He got the same hype from fans and media like his teammate Jesse Williams and simply gms didn't agree:

@AlbertBreer: Did a little homework on the two Bama guys who fell. NT Jesse Williams, as it turns out, was simply overrated in the public eye. ...

Being on an extremely successful team like Alabama has a tendency to do that.

Injury and not a real mauler, nor extremely athletic and at times gets caught looking at the ball after he takes care of his initial target. Draft status doe not dictate how good of a career you will have and I expect he will be a good O Lineman for years to come however

I liked our draft....but whats crazy is I thought a good amt of folks would be for it as well I knew about EVERYONE we picked off the strength of this board alone....I was happy with Thorton, VERY HAPPY with Hughes and thought Boyett was a steal...I've seen him play and IMHO he was the toughest player on a very talented but finesse Oregon Def

But Jones was taken by St. Louis before our pick,  so we couldn't have taken him even if we wanted to.......

Wish we could know whether Holmes or B. Jones was higher on Grigson's board.  We'll never know, and it doesn't matter but I'm very curious.  I really wanted Jones, and I thought he might come off the board in the 3rd to us, but can see why Thornton got the nod upon further review.  Thornton looks like a tremendous talent.  Holmes looks like the more physically talented player, and he is given leadership credit like Jones - but I really really like Jones.  I am always humbled after the draft by how myopic my player views are without a professionals lens.

Honestly,   I don't think we had a choice....

If we didn't Thornton and hoped he would be there in the 4th,  he might've been picked by someone else.   And I don't think there was another guard in this draft who could step in and start as a rookie in a man blocking scheme.   Warford, Winter and Thornton were the last three.    After them,  anyone else would've been someone who needs a year or two to develop.

I suspect the same was true for Jones/Holmes....  if we didn't grab one of them in the 4th,  then whoever we'd take later would be a developmental player....

So,  we kinda went "all in" on those players and hope for the best....

he was better than Holmes.

While its easy to think that he was better because he was surrounded by other first round talent on the offensive line..........Holmes performed at a high level without other first round picks surrounding him.

Its the same principal as grading how poorly Satele (and our tackles, to be fair) played when thye had really $hitty guard play beside them.  Satele was a solid player elsewhere where they ran the ball consistently (Miami, Oakland) and tried to play thru injuries all last season.........so the talent is there.

Holmes was drafted in the 4th round and is 'capable' of playing both guard and center and as such I am 'optimistic' that he will replace McGlynn as the swing man in the middle and we keep both Satele AND Shipley for at least one more year to see how all the new parts fit together (Thomas, Cherilus, Thornton and Holmes) with the returning roster players!

he was better than Holmes.

I think that's debatable to say the least... I think Holmes has more upside with his extremely long arms (although they are basically the same size)... I like Holmes's leadership and intelligence ... He needs to gain more strength, but I think that will not be a problem...

The same things can be said about Jones, but many experts had Holmes ranked higher as a pure C.. especially in a zone scheme... Jones probably had the better guard potential in the eyes of the pundits, but it is definitely no slam dunk that he will be better in the NFL... Although he definitely had more media exposure on a championship caliber team...

I am optimistic about Holmes being Andrew Luck's C of the future... he looks, to me, to have the potential to be much better than Satele is or Shipley was... and will probably start by the end of the season given Satele's inability to stay on the field last year...

I'm happy with the Thornton/Holmes picks until I see otherwise...
