Superman's 2014 mock w/ UDFAs

Recommended Posts

Superman already pointed out but from the sounds of it, you're swapping the responsibilities of a 0 tech and 1 tech.  I thought Mookie did fairly well at 0 tech but was more suited for 1, 3 or 5 tech.

Also wanted to point out in a bit of irony, Mookie now finds himself once again on a 4-3 team that's going to transition to a 3-4 team.

He had a pretty decent year in the 4-3 as well, 3 sacks, starting only 6 games

Good debate above.  I am not giving up on Chap at NT.  I want my 3-4 NT to demand double teams.  That is his job 85% of the time...probably 95..Chapman also can bring the 'push' when asked to.

I was amazed at Jeris Pendleton's athleticism....what did you guys think?  The man is huge and can run.

Can you post that link please

rotoworld:

Impending free agent CB Vontae Davis is considered a "heavy favorite" to be re-signed by the Colts.
Some questioned Colts GM Ryan Grigson when he gave up a second-round pick for Davis during the 2012 preseason, but he got plenty of value. Davis was PFF's No. 3 corner this season, breaking out as an every-down press corner and dominating the right side. The Colts should be willing to pony up the cash it's going to take to retain him. Davis is our No. 4 unrestricted free agent corner, behind only Brent Grimes, Aqib Talib and Alterraun Verner. Jan 14 - 10:32 AM

Thank you.  I was on PFF and did not see that rank.  I am not a paying customer either.

That's what I got from the article I've re-posted a couple of times.  NO PROMOTIONAL POSTING ON THE SITE2013-articles/june/explaining-the-colts-3-4-defensive-line.html

From what I got from that, the defensive front 2 gaps on the strong side but 1 gaps on the weak side.  So Chapman (0-tech NT), Redding (5-tech DE) and Walden play 2 gap principles while RJF (3-tech DT) and Mathis play slightly modified 1 gap principles.  If I'm understanding correctly that would mean Walden would be responsible for the Strong Side TE, Redding the RT and RG, Chapman the C and LG leaving RJF one on one with the LT, forcing the offense to use another TE, RB or FB on Mathis.

Now obviously those aren't the exact matchups we get every time, but they do get that quite a bit.  I remember seeing Mathis several times being blocked by a back or TE.  And if the offense decides to slide protection to the Mathis side then either Redding or Chapman are going to be left one on one which they should beat pretty much every time.  The Pats left Chapman one on one on, I believe, the 2nd play of the game and he almost swallowed Brady.

Superman, I posted that link in another thread and you said you disagreed with part of what it said.  I meant to ask, did you disagree with what the article said or the principles that the article pointed out?  In other words, did you think the article was incorrect, or did you think it was correct but you disagreed with some of the described defensive philosophy?

Not sure, I briefly reviewed the article just now and don't know what I might have disagreed with.

Did anyone notice NFL.com has posted what appears to be combine numbers from some of the 2014 draft class, Maybe Pro Day? Regardless they have Ra'shede Hageman, Defensive Lineman out of Minnesota benching 225 41 times, Quite impressive......Kony Ealy is listed as running an amazing 4.27 40, I knew the kid was very fast...its evident on film but I was expecting something in the mid maybe early 4.4's http://www.nfl.com/combine/top-performers#year=2014&workout=BENCH_PRESS&position=DL

there haven't been any pro-days yet. I have no idea where they are getting these numbers from.

if you believe those numbers, they also have Hageman running a 4.33 at 311 lbs.

took some digging but here's the thread I was referring to:

http://forums.colts.com/topic/25601-what-can-we-do-to-improve-our-defense/page-4#entry717986

i was mostly confused because what you described about how our defense works seemed to have been inline with what the article said.  So that's why I wasn't sure what you were disagreeing with and I just forgot to go back and reply in that thread.  Not sure if seeing it again will jar the memory but figured it was worth a shot. :)

He must have been running when we had the 40MPH winds across the entire nation...."wind aided.' :)  Like my trash can 'running' down the street...timed at 4.99 :)

I guess it was a minor nitpick. Just that the article advocates the backside 1-gapping, which I think can be problematic on misdirection or slow-developing plays.

I also interchange DE/DT the opposite of how other people/sites do. So I might have just confused the strongside/weakside responsibilities.

The site you just listed and CBS Sports http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings

CBSSports get there stats from NFL Draft Scout. At the top it says, "Powered By NFLDraftScout.com"

I think those are guesstimated 40 times or just times that were reported at some point. By no means are they offical. As for NFL.com, I have no idea where they got those stats from. They seem very wrong.

I just saw Hageman run the 40 on the All Star Challenge (not a true 40). That must have been a loooooooong 4.33 seconds...

How's this draft? I traded out of the second round, picked up an extra third and two fourths. From first-pick.com:

Your Picks:

Round 3 Pick 6 (JAX): Keith McGill, CB, Utah (B-)

Round 3 Pick 26: Yawin Smallwood, ILB, Connecticut (A)

Round 4 Pick 5 (JAX): Jeremiah Attaochu, OLB, Georgia Tech (B+)

Round 4 Pick 14 (JAX): Caraun Reid, DT, Princeton (C+)

Round 5 Pick 26: Michael Schofield, OT, Michigan (D+)

Round 6 Pick 27: Cody Hoffman, WR, Brigham Young (B+)

Round 7 Pick 16: Jacob Pedersen, TE, Wisconsin (B-)

I specifically like Smallwood at inside backer...athleticism we need.

Attaochu was actually better in sacks when he played OLB in 2012...so even though he played DE this past year, he IS familiar with the position...a huge +

Reid has grown on me :)  Up over 300???

I also love Hoffman.  I saw about e BYU games and all the kid does is catch the football with his hands.  We still see too many receivers using the body.

Like it Sup!

Those trade offers get out of hand. I had stopped considering them, but because I'm starting to fall in love with a lot of the 3-5 round prospects, I wanted to see what I could do with a trade down. I'm SHOCKED you were able to get Dee Ford in the third, I don't think that will happen. But this draft is starting to look deeper and deeper, particularly at the positions that our team needs young playmakers at. I kind of wanted us to trade down last year, but I'm really wanting us to trade down this year, especially if we don't have a 6th rounder (which some feel we won't because of the Gordy trade).

I said Grigson will earn his money in this draft AND the UFAs.  A ton of good football players in this draft...and post draft.

Yeah, from 5 to 14 picks is kind of crazy. I like the players, though.

I love Stork's athleticism....and knows how to win..  Drafting a center two years in a row is kind of crazy to me, however.  Do it right the first time?  :)

I agree that we should of done it right the first time. This pick of Stork is assuming that Satele is let go and we don't take Mack, which is unlikely anyway. It'd be a good battle between Bryan Stork and Khaled Holmes. Either way, it'd fill a weakness.
