Colts Offseason/ Mock 2015 1.0

Alright Gents! After lurking around these boards for the last few years, I have finally decided to roll up my sleeves and start contributing. That being said, I present my first ever offseason/draft mock!!! With the Combine not even started up yet, these projections will wildly change, but I think this is a good starting point. I look for forward to your feedback on this (keep in mind I have never done this before). All of these cap numbers are figured using the overthecap.com software, as well as a few salary projections from other mock drafts, both on and off our boards.

In the event Hasselbeck Retires - Matt Moore - 1 yr - 2M

Remaining Cap                 11.6M

Draft

1-Paul Dawson – ILB – With half of our ILBs having run ins with the law in recent months, it wouldn’t hurt to bring in some new blood. Dawson brings a playmaking aspect to our middle that we haven’t had in awhile. Cap 1.32M

2- Cody Prewitt – FS- I think he may be gone by now, but if by some chance he is, this is the pick we need to make. He would give our back end a playmaker. Cap .65M

3- Mike Davis – RB – He is a hard-nosed runner who would give our O line a tough RB to rally around. Makes quick cuts, doesn’t dance around and fights for extra yards. Also looks decent in the pass game, although he could use some practice pass blocking (but what college RB doesn’t need that).  Cap .6M

4- Henry Anderson – DT/DE – Can play multiple positions along the line. He has surprising quickness for a player of his size. He is our replacement for Redding in the D line rotation. Might not be around by this point. (Second Choice – Corey Crawford –DE) Cap .55M

5-Deontay Greenberry – WR – Tall Physical WR that will fight for the ball. Could use some work with route running and beating press coverage. Could turn into a gem.  Cap .48M

6- Cam Thomas – CB – Physical Corner. Great in the run game. Not a polished prospect, but learning from our solid group of CBs he could be a solid contributor down the road. Cap .46M

6- Blake Sims – QB – We need to get a backup for Luck eventually (especially if Hasselbeck does not come back). Sims is a raw talent, but given the right coaching he could be a solid player to have behind Luck. Cap .46M

7- Brett Boyko – OT – A last round flyer. Lacks the skills to be an elite talent, but hasn’t had a ton of experience in American Football (he was a Canadian DE). Needs some coaching and some confidence but the guy could be a depth player for us.  Mostly just want the Colts to take a chance on him because he is from my hometown of Saskatoon, SK, Canada. Cap .45M

Cap After Draft Picks – 6.7M

Not a big splash in FA for us this year if we go this route, but between the few key players we get along with our draft picks I think this will set us up with some solid pieces on both sides of the ball, as well as good rotational/backup players in case we get with that wretched injury bug we can’t seem to shake.

Let me know what you all think!! Can’t wait to hear your feedback!!

And with all the legal trouble our LBs are getting in, I'd rather have one with a spotless character. Dawson comes with some baggage although it's more attitude than criminal. Still rather have Kendriks.

This doesn't seem to be the place where players with character concerns can come in and flourish.

Yeah Im not a fan of drafting a QB at all

The way I see it we can follow two paths in regards to our backup qb situation.

The first is our usual plan, which leaves us one injury away from 2-14, or we can be proactive and take a chance on a high upside player late in the draft that could be a decent backup that may even be able to get us a return via a trade down the road. The Patriots have got away with it with both Cassel and Mallett, essentially renting them as backups and then trading them away. I am not saying I think we can get a 2ND round pick for Sims down the road, but we may be able to get a 6th or 7th rounder, essentially getting our initial investment back.

In this scenario we need to resign toler or sign a good fa. Also this leaves us with the same o line we had last year outside a 7th round tackle. My dream off season for our o line would be to pick up 2 top guards and move mewhort to rt and cut cherilus.

I have faith in who we have on the line, at least enough to give them one more season to try and progress. We have Thornton and John both coming back from injury, as well signing heenan from the CFL, who with a little coaching could be a starter for us. I wouldn't mind adding in a bit more competition if we can swing it though. Could be a few udfas that look promising. Although all of this assumes cherilus comes back 100%. If he has any sort of set back then we would need to rethink priorities.

I would pass on Greenberry. He reminds me of Steven Hill, formerly of the Jets. Wide receiver with tantalizing size but poor hands and route running.

While I agree with that assessment, I feel if we don't have to throw him in the fire like they did to hill he could take the time to work on that. Especially with Reggie around to show him the ropes if he comes back.

All this debate is for nil. One thing we have learned from Grigson is he beats to his own drum. With every player he may sign before the draft changes every pick like the two CFL players just signed. I understand it's the off season and there is not a lot to be discussed but all this effort is just that. With every mock draft I have looked at they are all different. I would be willing to bet that Grigson will go totally different than what most feel he should.

Absolutely It will be different. we haven't even hit the combine yet, which will drastically change rankings. This is simply a starting point for me to build on as time goes.

Mostly we are just bored with the offseason and looking for reasons to argue with one another :P

    • Welcome once again to Dr. T’s annual, official, Colts Draft Contest for 2024! Believe it or not, this is the 25th year we are doing this since the first contest was the Edgerrin James draft of 1999! With only seven choices this year, we needed to be creative again. So, contestants will be asked to select an A, B, and C choice for ALL rounds. Correctly choosing choice A merits 5 points, while correctly choosing choice B or C instead will merit 4 and 3 points respectively. If one of your "A" selections is chosen, but in a different round than you predicted, you get 2 points, if one of your "B" selections is chosen in a different round than you predicted, you get 1 point, and if one of your "C" selections is chosen in a different round than you predicted, you get 0.5 points. In addition, we will have a bonus question again this year and give everyone the opportunity to predict if the Colts will trade their #15 pick! The choices will be: trade up, trade back, stay put or you can also abstain from guessing. Like last year, if you predict correctly, you earn one point, but if you are incorrect, you will be DEDUCTED one point. If you don’t want to risk it, you can also abstain (no harm, no foul). For those that do not answer this question, the default is that this is a vote to abstain. If AND ONLY IF there is no clear winner at the end of the 7 rounds of the draft, the contest will be extended for ALL participants in which everyone will also be awarded one point for each collegiate free agent you predicted would be drafted by the Colts but was instead signed by the Colts after the draft.  Make your choices here by listing the round, choice A, B, or C for each round, with the name of the player, position and school AND your prediction on whether the Colts will trade the #15 pick this year. You may also write with each choice a little blurb explaining your rationale. Your 21 Colts selections and draft question this year are as follows:   Round 1 - #15 A, B, C Round 2 - #46 A, B, C Round 3 - #82 A, B, C Round 4 - #117 A, B, C Round 5 - #151 A, B, C Round 6 - #191 A, B, C Round 7 - #234 A, B, C   BONUS: Will the Colts trade the #15 pick this year?  1) Yes, they will trade up. 2) Yes, they will trade back. 3) No, they will stay put. 4) I don’t want to risk losing a point and will abstain.   Please be a good sport and do not just copy other contestant's selections. You can easily do some research on your own, since plenty of free draft services are available on the web. You also can make changes to your selections, but this can only be done before the contest is closed on Thursday at 11:00 AM CST April 25, 2024, on the first day of the draft. Good luck and let the best GM win!
    • I guess Im not that excited about the class for one thing, maybe Im missing something.  What I see is rookie DEs fighting for playing time if they got here, I dont see big upgrades over what we have.  I do see big upgrades elsewhere that would start, probably day 1
    • Why be anxious about things you have absolutely no control over? We'll see what happens after it's all done.
    • But from a reduced viewing audience. What's the world coming to?
    • Yeah I think it’s decent.    There are a few offensive guys I’d like in the 1st, but I think I’d prefer a DE at 15 and a WR in the 2nd or 3rd.    I really like DT Ruke Orhorhoro, but I think he goes in the 2nd.
