So Mike Wallace has decided to return to the Steelers. He will not be playing in their final pre season game.

Please correct me if I am wrong here...

All Mike Wallace has to do to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season is play in 4 games this season.

Could Mike decide to play in the first 4 games then refuse to play the rest of the season and still become a free agent?

The pay he's receiving for this one year deal is well below what he should be getting based on his numbers. If he wants to be an unrestricted free agent and land a nice long term deal somewhere else playing 4 and then sitting might well be a good strategy for him.

I think the threshold is six games. And the Steelers can still tag him after this season.

Statistics prove that more than likely he's going to get hurt anyways. Skipping training camp is never a good thing for conditioning. Pulled hammys or cramping problems are usually an issue for holdouts. Revis comes to mind as a perfect example of this.
