They tried Link over him to start the game, he wasn't any better.  I think the sad truth is as much as fans don't want to admit it is that we don't have a better option at the moment.  It's clear the Colts aren't afraid to try one if it's there.  I think Thornton is going to be that guy in time but I wouldn't expect him to walk in and be the "answer" right away especially with him missing all of camp.  I know people want the line fixed this year but it's not going to happen.  Grigson elected to take a long term approach to fixing the line doing it with younger guys who can grow and develop together.  What we are looking for this year is progress.

Dude is horrendous. There HAS to be somebody on the free agent market.

Brain Waters is still available right?

Yes, he is. He said if the situation is right, he will play.

We may need a 1 year stop gap option with Brian Waters or maybe Leonard Davis???

Maybe I am wrong but I thought that guy Cleary held his own. Anyone else felt that way?

Not really, I thought he did alright against the Giants back ups and third stringers.  He would have to step up his game in a big way to be able to handle starters at the NFL level.  Frankly the best bet to replace McGlynn at this point is Thornton and that's probably going to take a little time not only to get him healthy but to get him up to NFL speed.

Yeah. I was watching Cleary.  He looked solid.

I know we don't see what the coaches see, but it is odd to understand why McGlynn is a starter.  And Ijalana barely gets to play.  I know they play different positions.  But just odd.

Unfortunately, Ijalana is basically a rookie....he could look awful for all we know. God, I hope someone steps up.

All I know is Chapman takes up 2 blockers whenever he's in the gm and the starting NT got pancaked bad on a run by Wilson to start tge gm. TY consistently outplays every WR, but cant even be recognized as the #2 wr. For whatever reason, it's a few positions where the best man is on the bench.

I would have thought they'd have replaced him by now, also.  Can Reitz play on the other side?  He wouldn't be worse.

I'm worried about Center (Satele) also.  They should have kept Shipley.

I think the Tackles are adequate and D. Thomas has done ok.  The weakest part of the line is in the middle/right

I think they are still bringing Chap along slowly, this was only his second ever game.  You have to understand the concept of the receiver position. TY should never be considered a number 2, even if he becomes the greatest receiver of the planet, he is best utilized against mismatches.  If he goes outside the mismatch will follow him, or DHB and Wayne can reak havoc in the slot if they move to cover Hilton with proper coverage.  You don't just put Hilton as a number 2 because he is better than DHB, which I believe he is.  The number you put on the WR doesn't mean anything if you move guys around like the Colts do these days.

Maybe Linkenbach gave him a copy.

In all seriousness, McGlynn was terrible today.

I'm hoping Thornton gets healthy enough to at least play a little before the season starts.  Heck, maybe even Holmes would be an upgrade at guard right now.  The good news is the rest of the line looks solid, if we can fix the RG spot, and eventually the C spot, this line does have alot of upside.

TY Hilton has potential to be a #1 wr. With his speed alone, he can be just as good if not better than Mike Wallace. Basically if this organization doesnt view him as a potential dominant WR, another team will and pay him accordingly. With the rules now, every db on him is a mismatch. You cant touch him.

Whenever there is only 2wrs on the field, TY should be one of the 2 wrs.

You are not understanding the concept of #1 WR vs. a 2 or 3 so I'm not going to argue with you...And no Mike Wallace is not a number one, and don't let the Dolphins convince you otherwise.

Dude, I understand the concept very well. And I'm sure TY and his agent understands the concept.

The point was, another team will view TY as a number 1 or 2, and will pay him like one Might as well treat him like he deserves. He is becoming too productive to just be considered some x factor.

Explain to me then what constitutes a number 1.  Most receptions? Lines up on the outside? Gets his name at top of depth chart?  On the field for most snaps? What is it?

Pep Hamilton seems to want to run 2 wr/2 te sets. Whenever they're 2 wrs on the field, TY Hilton should be the 2nd wr. Not difficult. The gameplan every wk should be to get the ball into TY's hands as much, if not more than Reggie. DHB should be the specialist/Reggie's backup. He cant play tge slot, but do sone gadget things with him. WR screens, the occasional deep ball. Whatever.

But calling him a number 3 does not mean he won't be on the field more that the number 2.  That's not how it works.  It's all how the coaches manage the rotation and what the play selection is.

To me, it's the guy at the top of the depth chart, who leads his team in production, and who can be counted on to make big plays at important spots in the game. The opposing defense treats him like the biggest receiving threat in the game, and he still consistently produces. Because of his dependability, he's likely to have more snaps than any other receiver, and probably more targets.

I don't care where he lines up; today's offenses usually move receivers around anyways, inside and outside, left and right. And I don't really care about his size or speed. He produces, plain and simple.

It's a little trickier when you're talking about a #2 or #3 guy, because usually those guys are different receivers entirely, and they play different roles on the team. Again, it's not really about where they line up; Welker is a slot guy, but he was obviously the #2 guy for the Pats when Moss was there.

As it pertains to Hilton, so far, he looks a lot more like Marvin Harrison than a guy who would be pigeon-holed as a slot receiver. His size is a limitation, but he still gets behind defenders and makes plays, and he has great footwork along the sideline. Hands are improving as well, and if he continues to trend upward, he is going to demand more and more attention from defenses. He isn't your prototypical #1 receiver, and I'm not saying he'll ever be considered that. But if he produces, and if he continues to show his versatility in a pro offense, then it will be increasingly silly to continue to try to view his role through some narrow lens.

I'd agree with the idea we need to get the ball into TY hand's as much as we can however, we saw tonight why he goes to the slot when DHB is in the game.  DHB is simply bigger while Hilton in the slot often get's either a third corner match up or a safety and with his speed he can blow by them and sets you up for a chance at a big play.  People get too wrapped up in the idea that if a guy is in the slot he's the third option on the play.  That's not always the case.  Often times it's because you get a better match up there.  Having DHB on the outside let's us move Hilton to the slot to take advantage of those match ups when we get them.  I would like to see more of Hilton in the two WR set but I haven't seen anything from DHB to suggest he's a problem out there.  He caught four passes tonight and was productive while doing it.  No he didn't have the big home run play like Hilton did but he wasn't bad either.

Witty. Keep up the good work.

Witty, no bro.  Your doing a fine job of that.  Matter of fact your above comments are down right hilarious.  Your really good at this comedy thing, seems like you got coaching under wraps too.  Good job!  SMH

This is a great post.

And I'd bet TY wants that recognition from the team as well. He has to be wondering what more he has to do. People act as if he can't play outside, but that where he's doing most of his damagae so far. He's at least a better version of Santana Moss or Lee Evans. Hopefully he keepa getting better

Absolutely brilliant...almost word for word my exact view on the subject.  I'm not arguing if Hilton is worthy on number 2 status or even number one, I'm saying any team in the league would use him all over the field because that is the player he is.  And it's not all over the field in terms of where he lines up but where he can take advantage of the coverage teams use on him.  No team will be able to put their best corner on Hilton, because if they do, DHB and Wayne will have a field day.

I love the 3wr sets with him im the slot. I have no issue with that. Also think TY can go outside and Reggie inside in that formation. Especially with Allen out. But again, if they're in a 2 wr formation, imo TY should be the 2nd wr.

Based on what I've seen in two pre-season games I think we'll see a little of both TY and DHB on the outside in two WR sets as the season goes along.  Pep doesn't look like a guy who is afraid to try different looks to confuse a defense.  Heck we might even get some plays with TY and DHB out there together in two wide sets just to give the defense a different look.

Then why give them numbers? If #3 comes before #2 in terms of impact, then what are we doing?

It is mostly about the coaches managing the rotation and calling plays, but I don't think the coaches label their receivers by numbers in this manner. It just doesn't make sense.

If you want to label them, call DHB the X receiver. That's his role, and that's about all he's really capable of, I think. Reggie would be the Z, the possession guy, with high target numbers, who rarely leaves the field. I think we're going to use Hilton in both of those roles, plus he'll be the primary guy getting slot work (although I could see us using DHB and Hilton on the outside, with Reggie in the slot).

But it doesn't really make sense to label them #1, #2, and #3 if those numbers aren't really related to what's happening on the field.

Ty, as good as he is, won't be the nightmare he is now to teams if we didn't have wayne and dhb to worry about.  They can't double him, or they will pay for it on the other side.  Once people start paying real attention to Hilton, the rest of our weapons will reap the benefits.

    • Fries has proven to be a diamond find.  Figure our salary cap will determine how our OL future pans out. Starting WRs are some of the best in the league.  Can AR connect with them like Menshew done?    TE room wouldn’t mind adding Fannin but team needs devalue him as BPA.  Conyers is great in run blocking and can catch hoping falls to R4-6 range.    DL help is a major area of need agreed.  Think I had a Day 3 initial grade on NT Rene Konga but each week he has impressed.  Between Konga and Michigan’s Benny probably our two best choices for Stewart’s role.  See my recent Week 4 top 10-15 players posted especially for LB and DB options.
