What's With The Talk Of Phillip Rivers Aging?

Well, technically, we are all get older...anyone heard that Mitch Hedberg joke? "People always say 'here's a picture of me when I was younger'...EVERY picture of you is from when you were younger"

As for Rivers, I'm not sure what the problem is. I drafted VJax and Rivers in fantasy hoping they would have an offensive output similar to previous seasons...now I'm last in my league. I think it was Mike Lombardi who speculated as to a possible injury they are hiding. From the few Chargers games I've seen this year, they simply don't play physical enough. Oakland punched them in the mouth on that Thursday night game. Norv's time in San Diego is most likely over

They've been hit with the injury bug, Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson can't stay healthy. Ryan Mathews has missed games too, it may be Rivers doesn't have as many weapons as he's used to, but I think it's more than just that.

Yeah I heard he's playing through an injury. There's whispers around here also Brady is playing with some pain in his shoulder..which would explain some of these slow starts in games then becoming more like himself as the game goes on and it lossens up.

We just never know these things for obvious reasons.

Please don't everyone say Norv can come here. rotfl That is one of the last coaches I would want to see coaching the Colts.

People are just jumping on the hater bandwagon while he's struggling. Kind of like Carson Palmer his last year in Cincy or Kurt Warner in New Jersey. Palmer hasn't proven himself yet, but I think he'll emerge as a top QB again and Warner obviously led the Cardinals to the SB after escaping the Giants.

He's having an off year, way too soon to call him done.

Rivers is having a seriously crappy year - but I am unaware of any serious talk of him retiring, get real. He's a mentally tough guy who abhores losing. He's usually able to mentally shut it off after he makes a mistake and move on. This year he's forcing things that aren't there and that's where most of his mistakes are. His mistakes are the kind made by someone who cares "too much" and takes "too much responsibility." I'd rather have that kind of leader than someone who's in it for himself.

He'll get it turned around. Whether it will be in time for this year - I don't know. Much more fun to watch our games when he's hot I will admit ;-)

This is going to require some explanation. I don't trust you.

Of course this is after the topic was created, but looking at the Tim Tebow game, it sure looks like Rivers is sucking it up. I wouldn't say he's done though. He's a lot better than 50% of the league's starting QB's.

Rivers has struggled early in the year, and most of that was his own fault. The past two games we're down to 2 Offensive linemen, 2 of our original starters are playing. Tell me a single team that can win with that situation. Not an excuse, but it is the reason for the struggles the last two games. He's on his butt way too much or hurried or his receivers are dropping passes in their hands or they're running the wrong routes and aren't where they should be.

Lots of parts of this machinery that are contributing to it's being broken.

    • I couldn't agree more with the bolded statement.  Once a player is on the team, the only thing his draft position does for him (aside from the money) is maybe give him a little more time to develop.  Mainly because teams are reluctant to admit that their research didn't pan out and they want to see their guy succeed.   As far as defense, I feel the number one responsibility of the GM and the coach is to help the franchise QB be the franchise QB, if you get what I mean.  And until that's proven, if it means sacrificing a need on defense in order to enhance the QB's arsenal, so be it.  But that's just me...
    • Yeah I didn’t get the impression he felt a huge need to draft a CB.    He was asked about mentioning YAC guys and he said every team wants them. The Colts have had meetings with the two top YAC guys in the draft - Brock Bowers and Malachi Corley. I absolutely think we’re taking Bowers if he falls to us and I even think we may jump up a couple of picks to land him.    If Bowers gets taken ahead of us I feel pretty certain we’re trading back hoping to land another 3rd rounder.    I didn’t catch if they were talking about draft targets or players already on the roster when they talked about on dimensional guys? My initial thought was Pierce.    I think it’s a given we’re taking at least one Olineman this draft, but that’s not really anything new.
    • My guesses based on this presser:   - Ballard will NOT draft a CB in the 1st... maybe at all? Everything he's saying seems to suggest he likes the group we have and he wants to see them play and have a chance to develop. I'm almost certain if Mitchell for example is there at 15... we pass on him... either for trade back or for an offensive weapon... or DE? - Ballard WILL trade back. If not in the 1st... then later in the draft... but most probably in the 1st. IMO he pretty much advertised to his potential customers by telling them how many 1st round grades he has. Teams 19-21 are welcome to call and will receive warm greetings from Ballard. Rams, Steelers, Dolphins?  - He seemed to be talking about a specific someone one dimensional offensive weapon when he was talking about them just having had a meeting about a certain player... about whether them and the coaching staff see the way he can be used the same way... and if they agree on this, IMO this is a potential target for the Colts. The names that come to mind - Brian Thomas Jr and Xavier Worthy... A lot of the other WRs are more well rounded...  - The Colts LOVE the OL class both at the top and in depth. I have seen some OL experts suggest there might be 10 starting centers in this draft... and the OTs class in the 1st is like nothing I've ever seen. Can we draft an OL in the 1st? Doubt it... but absolutely expect a few shots on day 2 and 3.
    • We have TWO top 10 tackles in Raimann and Smith though? We need depth, sure, but I hope we’re not looking for depth in the 1st round…
    • True, but where they were drafted has no relevance to how they play now which is what would keep a team from drafting Bowers.    I’d like if we got another weapon for AR, but I feel we have a lot of needs - especially on defense. OL is probably the only choice I’d be really disappointed with.
