I am in awe

Me too! Love it! I think we are going to be bringing pressure from everywhere. Last 2 years they have showed glimpses of good play but this D is way more aggressive. They took out the whole starting secondary pretty early and out d still looked really good with our front 7. I've waited for this moment for years.

I think the Giants are terrible.

I'm also reserving judgment on our defensive front until we play a QB who likes to scramble. Contrary to popular belief, our run defense wasn't that bad last season. It was running QBs that really ate us up, and a handful of big carries from backs (like the 73 yarder against New England). So if we can contain the scrambling and read-option QBs, then we might have something. Geno Smith and Michael Vick did some damage last week.

I'd also like to see how we try to cover Jimmy Graham. If we bracket him, are we sacrificing coverage in other places? I hope Brees plays.

But, in general, I agree that our defense looked great. Tackled well, stopped up the run, got plenty of push on passing downs, covered well, etc. That's certainly encouraging.

I have been thinking the same thing..

Chapman, Jones and Redding seem to all be in the same page. I love the addition of a D'Qwell Jackson as a leader and pairing him with Freeman. If Werner can keep improving and guys like Walden, Sheppard, and Jean Francoise and step up. We will be in good shape.

Wow, I know I wasn't the only one who was thinking that. We couldn't stop Dalton, Wilson or Smith.

I'm confused.

I was talking about scrambling QBs. Dalton didn't hurt us with his legs. I'm not sure what Smith you're talking about.

Russell Wilson had over a hundred yards on us, so yeah, he qualifies. We tightened up the read-option defense as the game went along, with Jerrell Freeman making a really nice stop. Same with Terrell Pryor, who ate up a ton of yardage on the ground.

Andy Dalton killed us on 3rd down last year by scrambling. On 3rd and short, he'd take off. Smith did the exact same in the playoffs.

It has been a gradual process but I think for the first time since Pagano has been here he is so much closer to having his type of "guys" and the defense is getting more capable of playing according to the way he had envisioned it - the way the Ravens played when he was there. Not saying we are "there" yet necessarily - have to wait and see - but getting much closer to the way he likes to play and scheme - I think he is getting pretty close to having the core group in place.

The defense does indeed look great. I saw much better contain, curious to see how well it holds against mobile QB's with a penchant for scrambling (As Superman so studiously pointed out).

Conversely, the NYG offense is just terrible. Coughlin is going to be under heavy scrutiny, and if things flop like I think they will in NY, Coughlin is out in 2015. How long Eli remains is a curious topic.

I can't wait until Mathis gets back.  I'm just waiting on the point in the season where Manusky decides to rush Mathis and Newsome off the edges at the same time.  Hopefully he'll put that combination in.  Move Werner inside with somebody like Francois, Jones, or Redding, and rush Mathis and Newsome off the edges.  That would be like a blur!
