If you had to pick 1 defensive player to have great game

I'm curios, why does everyone think Landry would do so well covering anybody, let alone Gronk??

Single covering Julius Thomas, JT burned him for 30 yards (almost scored) on the first drive.

Single covering D. Thomas - scored a TD.

Landry was ok against the run (besides the missed tackle against Anderson - that Redding & Werner also missed) but wasn't great at coverage. He has good speed, but should not ever be in single coverage against anyone.

I think Freeman should be on Gronk, and Brown would be better at helping cover over the top instead of Landry.

 You just don`t get it.

NOBODY says Landry will do well covering Gronk.

These astute fans just KNOW he will be a HUGE part, as will Adams, of Gronks coverage whether we like it or not. WE are just hoping Landry has a Great game. Like ya know, laying the Wood to Gronk, a Strength of Landry i thought.

Chuckle at Freeman staying with Gronk past 5 or so yards. He will get plenty of chances tho.

Oops, got it. Thanks.

Well then I hope Landry actually tackles well and doesn't go for his usual scud missile flying through the air and whiffing scenario.

Landry was actually very solid in coverage except for those two plays. Also, LL on DT is a scheme issue--we shouldn't expect him to be able to cover a WR of DT's caliber.

Landry is important this week for sure, but I said Art Jones followed by Walden last week b/c of their ability to stop the run and rush the passer. I'll stick with that...

This.

But I'll add Jones will be a big reason we stop the run this time. Can't allow 200 yards on us again by these guys

I think Jones will really help with the run game this time around -- and yes we need him to get some pressure.

The best way to beat NE, IMO, is to hit Brady early and often and with using as little complex blitz packages as possible (i.e., hit him with your front 7 and keep your DBs in coverage, as Brady can use his dink-and-dunk pass game like a run game if you leave anyone uncovered).

We need a big performance from the D as a whole -- on the line we need Jones/RJF/Redding/Hughes/Chapman to push that pocket back and get Brady uncomfortable.  We'll need our LBs to be timely when rushing the passer, and will really need them to set the edge and not allow their running backs to get into the secondary.  We'll need our secondary to play great again like they did last week, I am hoping to see Brown and Landry rotate as I think Brown is a tad better than Landry in coverage and we'll need Vontae and Toler to shut down the outside of the field.

My main guy this week though is Darius Butler -- with Amendola, LaFell, and Edelman the Patriots are usually going to have a dangerous option in the middle of the field to compliment Gronk.  We'll really need Butler to make whoever that player is invalid this game -- Brady will pick any defense apart if he's got one of those 3 guys to check down to.

Not sure if he can be considered 'defensive', but Pat McAffee (IMO) had his worst game of the year last week (as a punter... his kickoffs were great) -- we need the Boomstick back in this game to put the Pats in bad field position any time their offense touches the ball.

I agree with the statement of Landry having a good game this week, but I think overall what I want to see is a repeat of how we wrapped up, tackled, and pressed those receivers in the passing game last week. That type of performance is Exactly how you beat New England because they live off of taking short passes and getting run after the catch yardage.

If you can control the running game, pressure Brady, and jump on those short routes as soon as they catch the ball you really leave them with an issue because they don't really have anyone that can take the top off a defense.  Gronk can give you issues down the seam, but the rest of that WR corps is very limited to me in going over the top.  That's why they had to resort to trick plays in order to get somebody open deep for a quick score on the Ravens.  The deep game is not what makes that team tick in my opinion.

Go back and look at Ravens vs Patriots the year the Ravens beat them.  The Ravens rallied to the football very fast and put on a tackling clinic out there against the pass, and they had Ridley shook running the football. From a defensive standpoint,  if we can repeat or even improve upon last weeks performance I think we are going to be in pretty good hands.

It's not just one guy having a good game on defense that will win us the game.  We need everybody to have a good game!  If one person is a standout though I would have to say either DQ or Freeman, simply because covering Gronk.  Or Newsome, because we desperately need pressure on Brady.

    • Well this might be a crap shoe Sunday
    • That’s a nearly 20 year old article.  Not exactly relevant right now with the advancements in techniques and rehab.     He’s the youngest QB in the league, with the least experience in college.     This is his tryout year.  Have a little patience.
    • I Respectfully disagree.  I do agree that Shane is trying to win games.   What I don’t agree on is that he’s using AR to his full advantage to do so.  It may be injury concern, or that he feels AR isn’t quite back to 100% from surgery.  But he’s not using him like he did last season.    I’m not saying it’s wrong, and I hope it’s for the best.  But I think ARs development is more important to the franchise than winning right now.   I gave the example of Daniels.  They’re letting him run, it definitely helps them to stay in games.  That may not be a smart strategy if he ends up like RGknee, but you can see they’re trying to win now.
    • To use an off season surgery as an excuse is bollocks....    He needs to step up his game and start performing. In many ways he honestly looks like one of the 5 worst QB´s in the league and again, to use a shoulder surgery as an excuse is just pure bollocks.   There simply is no development in his game, and his huge upside is what? tell me?    I don´t think one second that we will ever come close to winning anything with him as our QB.   and to make things worse read this: https://www.espn.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=2176813
    • And yet, PFF didn't grade him all that high last year.  My response to this is that the scheme is designed for the MLB and the SS to make most of the tackles.  And they do. But last year, Franklin allowed a 77% completion rate with 10.2 yards per completion, and 7.9 yards per target.  In summary, he makes a lot of tackles by scheme, but he also allows a lot of completions. I don't think of him a Great.  Or even Good.  He's Fair.   https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/F/FranZa00.htm
