Phil B Says Sheppard Starts If Angerer Unhealthy. Plus Other Thoughts

I think this is kind of misleading... like talking about DHB and T.Y. being #2 and #3 receivers... Conner is a run stopping specialist and Sheppard excels in coverage... they will both see significant playing time depending on the package, down & distance, ect...

I like Conner and would assume that he would be considered the "starter" because he will be in on a lot of early downs, but what do I know?. I thought it would be Freeman and Conner starting with Angerer backing up Freeman and Sheppard subbing for Conner...

It's interesting to me because when Angerer was unhealthy last year Conner started. Fokou never started overConner. Now the guy that is essentially supposed to play Fokous role will possibly be starting over Conner. Still I do somewhat agree with Gavin though. All of them will see playing time.

Im  thinking it wont matter who is the starter and who isn't, the first 3-4 ILB's that make the team will see playing time

Right, the front seven is so specialized based on down and distance that it really doesn't matter who starts. You just want to make sure those guys can play when they're locked in while a team goes to a hurry up, like Peyton was so good at doing.

Our starting CBs and Safeties hardly ever leave the field, starters matter a lot more there.

My favorite part of the article is right here:

"Franklin will start camp as a backup, but his experience suggests you can count on seeing him in the defensive-line rotation. And that’s key. It’s not who starts, but who’s in the rotation. If you don’t make the rotation, you’re not doing anything but playing special teams and are expendable when it comes time to shave the roster in late August."

Bingo! This is one of the reasons that I revere Giants GM Jerry Reese so much...He understands the significance of a quality rotation lineup on both sides of the ball & our own Grigs grasps this vital line of thinking too.

Thanks Krunk for posting this story.

No, I thought the starters were Angerer and Connor to begin with until Angerer got injured and Freeman took over. I could easily be wrong about that though.

In the pre-season the starters were Connor and Angerer, but I'm speaking more along the lines of how things were during the regular season. When Angerer came back, Freeman remained a starter and initially Angerer was the other starter. Angerer still was not all the way healthy so he and Connor kind of did double duty. In 2013 we still have a situation where Angerer is not healthy, but this time(at least according to Phil B) it is assumed that Connor will not be starting and Sheppard will be in his place. Under this scenario I think it is interesting because if Fokou was still here he would not be starting in place of Connor. But now we have a player (Sheppard) who is playing the same role as Fokou but he is in line to start over Connor. I wonder what changed, or am I reading to much into it.

Sheppard is  better in dropping back in a short zone then Conner is, Some way overrate how good he is (isn't) against the run

No that's a great point, but I guess I wasn't convinced that healthy of not Angerer would start over Conner, and this guy only thinks Shepard will start if Angerer is injured, so what if Angerer wasn't even projected to be the starter by the Colts to begin with? Afterall I feel like due to camp assessment a lot of people were doubting if Angerer was really a fit for the 3-4 anyways. It's like he just left Conner out the question completely, he's not even mentioned.

I think Conner should start over Angerer and Sheppard, he's one of the most physical run stopping ILB's in the NFL. He reminds me of Navarro Bowman as far as body type and speed. Not many people knew who Bowman was until the 49ers put a better d-line in front of him. With Redding,Chapman, Francois, and Hughes in front of him wouldn't surprise me at all if Conner lead the team in tackles.

Eh, the situation will straighten itself out in camp and pre-season one way or another. As long as the level of play is acceptable, I'm not terribly concerned with who wins the job. We have plenty of competent talent at the position even if we don't have perennial All-Pros.

Now, the offensive line on the other hand....I really would like nothing more than for McGlynn to get beat out by Thornton unless McGlynn's somehow thrice the player he was last year. And I wouldn't be too heartbroken (sarcasm) if Holmes beat out Satele.

Yes. Free practice on Wednesday for those in the area. This will hopefully end the "where is LaRon Landry" discussions.

Just look for the Hulk in the secondary!! Will be good to see him out there with the team. Chemistry is huge. I don't think he'll have a problem coming in and binding with the team.
