Bengals get A.J. Green back on the practice field | ProFootballTalk

The Bengals got some good news at practice Thursday morning.

According to Geoff Hobson of the team’s official website, wide receiver A.J. Green was back on the practice field.

Green was out yesterday because of the concussion he suffered in last week’s game against the Steelers, so he’s apparently been cleared.

That’s a huge boost for them in advance of Sunday’s game against the Colts, as they try to erase their stigma of a team that wilts in January.

Not surprising at all.  As I mentioned I while back, Peyton outright admitted that players often fake their preseason assessment to lower the bar for passing it in the regular season.  I believe this is human nature and widespread in the NFL.

Kind of a "wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more" moment.  [Monty Python reference for you youngsters out there who are not properly schooled in vintage comedy]

you think he / they are circumventing the protocol?

Not at all. The protocol has returning to practice at incrementally larger participation levels built in.  If he has no setbacks after each session, they increase the activity level each practice. Then test again after. If Green passes a full neurological test after today from independent neurologist Friday, then he'll get fully checked out by an independent physician Saturday.  That doctor has the power to fully clear or deny A.J. Green for the game.

NFL is a lucrative business where wins mean money for the million and billionaires who own and run the opertations , when it comes to the playoffs for a team like the Bengals who keep making it but cant win one... I would be extremely surprised if he was fully concussed and did not play. haha Jerry Jones had his RB play with a broken hand 6 days after surgery cause he could smell playoffs, this is the NFL

That argument might have flown in the 2000's and before, but not now.  The NFL just paid hundreds of millions of dollars in a settlement to around 5000 former players who claimed the NFL hid from them the potential long term effects of concussions and rushed them out to the field.  The NFL is not going to set themselves for even larger lawsuits failing to go by the harsher standards they created to eliminate further liability in the future.

Here's a real close look at how a doctor goes about instituting the protocol.  He even created an app for it, that > 1/2 teams use.  All will use it next year.  Enjoy-

Those NFL owners pay concussion-related lawsuits...and you're saying they'd skirt concussion protocols??

This is completely different than a broken hand.

I agree with you but I think the OP and others in this thread are suggesting otherwise.  There are tweets from ESPN writers in Cincy saying essentially this is just a step in the process.  Doesn't mean at all that he is playing.

ESPN's webpage said it best in their headline. Green practices, but still not cleared.

He was not cleared and could only do non contact drills. Below is from ESPN

CINCINNATI -- Bengals Pro Bowl receiver A.J. Green returned to practice Thursday morning in a limited capacity, but he remains under concussion protocol.

According to a Bengals official, Green still has to see a neuropsychologist and an independent neurologist before Sunday afternoon's wild-card-round playoff game at Indianapolis. Once he clears evaluations from both, he'll move beyond the protocol and will be allowed to play.

He will see the neuropsychologist Friday and the neurologist Saturday.

Because Green still is under phases of the protocol, he was allowed to participate only in non-contact portions of the Bengals' Thursday practice inside the University of Cincinnati's indoor practice facility. He was in uniform for warm-ups and position-specific drills during the open portion of the workout. During both, he wasn't seen participating much, simply walking around.

Was just going to post the same. Anyway.. he might play but for the most part this new policy seems to more often than not keep concussed players out for at least a week. There have been a few exceptions though.

Yes, I already posted this and the links to the info above.  As Green's activity is increased, so is his monitoring and testing.  They can even do it on the practice field / sideline with a smartphone app. If there is not setback along the way, he could be cleared to play by Saturday evening or Sunday morning.  If there is any regression at all, he'll likely not be ready, nor cleared, to play on Sunday.  We need to watch the story unfold day to day.

SCTTS reporting that Green has cleared protocol. Barring any set-back tomorrow, he's, ah, green-lighted to play.

No, that's not correct information.  He has to pass a neuropsychologists tests tomorrow before allowed full practice.  Then needs an independent neurologist check up on Saturday to clear protocol.  There are no shortcuts.  This was just released below, and confirms what has been said all thread.

"The hope is Green will be able to go through a full practice tomorrow before clearing that final concussion protocol hurdle Saturday morning. Right now, there is reason to be cautiously optimistic about Green's status for Wild Card Weekend. However, concussions and potential setbacks associated with them are unpredictable."

A.J. Green showed up to practice in sweats.  Does not appear to be progressing fast enough to clear protocol for Sundays game.  It's reported Green is suffering a triceps bruise as well.  And who knows how the toe is faring (caused him to miss our earlier matchup) as well.  Here's the latest scoop on Friday practice from Cincy-

Chances he gets cleared Saturday missing all practices and limited in 1 appears to be very slim...
