Can We Talk Next Draft Without Luck?

Recommended Posts

Why do you think we would take an OT? We just took two with our first two picks this year. Castonzo is doing just fine at left tackle and Ijalana is being developed at right tackle. We aren't moving him to guard, Polian said that himself in training camp and he's never played guard. We have both of our tackles for the future.

I think we go one of five areas in round one in the next draft.

DT: I think is honestly the least likely because I like Nevis and Johnson and I think the two of them can be a good starting pair in the NFL. I think we could use another DT for depth but again like I said the other night if a Warren Sapp is looking us in teh fact I am not going to say we should pass on him.

WR: Reggie Wayne is probably in his last two to three years here if we are lucky. No one else we have on the roster is a number one level WR. We need some help there and you can get a pretty good WR with a top 10 pick.

CB: Honestly I think this is the biggest level of need going into the draft short of OG but you rarely see a guard taken in round one. A top 10 corner should be a big play making corner to be our number one guy for the next 10 years. That let's us move Powers to number two and let Johnson and Lacey play number the nickle spot which is where they should be. All of the sudden our corner issues are fixed.

QB: I would agree I don't think this is likely. However, Polian mentioned on his radio show earlier this year that when him and Peyton harmed out this contract he told Peyton it was time to start looking at QBs in the draft like they could be a starter. He said they started looking at QBs like that in the past draft but no one they liked slide to them. So if we are in poistion and a QB is there I am not going to be shocked if we take him. I am not saying I would agree with it I am just saying I wouldn't be shocked. There is a good chance we wont be in poistion like this to get a QB this high till after Manning is retired so I could see the case for us taking one. Personally I would use it on one of the other three spots to give us what we need to help Manning win the rest of his career here.

C: After thinking about the o-line I think we are one starter short on the inside. I was thinking guard but we could take a center in round one to give us a LT, RT, and C to build the line around for the next 10 years. That's how we built the line the first time under Polian and it produced very good results. We could then address the right guard spot by putting Pollack there where he isn't horriable, he's not great but he's not horriable either.

We definitely have got to get a center, but it'd be in the second round. Both of the two top center's are projected in the middle of the 2nd round.

You win games in the trenches, unless you have a Manning, Brady, Rodgers, or Brees. If Indy were dominant on the OL and DL Manning would going for his 5th or 6th ring by now.

A team CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH LINEMEN. What if Peyton had an O line that was capable of producing on the ground "in a dominant manor?" This team would be unstoppable.

And also.. Manning has proven he can turn journeymen skill position players into "all pro" types.

If Indy had a run the ball, and stop the run attitude currently they would be a lot better off with out Manning.

pointless, peyton is gonna be 37 coming off neck surgery to repair nerve cells. whether peyton plays well coming back is irrelevant because peyton is only gonna be around at most 4 years. we have a golden opportunity to solidify our franchise's success for the next 15 years if we get luck. i dont understand why everyone wants to just give peyton weapons just so we can have success for just 4 years. we get luck we have the QB of the future for our franchise. we get peyton weapons and we're putting ourselves in a hole once hes gone. sure we can draft a QB later, but when is there ever gonna be someone like andrew luck again.

Quoted for truth. If we are in the great fortune of getting a shot a Luck we take him. If Polian was to pass on that chance I would escort him out of Indy myself.

We need a Wr or a shutdown corner for defense. After that continue to rebuild our pass rusher with DE's and Dt's. We're better off that way. There isn't going to be another Peyton Manning even if Luck comes close. Peyton is going to be the great to ever play the game. No one can pick up a defense or play at a level like he can unless he teaches them.

Ok, so would you rather have an elite, top 5 QB for the next 15 years, or struggle and go only as far as a mediocre QB may take us?

Doesn't matter what we do with our team if we have a mark sanchez-esque QB failing under center.

There have been a lot of great to even elite QB's that were not taken #1 overall. There is no reason to think we can't take another, less polished QB in the later first or early second round and let Peyton and the QB coaches develop and polish him up.

you sir are nuts if you think curtis painter is our next qb

I don't expect him to be our next QB simply because if he shows starters talent he will be traded - you don't sit a starter behind Peyton until he is almost 30 years old. A more reasonable expectation is that he proves he can be a solid backup.

But don't dismiss Painter. He was considered a possible first rounder when he was in college - it was just conjectured that he would need a lot of time to develop - which is exactly what hes been doing for the past three years. He's got tons of talent, he just drives people nuts with the mistakes. I would expect the mistakes to be reduced the more he plays. You may be surprised.

If we have the chance to take a potential franchise QB who fits our system you take him. It's ridiculous to assume that you know who that QB might be better than Polian. If they pass on Luck, it will be with good reason.

It is my hope that we look to free-agency to fix our O-line next year, instead of the draft. Protect Manning now with known quantities that don't need "time". That would free up our top picks for other necessities, like, defense and WR.

Yeah man, I definitely want to see us do whatever it takes to give Manning the best possible team around him to give us a shot at winning some more Lombardi Trophies!

Couldn't agree more!

I keep daydreaming that we will get the #1 pick and that the Browns will be interested in getting Luck, and trade us their two 1st round picks (hopefully plus another mid-round pick) for him.

Personally IMO, I think the Browns like what they have in McCoy, acquiring their picks would be great, but McCoy has worked hard and improved this year. However with this said, we could trade the pick for Luck to San Francisco, since they will definitely be wanting a QB and since Harbaugh coached Luck at Stanford. We'd get their 1st round pick, and also 2nd, which should be somewhere around mid-round picks, plus I'm sure at least a few other picks or players.

That seems very very realistic, realistically I don't know what players we would/could get, Willis would be the Ultimate, then on defense either Whitner SS, or Justin Smith DT.. on offense maybe Crabtree or the OG they drafted two years ago, he is Hawaiian I think?

You obviously want a revamped and well built O-Line, the key is gonna be how Ijalana develops. I think its ironic how this years draft has more O-Line talent coming out then last years, just from first glance (I could be wrong), and last year had more D-Line talent and the Colts took O-Line, cause they took Huges instead of Saffold two years ago. Interesting how that worked out...

Colts just need a smart fella with great accuracy and awareness in the pocket. They don't need some ridiculous mobile guy who can throw it 70 + yards. A guy with the aforementioned attributes being groomed by Manning will do. Preferably a taller guy who has a good field of view. I'm not sure who fits those attributes the most.

I'm with you...this draft talk after 3 games is nonsense...

We're just dreamin, man! Gotta do something to take the mind off of the sucky situation here! Besides, it's good to dream about what positions we're gonna shore up for when Manning gets back. Gives us something to look forward to. It's been over a decade since we got good draft position so at least there's a little light at the end of the tunnel. You don't like it, go to one of the "BP SUCKS" threads. I was just trying to stay positive amidst the fray.

Riff- I was the one saying that we should take Kalil and how the one pick would address three positions and really solve the offensive line woe’s and you agreed with me.

Mightisright- There are several threads where we were talking about all the possible draft scenarios already. I think for you to think the Colt’s may not get

the first pick is very unrealistic of you. I am not sure what would make you think otherwise, but the Colts do not look great offensively and defensively, and don’t think because the run d was vastly improved against the Steelers, that all of a sudden the Colts run d is legit. Steelers were on serious reserves for their line and the Colts had and still have their backs against the wall, so they wanted to prove it’s not the Peyton Manning Colts as ESPN has been saying all week! With this said as Colts fans we should want the first pick, it is either going to bring the drafting of Luck (which I personally do not want) or the trading down to acquire picks/players, which I am really hoping for. I think someone else could be selected later in the draft or next year’s draft to be groomed, why take the most anticipated QB out of college since Manning, to sit under him for hopefully4-5 years? Instead I would propose we use this to our advantage to stock pile picks and players, then we could draft players who could be instant contributors to the team!

As far as Colts needs: NT, CB, SS, LB, WR,

I proposed we trade down, acquire picks, take Kalil LT- USC, which would move Castanzo to RT giving the Colts their bookend tackles for years to come and also puts Ijalana in at RG, which most scouts thought he was better suited to play! Then we need to get impact players! CB- Alfonzo Denard Nebraska, LB- Manti’ Te’o Notre Dame, SS- Ray Ray Armstrong Florida, NT- Kawann Short Purdue. To get some of these players Denard/Manti’ Te’o may require trading back into the first round, but we should have the picks to do so!

There were several threads talking draft scenarios. They were just all about LUCK. I was bored with the Luck talk b/c I personally don't think we're that bad as to get the first round pick. Maybe we are, only time will tell. But I'm approaching it from the "what do we need to do to get Manning a few more trophies?" perspective NOT let's draft the QB of the future perspective and I didn't see any posts from that perspective. Moderators, feel free to merge if this is redundant!

One question: are we going to have much cap room next year? Can we get a good CB or SS on the market? A few o-linemen too since I'd prefer to see Peyton under center with an experience line!

Probably depends on things like who do we resign, do we cut guys like Bullitt and Brackett? Moves like that will set our cap space but with Wayne, Mathis, Saturday, Gonzo, Garcon, and Diem all free agents I would look for us to keep our own first starting with Wayne and Mathis.

Thanks! Then I think we cut Gonzo and Garcon and Diem. Keep Wayne, Mathis and Brackett. I know everybody's on the Angerer bandwagon but Bracket makes everybody better when he's on the field. He provides intelligence and leadership to our defense. Saturday, I'm thinking he might retire anyway. Get some Free agency O-line depth if we can afford it, draft some high CB, SS and WR picks.

We don't have to cut most of those guys, they will be free agents, we simply just don't resign them. I know we have more free agents than that as well. Garcon I am okay with bringing back since he'll probably be cheap. I do think job one is resigning Wayne and Mathis in that order. That will probably eat up any money we hadfor other big name free agents. I am okay with bringing Diem or Saturday back for a one year deal. I think they wil keep Bullitt if for no other reason than depth and special teams play. Brackett will be the interesting one. If they honestly think Angerer is the guy and they like Conner and Simms/Wheeler (although both are free agents at the end of the year I think) they might very well release Brackett. Gonzo I think is gone unless he just tears it up over the next few weeks and then he's probably gone because we wouldn't be able to afford him.

yeah, that's what i meant: not resigning them. My fear is that we'll lose simms/wheeler/conner b/c we never seem to be able to retain O-line or D-line guys if they're any good when they go into free agency. Saturday I think we should bring back for one more year. But it seems like we have a lot of free agents and not a whole lotta mulah. Any cap experts wanna weigh in?

Conner is only a second year player so I am sure he has a few more years left on that contract. Saturday I can see going either way. It will probably depend a lot on what the Colts feel about Pollack if they think he can be our center of the future they might very well let Jeff walk.

Wayne and Mathis are the big guys we can only tag one (my guess is Reggie) and we could very well lose the other to free agency and if we do that will probably free up money. Like I said it's kinda early to make this guess. One thing I know about Polian is that no one is better at working the cap in the NFL. If he wants a guy he knows what moves to make to either keep that guy or when the price is just too much and who to cut to keep us from being in Sallary cap heck with a tone of dead money.

We can't afford to lose Wayne, we don't have ANY depth at his talent level. But I do think we have some guys that could step into Mathis's shoes. It'll be tough, the man is a beast. But hopefully we can draft another big great WR to complement Wayne in the future if we franchise him next yeart. Looking forward to the first good picks in a decade!

That's exactly why I think Wayne is the one that gets the tag and why I said Wayne is the first guy we have to resign. It also fits how the Colts do business. Offense first at the expense of the defense. I'd hate to see Mathis get away but if we have to pick between the two Reggie is the guy. Also, I think Mathis is a very good player without question but he also benefits playing on the other side of Freeney. I would like to see the Colts give Hughes a few reps on the otherside of Freeney and see if that helps him at all.

Can't hurt to move Hughes there. We're really in a unique position of being able to evaluate some of the young guys and see if they step up. It's not like we have anything to lose at this point! I think we should be playing more of our young guys in the next games, esp if we lose this game Monday night. If we have no shot at the playoffs, treat it like the preseason and develop our younger guys, evaluate them for next year. That way we know exactly what we've got going into the off season and where we need to shore up with the draft and the FA.

and just to be clear I am not saying bench Mathis or anything like that. I just know we rest him and Mathis at times during the game I would like to see them make it a point to get Hughes some reps on the other side of Freeney just to see if he can play at all.

I got you! Benching Mathis would be moronic. Kinda like the way they kept trying to do that crossover 4step move with him where he had to angle out and around the line to get to the Big Ben on Sunday. :) I'm not a football expert by any stretch. What was that thing, and why did they keep trying it when it looked *ic?

Mightisright- I apologize if I came off strong, I am glad you started the topic with no Luck in mind! I have been in tons of other threads saying why we shouldn’t go that direction, and how we should use his name to trade down and better our team! I didn’t mean to be a Debbie downer saying the Colts will get first pick, but it is a VERY realistic possibility. My bad if I came off strong, hard to tell tone and intentions over font. :)

You didn't come off too strong. I'm glad we're all passionate about our Colts here! No worries! :) It's a very hard thing, to hope that your team loses that much! I think it's a possibility, I just think we'll only get better. I'm not like most, I don't think the wheels are gonna fall off the bus. I think our D will step up again and our offense will continue to improve. But yeah, I think we're in a 5-10 spot, being generous. I can understand after going 0-3 why you'd think that we could get the number one pick. Only time will tell!

To add, if Mathis is not re-signed, then we still have veteran leadership on the DL with at least Freeney. If we lose Wayne, there really wouldn't be a veteran leader...someone to help mold the younger guys and teach them the finer points of the game. Yeah that's what coaches are for but it's also nice to have someone who's been there, done that and can still do it to help the young guys out. :)

Also, DE is one of the areas we have the most depth. We do need to figure out exactly what we have in Hughes. Plus there's Anderson and Brayton. I think Anderson gets re-signed, not sure about Brayton. If we draft DT then Foster may become expendable...he could be moved to DE or be released.

I think we need an impact player at both positions, that doesn’t mean it needs to be the over paid players of the world like this past offseason ale Eric Weddle, who was very overpaid. We need an impact SS who has coverage abilities but really is better known for being a box safety and puts the wood in people, I am talking a Laron Landry type, think the Colts missed out on Whitner and Mikel! And a physical tackling corner who can run support as well would be ideal!

Typically when you mention a free agent acquisition, at least I found on the old forum, that it became a very critical issue, I was simply saying getting the right free agent doesn’t mean over paying for a person either.. but I am not sure about the cheap part, sometimes you get what you pay for. :P

    • Blankenship was consistent, the distance when it got to 49 and higher is what made us very very nervous. If nothing else, it upped the level of competition. I am all for this move.
    • Slot chain mover guy, that is what he was at Penn State, but the slot with speed is what K J Hamler brings to their squad, so he became expendable, ironically K J Hamler is also from Penn State. We use our WRs so interchangeably that I am not sure we really need him, to be honest. If I get him on waivers, yes, without losing a draft pick. If not, I wouldn't worry about it.
    • A lot of people seem to disagree with you, but depending upon how it plays out, you might be right.  If Wentz is playing well, the team is winning and he misses 3-4 games, you would probably rather have a vet.      If Wentz falls on his face, however, you might as well see what you have in Eason before drafting a QB.
    • I don't know that he will command Top 10 money by then.  And Ryan Kelly's compensation actually goes down each year going forward, it was a very front loaded contract by Ballard standards, if I read it correctly.  So the overall compensation given to the line will be top dollar when Nelson and Smith are extended, but I don't think that it will be outrageous.     But we will almost have to fund the RG position with a young player under a rookie contract, IMO.  Might find a replacement for Kelly at some point if he's dinged a lot or becomes too expensive.   If our pricey Olineman are both OTs and the LG, I think we'll be fine.  Might be able to afford a luxury at C if we're not paying WRs top dollar.  I think that's how the cap structure might work under a Reich O.
    • Did Blankenship actually win the kicking competition last year?  More than a few people seemed surprised he won the job.     For nearly 15 years prior to 2019, we never had to think about the kicker.  If Vinatieri ever missed one early, he almost always made up for it late in a clutch situation.  Of course he probably played a year too long in 2019.
