What the Colts did Right

The Colts looked great. They only had 21 minutes of time of possession, compared to the Bucs' 39 minutes. Curts Painter looked good and bad, but mostly good. He made some really nice passes, and some them were just flat out drops by the receivers. He also played with a banged up O-line, that throughout the game had starters Anthony Castonzo and Jeff Linkenbach suffering injuries, and even backup Ben Ijalana missed some time. They constantly pressured Curtis Painter, and although Curtis was bad against the blitz, he made some good throws will under pressure. Pierre Garcon had a huge game, getting an 87 yard touchdown and a 59 yard touchdown... his only 2 catches of the game. The running game was good early, but it slowly deteriorated as the game went on. On defense, the run defense was good early, but it just became worse and worse as the game went on. LaGarrette Blount really beat us in the 4th quarter, getting around 50 yards in the 4th alone. That's what cost us the game. Josh Freeman also had a good game, but he didn't have to work that hard. A lot of his passes were short passes to Earnest Graham and Kellen Winslow. They also beat us on the deep passes, most of them going to Preston Parker and Mike Williams, and one big pass to Arrelious Benn. It really needs to improve and the tackling was awful. The tackling needs to improve because bad tackling was the difference between 1st downs and the opposing team punting. Like last week, we had this game won. Some of the players that did well were Pat Angerer, Phillip Wheeler, Antoine Bethea, and Robert Mathis and Kavell Conner.

What the the Colts did Wrong

The Colts did a lot of things wrong. Pierre Garcon was too inconsistent, but I can't rip on him too much. Curtis Painter made some bad throws, but I can't rip on him either. The real problem was the O-line. Adrian Clayborn and Gerald McCoy, and you know what, even Michael Bennett constantly got good pressure on us, and that's a problem going into next week against Tamba Hali. The offense was much better than the defense. The run defense was bad, good in the first, but bad in the 2nd 3rd and 4th quarter. The pass defense was horrible throughout the game. They constantly beat us on every type of pass, the short, medium and long one. The tackling is one of the big reasons they beat us, and it's annoying to know that we could have won had we made some better tackles. Dwight Freeney had an off-game, but still provided good pressure on some plays. The thing is that they need to play Freeney (and Mathis) more. They were taken out so much, and it's very annoying because we could have provided great pressure on Freeman on some of the 1st downs, and it would have caused Freeman to screw up. Good on offense, bad on defense. Terrence Johnson had a good and bad game, but he messed up on some coverages. They did get double the amount of time the Colts got, so just think if we got 5 more minutes, we could have won, but they were able to get good drives against us, and the Colts had a bunch of 3 and outs, and that cost us the game.

Did anyone see Jerry Hughes, finally show the potential he has last night on that sack, The rule is it usually takes about 2 years for pass rushers to trun into great players in the future. Here's to hoping he continues on this pace in the future.

Thanks,

I strongly disagree about Conner. He was responsible for the B gap that Blount burst through, the turning point of that game. There were many other times I saw him get yanked. Included another key error, the bootleg on 3rd and short that TB ran with their back-up QB (name?). Although, on that play, Bethea should've been up in the box but we were playing it safe, again. Thats more the play call than the player though.

Even Wheeler was good last night. Connor was a weak link.

Hughes urinated all over anything good he did there by losing his cool and engaging in a fight. If Anderson wasn't on the other side of the field fighting like a dummy, the refs prolly would've called Hughes for his swipe.

That kid screws up when he does good.

Colts recap week 4:

Painter held his own most of the game and had 2 terriffic passes for touchdowns......

Offense played pretty well most of the night

Defense played according to what was called......unfortunately the play calling for the defense was so sad.....

Hey Angerer....as soon as the ball snaps.....run down the field 20 yards and leave the middle wide open for the bucs to dump a 7-8 yard pass right down the middle where you used to be...

Absolutely Ridiculous........again and again and again.......

Oh and corners...just to give the bucs as much advantage as we can......lay off about 8-10 yards.....we wouldnt want to intimidate anyone.....

The defensive play calling absolutely sucked.

    • I like Latu, but don't you think there's a significant number of teams that are scared off by his medical? And then a couple more who will downgrade him because of his age?
    • yeah pretty much what I figured.  If they are going to start mixing up coverages and running more man coverage, then sure grab a CB in the first.  If they're going to continue being a mostly zone team regardless, then no, no round 1 CB.
    • The mission is to build something that has us competing with the best of the best. This is a season for AR to get tuned up.  Who do you think will be the right guys on our roster now to take us to an AFC Championship game?  It's not Smith, Fries, and we likely can't get there with more than 2-3 of our current back seven.  I would offer Buckner to the Bears as part of a trade for 9. Eberflus wants to have a great D so maybe he bites.  Then hopefully trade back 2-3 spots for a good pick.  I'd love to come out of the draft with Latham and the Dline guy.
    • I think he's a little overrated as a corner prospect. Doesn't mean I don't like him, I do. But I was hearing about how incredibly athletic he is, people were talking about him like he was a lockdown defender, then I watch him for a couple games and I don't see that. So at first I was pretty down on him. Then I went back and watched him with my expectations much lower, and I see what he has to offer.   He's definitely athletic, but not the standout, premier athlete people were making him out to be at first. Watching his high school basketball videos helped me contextualize his athleticism, there's plenty of burst there. He has some struggles flipping his hips and staying connected late in the down. He's feisty and physical, plays the run with enthusiasm, tackles well, and he has explosiveness. He's better in shorter areas when he doesn't have to try to keep up with a receiver with elite speed. I know he ran 4.43, but it wasn't a pro day, it was a private workout. I discount timed speeds at pro days, and definitely at private workouts. To me, he's closer to 4.5 than 4.4, and that's what I expected when watching him play.   To me, he's a safety/nickel prospect, not a boundary corner. And if he were looked at as a boundary corner, I think his arm length would probably disqualify him for the Colts, at least in the first round. And I think the Colts already view corner as a Day 2 position. He's said all the right things about playing multiple positions. And while I don't know how the new rules will affect kickoffs, I think it makes sense to have good options at returner, so that helps his stock as well. But I think the second round is the right range for him. If we drafted him, I think we still need a boost on the outside.
    • Personally….  I’m hoping and praying you’re wrong.   I don’t even think Murphy is a Ballard type of player. He’s not tall or long or rangy or athletic.   He’s a 6’1” 300 pound ball of muscle.   I’m not saying he’s not a good player, he is.   But CB has never drafted or signed a player with that body type or athletic background.      Is it possible the Colts draft Murphy?   Yes.  I’m just hoping it doesn’t happen.   I’d be scratching my head forever.   Just my two cents.
