I woke up this morning just thinking about how fortunate we are as an organization.   I was too young to see John Unitas play, but he is what got me into liking the Colts by reading a book about him.  So to follow him up with Bert Jones is crazy!  I know younger fans may not knkow as much about Bert Jones, but going from Unitas to Bert Jones was not that much removed as Manning to Luck.  Jones was a VERY GOOD QB. NFL MVP.  What killed his career was injuries (he liked taking on defenders), and Robert Irsay dismantling a very young, talented team that Joe Thomas had built.  Had he stayed healthy with more stability, I believe he would be right there with the greats.

 

Anyways, we had a gap there for awhile, but then to come back with Peyton Manning and then followup with with Andrew Luck is just crazy good luck/stars lined up.   Enough has been said about them that I don't really need to add to it.

 

But it is not just QBs.  I know it has only been a year,  but to go from a Hall Of Fame talent evaluator like Bill Polian to Ryan Grigson, who looks like he could be one of the top guys in the league is such a luxury.  I think as a Colts fan we take that stuff for granted.  But look at a team like Dallas.  They had their run in the early 90s but since then, Jerry Jones destroys the team.  Look at Al Davis with his head scratching picks.  I love the first two picks we have gotten this year.   What jumps out at me is both guys have had to overcome great obstacles and have risen to the top of their game.  They both have a nasty streak to them. These appear to be the type of guys in want in a foxhole with you.

 

Lastly, what I find ironic is the connection between our quarterbacks.  Bert Jones was a friend of Archie Manning, Peytons dad.  As well as Oliver Luck, Andrews dad.  Not sure if there is a Unitas connection in there, but I find that interesting.

 

So it is very good to be a Colts fan :)

Bert Jones was "larger than life" to me as a kid. I got the full Colts uniform for Christmas one year with the #7 Jones, I lived in that thing! I`m 43 now and any mention of the Colts just gets me as excited as ever Very lucky indeed

I saw him play his first game in Cleveland. He was special.

That is very cool. I am about same age as you.  I remember watching Bert Jones and I was amazed at how he could will the Colts to win.  Roger Carr was my favorite WR.  And I loved the Sack Pack.

Yes, we have some great player stories - you are right.  We are lucky to have those memories.  However, we are even more fortunate to have the future we do....and that comes down to ownership.  We paid the price of the Sr. ultimately to reap the rewards of the Jr.

also cant forget " Jr " actually had the marbles to do the one thing that hundreds of colts fans were hoping he wouldnt do, and that was release peyton manning. even the so called " experts " were saying it could be a mistake they should have kept him and still drafted luck and then Luck comes in and leads us to a 11-5 record and a playoff spot. pretty much has us in position for a possible division championship in the 2013 season.

Well Jr was a part of the reason Indy paid the price.

 

I'm glad, as an owner, he is smart enough to let football minds do the work.

You can't talk about how lucky we are without mentioning Earl Morrall. This was well before my time, but he is truly one of the all time amazing stories in the NFL with us and Miami. We have been so lucky with qb's it is crazy. 4 mvp qbs not to mention Harbaugh and Luck who is sure to win one in his career. I love the Colts!

I too was a kid growning up on Bert Jones  & hey diddle diddle, Lydell (Mitchel) up the middle having lived in B'more.

 

I think a lot of fans that joined us during the Peyton years don't truly appreciate all the winning we've had of late. I mean all you had to do is be a fan in the 80s and early 90s or remember Jeff George and you'd really appreciate what we have now.

      Seems like this team gets a lot of untimely injuries that come out of nowhere. Smith and Kelly, Lewis injuries just appeared out of nowhere. None of those injuries were even mentioned after the Bears game.

      Yep. He must of woke up Thursday with it. I assume Pinter will play center if he can’t go. That tackle slot is worrisome if smith can’t go. The defense is looking ridiculously banged up.

      QB is hard.  It's easy to sit back and expect guys to look like Marino but every QB has a different ceiling and a different path to that ceiling.  And again getting there is a long and tough road and the toughness in that road includes everything from injuries to quality of the team around them.   Richardson still looks like the guy we saw on tape in college.  He is an elite run threat who can put the ball anywhere on the field, but his consistency in ball placement is not good.  I used to believe that can't be fixed.  Until Josh Allen.  Now these types of QBs are guys teams will take a flyer on, because of supply and demand, and the immense impact if you can hit on one of them.  But here we are and he's still the same QB, which is a bit of a concern to me at this point.   It's not like he doesn't still have time to get his game in order.  He does.  And even if he fails in Indy he'll have another chance with another team due to his talent level.  So it's still too early to get all crazy about where he's at.   For myself I'll say what I keep saying about him: he needs to learn to move the offense from the protection of the pocket.  That is how you have a long career and end up in the Hall with a million passing yards.  If he does not develop that part of his game the end result will be his teams will use his legs to move the offense and he'll get hurt and miss time and demonstrate why RBs have such a short shelf life.  So his career is in his hands.  He has to learn and do it or he'll suffer the results.
