like the moneyball method of approaching free agency. Sometimes it pays to break the bank on a guy, but more often than not, that method fails. Every year there are a number of guys who get small contracts, and vastly outperform said contracts.

Who do ya'll think will get below market value contracts, and prove to be quality starters or competent depth players?

Sean Weatherspoon LB - I'd really like to see how he'd look in our system. He was a high draft choice who had a couple of really good years with the Falcons. In 2013 he missed a bunch of games and this last year he missed the entire year with a ruptured Achilles. He doesn't have much negotiation leverage, but he may feel the Falcons low ball him or just want a change of scenery. Either way, he's going to be cheap, and if healthy he would be far better than D'Qwell Jackson.

Arthur Moats EDGE - He posted a very respectable PFF grade, and 4 sacks in very limited action for the Steelers. He was a guy that I wanted last year and Pittsburgh got him for $635,000. I can't fathom how he would be any less effective than Andy Studebaker.

Kenrick Ellis NT - Big fatty with a lot of potential. Stuck behind Damon Harrison is something that 90% of the Nose Tackles in the league would face if he were on the roster.

Karl Klug DT - I've mentioned him before, and as an interior pass rush specialist I have no doubt he would be an excellent addition.

Alan Ball CB - Another guy coming off an injury, but in the five games he played last year he gave up a 64.5 QB rating. Plus he's 6'2. He'll definitely be cheap, and I feel he could push Toler for the spot opposite Davis.

Chris Cook CB - I'm not sure how good he is, but he's a former 2nd round pick, and he also is a physical 6'2 corner. I'm sure there's a decent amount of talent, but I know he's got some significant character red flags. Wouldn't hurt to bring him in at a vet minimum deal.

Jermey Parnell OT - When Doug Free was hurt, the Cowboys put Parnell in at Right Tackle and he outperformed a very respectable Free. At the very least he would provide excellent depth, but I'd look for the guy to possibly start.

Mark Ingram RB - We can replace our current Alabama bust with the guy he replaced. Ingram has not exactly lived up to his first round status, but as a platoon back he is a respectable RB.

No, I'm not into that personally. The only guy I would want us to sign from that list is Parnell to replace Cherilus. The other guys except Weatherspoon and Ingram are backups and nothing more. The Guys we could sign cheep and hope they outperform the contract are guys who are coming off injuries and such. Like the Dolphins and Grimes two years ago. Brian Orakpo comes to mind. Although some think he'll still get a big contract. I disagree though. I believe he'll have to settle for a 1 year deal.

i think joseph barksdale could be a good option at OT on a cheaper 2-3 year deal rotoworld says he's gonna test the open the market solid above average starter at worst adds quality depth to the O-Line http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/6508/joseph-barksdale

Yeah, I'd love Barksdale, but I do think he'll get a pretty decent amount of money. He was pretty good last year.

I think a guy who fits this mold is Ron Parker from the Kansas City Chiefs. He bounced around between the Seahawks, Panthers and Raiders before landing in Kansas City a couple of years ago. In Kansas City he came into his own. He started 15 of the 16 games for the Chiefs last year and made huge contributions in the wake of Eric Berry's situation. He has played both CB and S in the NFL. He has top notch speed for a Safety and can make plays in the run game, as he had 84 tackles last season. I doubt he is expensive and he seems like a Grigson guy.

He's super athletic, just not very good. Decent as depth and a spot starter, but not someone I'd want us to sign to be a big time contributor.
