Nixon Back to Practice! More Depth?

Recommended Posts

Man. Why does it seem like every time we get a player back for the offensive line, another gets injured? Hopefully he's just sick or something.

Havn't heard anything about him being injured or sick.  It may just be a rest day for him.  He's getting up there and a lot of the older vets like Wayne get regular rest days.

As far as Nixon. . . I'm somewhat surprised he's still here.  It seems to me that he is essentially a third stringer.  There is no position on the line that if the starter gets injured the first guy we turn to is Nixon.

Of course the same could be said for either Holmes or AQ Shipley.  (I'm curious as to who is considered 2nd string at center.)

How is he practicing? Isn't he still technically on IR?

He was on "Designated to Return IR".  I'm not sure how the rules work for it.  Maybe it means he's off of IR now?

I know a couple of the guys on the Sirius NFL Channel are lobbying for more guys to be allowed the designated return label.  Makes sense, I hope it happens.

He can practice after six weeks, but can only play after 8 weeks. He can begin practicing at any point after 6 weeks, but once he practices, the team has 3 weeks to move him to the 53 man roster or shut him down for the year. So Nixon will either be on the roster by Week 10, or he'll be on IR.

Ahh!  So, basically the same rules at being on the PuP list, right?

Similar, but some differences. With PUP, the team has a six week window after Week 6 to get the player back to practice, and then a three week window to activate him once he starts practicing, and he can play as early as Week 7. With short term IR, you have no deadline to get the player back to practice. He can practice Week 17 for the first time. But he can't play before Week 9.

Also, for PUP, the player can't have practiced at all during camp. If he has, he isn't eligible for PUP. You'd have to use a short term IR.

Also, you can place as many players on PUP at the start of camp as you wish (they all count against the 90 man roster, up until first cuts are done). You only get one short term IR per year, although there is motivation from all sides for that to change. In such a physical sport, all of these rules, including the roster sizes and game day rosters, are too restrictive, IMO.

Anyways, it's a very similar mechanism, with some differences in the details.

Except for the PUP needs to be determined before training camp.  They can IR a player to return at any time but he has to be on IR for a minimum of 6 weeks (I believe).

It's something from the new CBA.  Players did not like getting injured early in the season and being put on IR because the team needed the roster spot.

Almost.  A player can't be put on short term IR during training camp or preseason...only after the regular season officially begins.  And the short term IR player has to remain on IR for 8 weeks from the date he's put on IR.

I like the depth on the 0-line with this team.  It's probably as good as we've had since the Superbowl win.  Like someone else mentioned, I want to see Castanzo,Mewhort,Harrison,Thorton, Cherilus get some time time to gel before grinding it out in the Post Season
