dont agree about trading him, but hes right where he says the manning era is almost over. we are 4 years at most away from having someone not named manning leading the franchise

Man, do you really think the Polians want to be known as the guys who shipped out Peyton? You know who would jump on that? Yep, Rex Ryan. He would give us a couple of first round picks right off the bat and ship Mark Sanchez and maybe Bart Scott our way, I just hope we don't do such a trade. Then, we may realize the folly of that trade when the Jets pick No.32 two years in a row :).

Giving Sanchez to us would be a deal breaker for me. :yuk:

Just one more reason I'm glad Dungy isn't around anymore. He's become a joke. He jumps on and off of different team's bandwagons worse than fans do. He also predicted there was no way Manning would miss any time this year.

Contrary to what most are saying though, if the Colts are going to draft Luck then I agree that they should trade Manning, Freeney and Dallas Clark and get whatever they can from them. Let Wayne and Mathis walk and receive some sort of compensatory picks for them in 2013. The veterans may get traded to a team that wants to win now and the Colts get as many draft picks as possible to help rebuild around their young QB.

They could keep the vets around for a year for one last run together before parting ways with them, but that would be a tough sell to Wayne and Mathis imo. Though no guarantee there will be enough cap space to resign both of these guys anyway so that may wind up not being a problem.

The question is do you trade away your proven QB to start a college QB who has never played one minute in the NFL? Do you want to take the chance that he could very well be the next Peyton or that he could very well be the next NFL bust?

If the Colts take the gamble and trade Peyton and this kid winds up being the next NFL bust, they've done screwed themselves over.

My opinion No I wouldn't trade Manning for Luck. That would have been as dumb as if they had traded Freeney when they drafted Hughes. Considering that Hughes hasn't really proved himself yet. I can't believe Dungy even made a comment like that. rotfl

Question 2 can you see Irsay trading Manning for Luck?

Guess it proves you never know what is coming out of the previous coaches mouth. haha I'm sure others would go for this since Manning is getting older but to each their own. I personally think if Manning feels he can't perform to his standards he will choose to retire then. He's not like Brett Farve in that respect. JMO of course

If the Colts are in a position to draft Andrew Luck, and if Peyton Manning is healthy, then the Colts will have a difficult decision to make.

The reality is, Manning and Luck can't co-exist on the team - not necessarily from a personality perspective - but from an asset management perspective.

If Manning is healthy, then the Colts should be using their pick to make the team as strong as possible in the here and now. Any player taken in the early first round - 1 to 5 or 1 to 10 (some might argue the entire first round) - has to be able to help the team right away. Somebody who needs 3 to 4 years of 'seasoning' shouldn't be selected first over all. If you take Luck and stick him on the bench, you have thrown away that pick's usefullness.

And even though Luck, as first pick, is not going to demand the jaw-dropping contracts that other first picks got (like Sam Bradford) thanks to the new CBA, he is still going to get a pretty good salary and that will be money that won't be available to shore up the rest of the team. In many ways, the team will be treading water waiting on Manning to move on so Luck can take over.

Football careers are notoriously short. Four years is a long time to be sitting around and Luck is likely to be impatient waiting for his career to start. "Impatient" may be an understatement. As a first pick overall, Luck should be ready to play right away and he no doubt will believe that himself. Meanwhile, Manning won't be happy knowing that Luck is staring daggers at him from the bench. And the fans are likely to be torn, wanting their shiny new player to be utilized. Kyle Orton can attest to how tough a situation that is to play under. I would like to think that Manning would have built more credit with the fans than Orton could hope for, but remember how quickly Bob Lamey turned on him last year.

It will be an unpleasant situation for everyone and it is unlikely the team will have any success.

So the other choice the Colts have (besides using their pick on someone other than Luck or trading it for a king's ransom) is to take Luck and cut Manning loose. Say "Thanks for everything, Peyton, particularly that 'out clause' you insisted on. Now clear out your locker and security will escort you off the premises."

I'm not sure what sort of trade they could arrange. I'm sure Peyton would prefer to be allowed to choose where he went. The team would owe him that. So, what team are there out there that need an upgrade in QB to be "special"?

Jets? Cowboys? Ravens?

You can be sure he would be motivated.

As a side note, I should also point out that the situation with Aaron Rodgers that everyone points to as an example doesn't really apply here. First, Rodgers wasn't a first pick over all. But the other thing that people forget is that the Packers didn't plan on having Rodgers on the bench for an extended period. Favre was doing his retirement dance every year and the Packers (reasonably) believed he was actually going to go. I'm sure they never imagined they were going to have to push him out the door.

Not Dungy's worst idea.

Which was suggesting Jim Caldwell as the head coach in waiting.

In my opinion we need to know more about Peyton's health before and a better idea of where we will end up in the draft order. But I will say, if 18 is healthy, then auction off the pick to the highest bidder and use those picks to help the team during Manning's final years. If he's not then you simply draft Luck, unless there is another QB you like just as good, and then you auction the picks off and select/sign/trade for the qb of your choice and go from there.

very crazy idea

Luck is good without a doubt and I like luck (look at avi) but Dungy is proposing this idea in the sense that Manning will not return at his old form or making it sound like Manning is 45.

He is still an elite QB and still has a lot of football left in him. He just came off his best year in completions, passing yards etc. and will still play better than Luck.

The colts will not trade manning, though they would get some good picks from it, they would still have to pay him... it would be weird to see the colts paying a player whos not on their team anymore and he's beating them everytime they play him lol...

draft luck and use our high 2nd and 3rd round draft picks on some right away talent and also think about trading freeney or mathis and grabbing another draft pick and we good for the next years with manning and we have our next gen qb with luck and also who knows....if peyton gets injured we have luck so we are good...u dont pass up on a elite qb under any cirrcumstances

Im close to agreeing with you except for the fact that we dont have anybody in the front office or on the coaching staff that can build a good team. They have proved themselves to stink at building or coaching anything. it would pain me deeply to see Manning go.

The Colts are a long way from the final draft order and they would be fools to confirm or deny any roster moves regardless of how crazy they are. The more speculation, the better... it strengthens their hand. To me, Dungy is just getting the ball rolling. So let the speculation frenzy flourish, the Colts will only benefit from it.

For all the Luck posts i've made. I guess i can see why you don't want us to take him. It just seems so sad and wrong to trade Manning though for all he's done for the Colts... But if they did trade him, hopefully it would be to a Superbowl contender to get at least another ring... So lets say this dream scenerio exists Jason.. I'd like to see what you'd say.

1) we do trade the Luck pick for veterans, (maybe like for an entire defensive line of veterns with no superbowl rings yet) and a really good shot at one more superbowl lets say for next year or the year after.

or

2) we clean house and rebuild, hoping to stay dominate for the next 10 years around Luck.

Does anybody remember what Manning said when he discussed his selection in the 1998 draft with Jim Irsay? "I would like to play for you but if you don't pick me, I will kick your butt for the next 15 years." I say we hold him to that which means that Peyton's time with us should end around 2013.

Taking Luck makes a lot of sense to me now as it would allow just enough time to groom him to start kicking butt when Peyton leaves.

If the Colts draft Luck, they are not drafting him for season 2012- 14...they are drafting him for seasons 2014-24; knowing that once Peyton is back, they will go back to drafting at the end of the round and won't have a chance of getting this type of "prospect".

Why is this concept so hard for some to understand??

I want everyone to close their eyes and imagine Peyton Manning wearing a Houston uniform and "kicking our butts" for the next 3-4 years. Suicide rates would skyrocket, as the pain would be unbearable. Imagine Irsay trying to explain that?

Whether or not we should take Luck, or whether we'll even be afforded this opportunity, we simply cannot let him go until he is ready to go.

I don't know what you are sooo concerned about, there is no chance that the Colts become like the Dolphins and Broncos and are waiting over a decade for their next QB because nowadays, there are franchise QB's all over the place.

In fact, just the other weekend, I was in my yard plucking franchise QB's off my trees...there were too many to count...I gave a basket full to my neighbor to make a pie

Wow. I really don't understand why anyone would want to trade Manning so we could draft more "prospects" to rebuild. The draft is such a crap shoot. If you got rid of Manning, Freeney, Mathis, and Wayne, you are setting the franchise back years. There is no way we can replace that type of talent in one draft, so it will take us years to rebuild. In the meantime, Luck would be standing behind a pretty awful offensive line, which he's not accustomed to and can be devastating for young QBs.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Manning is winning Super Bowl rings for the New York Jets.

Did he really say that? That has got to be one of the stupidest things I have ever read if so. I'm really disappointed in Tony Dungy... he needs to stay out of the media like that from now on.

I agree. It really ticked me off when I heard it. Wish he'd keep his mouth shut.

#1 overall draft picks don't get drafted to sit on the bench for 3-4 years. Why is THAT concept so hard for some to understand?

In case anyone misunderstood my original post, I do NOT want Manning to be released or traded unless Luck is drafted....and I don't want Luck to be drafted. If they do draft Luck though, that is, imo, a clear indication that they're ready to rebuild. if they are truly committed to helping Manning and the other core vets on the team win now and try to win another ring or 2 before all is said and done, then they won't waste the #1 overall pick on a player who won't see the field until these guys are retired. IF they draft Luck, then go into rebuilding now. Basically do what the Bengals have been doing...bring in young talent that will grow and learn with your young QB.

I will make a prediction though...not whether or not the Colts will draft Luck because I don't know...I have my hunch as to what they'll do but that's just my hunch and isn't relevant. My prediction is that if the Colts DO draft Luck then either he or Manning will be gone before the 2013 season.
