Success At The Head Coaching Position

As the question as to whom is, should be or will be the head coach of the Colts next year, I find it interesting how someone like the present DC of the Texans Wade Phillips is great as a DC but can't cut it as a head coach. Here is a man whose father was a great coach and is in his own right a great DC, yet can't get it done as a HC.

Now we see two more HC get fired today who as coordinators were considered very good. What is it in being the HC that these very good coordinators can't seem to take with them as HC and how does that impact on "whom" the Colts should look at as a possible replacement for Caldwell.

Here's the kicker: Caldwell was not a good college coach, not a good QB coach, and not a good head coach. He has failed on every spectrum. At least Wade Phillips found success with something! Caldwell's record at Wake Forest was poor (26-63), he didn't contribute to Peyton's overall capabilities (Tom Moore did that) and yet now we're asking him to head coach! The only reason Caldwell found success last season is because of Peyton Manning. Now with Manning injured, this was Caldwell's chance to step up. He not only didn't step up, he fell on his face.

The Colts need to hire Phillips, Gruden, Fisher, or someone else with legitimate NFL head coaching experience.

I don't understand how you can determine that. He was Manning's quarterback coach for eight years. How can you determine that he had nothing to do with Manning's success as a quarterback?

1. How many winning coaches have their been at Wake?

2. HOw do you know how successful or unsuccessful he was as the QB coach

As a coordinator, you are responsible for less things than you are as a coach (time outs, challenges, etc). Some guys like Wade are better at the X's and O's than at game management

All of the above plus, a HC have to be able to handle players' personalities and egos. They have to be able to evaluate ability and be willing to install a game plan that maximizes those abilities. That may include having the guts to evaluating what's working and what's not working and having the brains to tweak or change your philosophy. Look at some of our great coaches today, they change and evolve with the game and the players on their rosters.

motivating players is probably more important than anything. that's probably why great players don't become great coaches, they are self motivated and have god given athletic ability. you can be a very good coach without being a great offensive or defensive mind. if you have both, you are a hall of fame coach.

That is precisely what Rex Ryan is trying to do but it seems like he is trying too hard. There is a fine line between motivating and installing false confidence.

Great coaches inspire their players to play with a never say die attitude. As much as I dislike the Pats and the Steelers, I have to hand it to Belichick and Tomlin. When their teams are ravaged with injuries, the players seem to play even harder and win games that they probably shouldn't. The players believe in the coach and believe in themselves because the coaches believe in them and expect them to win. The Patriots are now pulling people off of the streets to play defense and are still winning. I don't like his media personality and I despise him for all of the bearings the Colts took at the hands of the Pats, but I respect him for his greatness as a head coach.

Because if he had then Painter would be a solid QB.

He's never been Painter's position coach.

On top of that, if a quarterback doesn't have it, he just doesn't have it. Painter played better when he had a gameplan designed for him and had the opportunity to practice with the starters, but he just isn't that good. You want him to turn a below average 6th round pick into a solid starter, and that's a bit unreasonable.
