Cam Newton to Undergo Ankle Surgery

Fx Stryker

Great.....   they burned 2 and a half months of off-season hoping it would calm down.

It doesn't.     NOW, they operate and it will take 4 months to heal.    Great.    I won't be surprised when it takes 6 months to heal.

Boy, Carolina is having a rough, rough off-season.........................

Cam injured his right ankle in week 16 against the Jets. DT Sheldon Richardson tackled Cam from behind and rolled over Cam's ankle.

The team now confirmed Cam played the week 17 division clinching game against ATL & the playoff game against SF with a "severely" injured ankle. Had the stakes not been what they were he would have been sidelined.

It was especially obvious he was lame against SF. He was immobile, reluctant to run, and walked gingerly while grimacing the entire game.

Injury is to a stretched tendon in his ankle. Surgery will be performed to tighten the tendon. He will be out 4 months and miss OTAs, but should be back in time for training camp. His rookie season the league was locked out all summer & he still managed 4,800 Yd & 35 TD, so he should be ready to go without concern.

People are questioning the timing, but that was at Cam's request. He is set to graduate from Auburn in May & did not want to delay his final semester until next year. They decided to give it time to see if it would heal & if not it could be done over his spring break & still leave enough time to be ready for training camp. Still sore so they're going ahead with surgey.

FYI...

Cam maturity punch lines are worn out. He has grown exponentially & I'd the leader of his franchise. The day Steve Smith was released, Cam hand wrote a lengthy letter to Steve thanking him for everything & wishing him luck moving forward. Cam stepped up this year as a vocal leader in the locker room. He was the first guy in the building every day, & the last to leave. He held his teammates accountable. He led by example. His coaches & teammates reject Vincent's that he "pouts." Ron Rivera called it a "Michael Jordan-esque drive to win" & that he simply hates losing & refuses to accept it. He came to a 2-14 franchise where players were content with losing & were just there collecting a check. Rivera said Newton singlehandedly changed that culture & will not accept tolerating losing in his locker room.

The kid is off to the best start by a QB in history. He cannot escape criticism.

Not sure what you were inferring from this thread but no one was questioning Cam's ability or leadership. The fact that he waited this long to get the surgery is what is surprising. Appreciate you explaining it in detail but I have read reports that the ankle goes back to 2013.

And Wilson's start has been better ...

My thoughts exactly.

Nicks also didn't go because there would be no one opposite him... when Steve Smith went so did any chance of someone coming to the team. I guess now they know it will be a tough go in Panthervillle so surgery is a option.

Glad to see someone else see's this as a benefit of coming to the colts.

When I last said that I got ridiculed because people said "No he will be the #1 WR in CAR and that is what he wants"

You can be number 1 in Carolina, and defenders will eat you alive... even Batman needed Robin to help out from time to time. As a Colt Nicks has the benefit of having not 1, but 4 other superheros on the field at the same time. Not just Cam doing his Superman impersonation.

Panthers HC Ron Rivera spoke to the media yesterday & said that Cam's ankle injury was suffered at Auburn in 2010. Every year he has played through the pain & in each off season he has rehabbed it but this year it was not healing as it normally had. He contacted the team while working out at Auburn (he's back taking classes) & told them it was not getting better. Upon evaluating him they decided to go ahead & have the operation performed & fix the ankle permanently.

So, in short, Cam played his first 3 seasons in the NFL on a bum ankle. Over 2,000 rushing yards & 28 TDs on a bad ankle. I wonder what he'll do this year with two good wheels.

This may also explain why his accuracy was spotty. He'd show perfect form & throw a perfect laser into tight coverage on a play. Then have horrible footwork & sail a pass to a wide open receiver. Maybe the pain in his ankle was hurting his mechanics?

And Wilson's start has been better ...

Wilson is no where near the level of Newton. Put Cam in Seattle & they still win the Super Bowl. Put Russell in Carolina & there's no way they win 12 games.

By your logic of team success defining a QBs individual play Roethlisberger & Mark Sanchez were better QBs their first 2 years than Andrew Luck or Cam Newton.

It what way is he off to the best start in history?

first 3 seasons, player A vs player B:

A: W/L 25-23 (0-1), 1× Div Champ, 2× Pro Bowler

B: W/L 26-22 (0-1), 1× Div Champ, 2× Pro Bowler

A: 13,364 Yd, 92 TD, 48 t/o

B: 12,538 Yd, 90 TD, 64 t/o

Player A- Cam Newton

Player B- Peyton Manning

FYI...

Manning played 4 years of college in the SEC & entered the league a polished player ready to start. Newton only played 1 year of Div 1 football & entered the league labeled a project player who needed time to develop.

Newton could finish 2014 as follows...

8-8 W/L, 3212 Yd, 27 TD, 41 INT

... & he'd still have more wins, more yards, more touchdowns, & fewer turnovers than Peyton Manning after 4 seasons.

Newton has more yards than any QB in NFL history through 3 seasons & only Marino had more TDs. At the same time Joe Flacco is the only QB with fewer turnovers than Newton through 3 seasons (min 40 starts).

Cam Newton & Tom Brady are the only QBs since 2011 that rank in the top 5 in each of the following categories; yardage, touchdowns, turnovers.

Since 2011 (min 40 starts)

Yardage

1) Brees- 15,959

2) Stafford- 14,655

3) Brady- 14,444

4) Rivers- 13,856

5) Newton- 13,364

Touchdowns

1) Brees- 133

2) Rodgers- 106

3) Brady- 105

4) Stafford- 96

5) Newton- 92

Turnovers

1) Smith- 23

2) Rodgers- 24

3) Brady- 36

4) Romo- 46

5) Newton- 48

& before somebody inevitably says Newton has gaudy stats but he isn't a winner....

Almost 30 QBs have been drafted #1, Bradshaw & Luck are the only QBs drafted #1 overall to win a playoff game their first 3 seasons.

Marino (27) & P Manning (26) are the only QBs drafted #1 overall to win more games their first 3 seasons than Newton (25).

Don't matter, the Panthers are a joke.

No way they are winning 8 games this up coming season. They were a fluke anyway, just barely barely beating better teams in the regular season, getting blown out bad on the road, and then ultimately laying down in the playoffs.

I like Cam a lot and think he has a high ceiling but something is missing. Can't quite put my figure on it but he seems fragile emotionally. Kaepernick came into his house and stepped all over him and Cam just let him it seemed. Wilson and Kaep seem more mentally tough at this stage of the game IMO.

Also, what on earth is Carolina doing this off-season? Forget 8-8. Cam will be lucky to win any games unless they get him some WRs soon. Not to mention his ankle that will keep him out 4 months.

Carolina still has their #1 option in Greg Olsen. He is just as good as the #1 option from the last 2 Super Bowl champions. Don't believe me? Compare the stats. They're near identical.

Carolina's defense is just as good as Seattle's. (Seahawks D 9th best scoring in history; Carolina finished 12th best all time)

The new GM is purging the horrible contracts from the pervious regime while keeping the core intact & creating space to lock up young stars Newton, Hardy, Kuechly, & Lotulelei in the future.

Carolina is carrying dead cap money from former players Smith, Gross, Beason, Anderson as well as an untouchable hit from Stewart. Williams & Godfrey will be cut in June, which will free up space this year & in the future.

Everybody is crying that Carolina let all these players walk in free agency & gutted their WR corp & note they are doomed & will suck.

Newsflash-

1- Carolina doesn't have any money

2- They used what little they had initially to tag Hardy, a 24yo DE who is a monster.

3- The players they let walk weren't even that good. They were all overpaid. Munnerlyn is a nickel getting paid #1 CB money. Mitchell got $25mil guaranteed. He came to Carolina last year as a scrub that island didn't even keep at minimum. Ginn got paid 12mil in Arizona. He came to Carolina after having, what, 5 catches the 2 previous years in SF? And he still drops too much. LaFell isn't good either. Smith is washed up & needed to be cut. His high last year was 66 yards. He couldn't even break 70 yards in a game as the #1 WR. If kept Carolina would've owed him 20mil guaranteed in '15 & '16.

4- They replaced them with better players at about 1/10th of the salary. Cotchery/Avant/Underwood had more TDs last year & similar catches & yardage. Their cap hit is $4mil this year compared to $16mil for the guys they let go.

5- Harper & Decoud are better than Mitchell-Mikell-Munneelyn. Thru will look great behind Carolinas front 7. They also added CB Cason, who was a pro bowler under Rivera in SD. And again, the new guys are making a fraction of what the old guys are.

6- Cam came in as a rookie during a lockout. He missed all off season activities. He still put up 4,800 yards & 35 TDs. He also ran for 2,200 yards & 28 TD in 3 years on a bum ankle he hurt in college. Now he's actually gonna be healthy.

Carolina has improved their roster while saving money & purging themselves of old overpaid players.

Carolina was 7-9 last off season & had no money. They filled all their holes with a bunch of cast offs & nobody's that took 1 year minimum deals. They went 12-4 & won their division with a Pro Bowl QB & the 12th best scoring defense in league history.

Yet following the same model this off season at 12-4 they are gonna suck? Lol

Dave Gettleman had done a tremendous job. He's makinga lot of people look stupid that he had to wait this long to get a GM job.

Carolina has a young dynamic QB who is shattering all time yardage & TD records year by year.

Carolina still has their stable of RBs & their #1 receiving target (Olsen).

Carolina gets back a young stud at LG in Silatolu, who was injured last year. Several other OL reserves returning from injury. OT positions will be heavily upgraded early in the draft.

Carolina returns the entire front 7 (starters & reserves) that is arguably the best in the NFL & improved their secondary thru free agency. They upgraded a defense that was the 12th best scoring defense in NFL history.

Carolina has the reigning NFL coach of the year.

Carolina is gonna be overlooked heavily this year but it shouldn't be surprising when they win their division again.

I just don't see enough talent on O (yet). The draft is still looming. Olsen is a nice player but Cam is going to need more than 6 TDs and 800 yards from his best option. The other three guys? Cotchery/Avant/Underwood - are all nice role players but not one legit threat. Between the three of them they had about 100 catches and 16 TDs. Again not good enough yet.

Olsen had a better year than Tate did, & also Boldin in 2012. If he's as good as the primary receiver from the last 2 SB winners that's good enough.

Carolina has an elite defense. They don't throw a lot. They have 3 stud RBs & a dangerous QB. They run a ball control offense. They want to control the clock& beat you down. And they do it very well. They didn't put up big yardage or points last year but they were among the top of the rankings in time of possession, 3rd dish conversion, red zone offense, etc. And Cam was clutch last year. Their offense isn't flashy or exciting but it is extremely effective & it compliments the defense.

A lot of people say they have a Ferrari QB & they're using him as a Civic, which may be true, but due to salary cap issues & their defense it's what they have to do.

It kinda irritates me that they are turning the most physically gifted QB in NFL history into a Trent Dilfer game manager, but for the time being they have to. And it works, so who cares.

Cotchery is better than any WR they had last year. Throw in Avant, Underwood, & a high pick & they'll be fine.

They won a bunch of games by the skin of their teeth and then what happened in the playoffs? What happened to this brilliantly awesome team that is supposed to be so great? They got blown out....after a first round bye, and a home game.

The Panthers were a fluke last year. No way they win 8 games next year, and they were barely winning those games to begin with.

Their defense looked OK and decent half the time but when it really mattered in the playoffs, they were a no show.

I know you all hate the Saints more than anybody since Brees got Peyton's ring, but we didn't lay down in the playoffs, and we actually won a playoff game (on the road) where Carolina got blown out at home.

6-10 next year, book it.

You really have a Saints complex. The guy posting is a Panthers fan not a Colts fan. I rarely if ever see your team mentioned up here by Colts fans as you are in a different conference. 2009 seems like eons ago I would think to Colts fans since the entire org has changed over since then.

The Panthers two best offensive players were severely injured against SF. Cam Newton had a bad ankle & Steve Smith had a torn PCL.

Give Brees a severely swollen ankle with a damaged ligament & Graham a torn knee, then see how far New Orleans goes.

Carolina moved the back at will on SF the first half, then Newton & Smith were wobbling around & ineffective.

Besides, didn't that defense + slap your Saints in week 16 while Cam Newton drove the entire field for a game winning TD to beat New Orleans & win the division?

Carolina's defense was the 12th best scoring defense in NFL history.

That isn't a fluke.

Rivera 3rd yr DC at Chicago- #1 defense

Rivera 3rd yr DC at San Diego- #1 defense

Rivera 3rd yr HC at Carolina- #2 defense

That isn't a fluke either.

I know you Saints fans absolutely hate the Panthers. Especially now that they have Cam Newton, who ran thru your beloved LSU like a freight train. But you just need to get two comfy at looking up to Carolina in the standings. They aren't going anywhere.

5 most important positions-

QB, DE, LT, MLB, DT

Carolina has a young star at 4 of them.

Newton, 24- future of the position along with Luck.

Kuechly, 23- already considered the best LB in the NFL.

Hardy, 25- top 5 end in the league.

Lotulelei, 22- monster & should've been a top 3 pick last year.

What is New Orleans core? A QB in his mid 30s?

Wilson is no where near the level of Newton. Put Cam in Seattle & they still win the Super Bowl. Put Russell in Carolina & there's no way they win 12 games.

These types of unprovable claims based on imaginary scenarios are both tedious and ridiculous.

Newton could finish 2014 as follows...

8-8 W/L, 3212 Yd, 27 TD, 41 INT

... & he'd still have more wins, more yards, more touchdowns, & fewer turnovers than Peyton Manning after 4 seasons.

And Russell Wilson could go 2-14 with 13 TD passes and 22 INTs and still have more wins, more TD passes and fewer INTs than Newton after three years.

Newton & Manning were drafted #1 by the worst teams. Wilson was drafted by one of the 3 most talented teams in football.

Too bad Cam has those 28 rushing TDs & Wilson has those tiny hands that fumble all the time.

Huh?

Russell won't touch Cam's marks.

92 TD 48 turnovers

    • I suppose Murphy being the next Donald is possible, but I wouldn’t think it’s likely.     As for Smith playing right tackle, I believe I was simply echoing Ballard’s initial viewpoint.  That Smith’s short arms made him an unlikely RT.  And that he had to be talked into it by Morocco Brown and Ed Dodds.   I don’t think I was stating MY personal view.    As for skillset vs measurements.  I think it’s been an issue for all of us because Ballard has such specific requirements for each position.  So we factor that into our judgements.
    • Bold prediction?    I will predict either Kwity or Pierce will be traded sometime during the draft.
    • I will post a few mock drafts from people who are really highly ranked in The Huddle Reports' mock draft competitions over the last few years:   Brendan Donahue(tied for highest score over the last 5 years) https://www.sharpfootballanalysis.com/analysis/2024-nfl-mock-draft-brendan-donahue/ Interesting things:  -Vikings trade up to 5 for McCarthy -Colts get Brock Bowers at 15.    Eddie Brown(tied for highest score over the last 5 years) https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/2024-nfl-mock-draft-eddie-brown-s-final-first-round-projections/ar-AA1nCo1i Interesting things: - JC Latham at 5 to the Chargers(Jeremiah has the same pick) - Rome Odunze to the Giants at 6, Nabers to Atlanta at 8 - Philly trades up to 12 for Quinyon Mitchell - Colts get Brock Bowers(seems to be a trend...)     David P. Woods(3d highest score over the last 5 years): https://www.thescore.com/nfl/news/2900023 Interesting things:  - Vikings trade up to 5 for McCarthy(seems like this is the current divide - this pick will be either Latham to the Chargers or Vikings trade up) - Odunze to Giants at 6!!! Nabers to Atlanta at 8. Second one with those specific picks.  - Colts get Quinyon Mitchell   Ben Standig (3 times Huddle report mock draft champion!): https://www.benstandig.com/post/ben-standig-s-2024-nfl-mock-draft-final Interesting things:  - Vikings trade up to 5 for McCarthy - Colts TRADE UP to 8 for Odunze!! Interesting....    Sean Green(Last year's Huddle report mock draft co-champion): https://www.sportsgamblingpodcast.com/2024/04/23/2024-nfl-mock-draft-sean-green-final-mock-draft/ Interesting things:  - Nabers goes 4 to Arizona, MHJ 6 to Giants - Chargers go Taliese Fuaga at 5.  - Colts get Quinyon Mitchell
    • Much better bounce back Tuesday. They seemed to find a certain confidence they lacked Sunday. The defense was really good. They weathered the Lillard storm and seemed to bother him more as the game went on.
    • Obviously he doesn’t seem to be too informed with Colts current events.  Lol
