Hooker was never a man-cover safety, but he was thought to have the "traits" to develop into one.

I think what you're talking about is covering the single high zone.  Its still a zone.  But playing lower towards the LOS and turning and running with a receiver in a zone is not really his thing, and that's how I would think of a cover safety in a zone scheme....IMO.

by coverage safety I’m speaking specifically as a zone coverage, not man coverage. So let me rephrase that he is the best Zone coverage safety that we have.

Geathers has already lost his starting job to Willis. I am ok keeping him as a backup. Desir has battled injuries all year.

I wouldn’t say lost he actually played a significant amount of snaps towards the latter of the season which was due to injury but they have sort of shared duties in the secondary. I’d prefer not to have Geathers back as a backup and let him walk.

While we are pointing out blame in covering, Hooker has looked like a hot piece of dog feces lately. Not sure what’s up with him. Is he hurt, lack of caring or the scheme is not allowing him to showcase his skill set. Something isn’t right with Hooker for sure.

our strong suit is our lb’ers now, and even then, it’s not like they are the dominant group in the league. Eberflus has to add more wrinkles into this defense than it’s vanilla shell we so frequently are seeing.  I do recall an article early in the year that quoted a few other “anonymous” GM’s  that said planning or playing against our defense was the most simplistic defense of the league. Or something like that. Eberflus either isn’t that creative or CB has him cornered down to certain parameters. Idk something must change next season for sure. Maybe with Turay and Houston on the field together and a better DT, the back end looks better. I’d just like to see more creative packaging from Eberflus than we’ve seen so far. Look at the Dallas team he was a part of, they have some wrinkles in their defense.

In my honest opinion Hooker isn’t being used appropriately. If you look at his better seasons when healthy he was used as a single high safety. That is honestly where he excels at, in a cover two scheme he just doesn’t play as well. I will say his tackling has improved which is vastly because he is now required to play in the box more than what he is used to.

Autry, Willis and Moore were out today. We have a very young defense. He is still safe. The secondary will look bad until we get a better dline.

We also need a second cover safety, Geathers is awful in coverage and a better corner to replace Desir it’s not just only on the defensive line.

Defense has been bad! Spent most of the draft on that side of the ball and it took a step back. The scheme sucks. We gave up big plays everywhere. Down the sideline, middle of the field, we never cover the back out the backfield. Blitzes were obvious and didn’t hit home often enough. A bunch of issues.

Either there is a disconnect with what is being taught or Eberflus is getting out coached. I know wasn’t a Reich guy. We made a lot of average QBs look great.

The Tampa 2 defense is a defense that is designed to play with a lead. Which is why it excelled in the Manning Era, because the Offense was so potent and could put up points. It’s not really a great defense playing from behind. I’m not a fan of the defense at all. And I don’t think we are properly utilizing are defenders to their full capabilities in a cover 2 scheme. I personally would prefer we played more of a style of defense that the Seahawks are known for. But we don’t have all the pieces of the puzzle to make that style of defense work.

I know I know Philip is 38 year old So it would only be for a year or two but Frank Reich was the Chargers quarterbacks coach in 2013 and offensive coordinator from 2014-2015. Colts OC Nick Sirianni was on the Chargers coaching staff for five seasons as the team’s offensive quality control coach (2013), quarterbacks coach (2014-2015) and wide receivers coach (2016-2017).  there would be a lot of familiarity there. Just a thought.

    No simply no

    1. WR: Hilton is slowing down a bit, Campbell has been injured so far and the rest are back ups at best. We need a REAL play maker, I wouldn't be opposed to AB in Indy if he checks out after his mental help.

    2. QB- JB is no better than the starters that are being replaced with the Bengals and Bears (If they move on from that mistake). He's Ryan Tannyhill, good enough to stick but not good enough to win consistently.

    3. DE: Houston really brought some pressure, but we need more. Draft a playmaker or find one in FA, but he's needed.

4: RB: I like who we have, but we need another bigger back. There should be plenty available in FA or later in the draft.

TE: I like Jack Doyal, but he's a #2, good, just not a game changer. Getting another TE that can make plays will really open the game up. Ebron gave up on the team, so we should give up on him..

    In order imo it’s

    1) Corner

    2)Wide Receiver

    3)Defensive Line

    4)Kicker

    5)Tight End

umm besides brady and manning name me a good decent pocket passer? cause if you say brees or rogers both are included in the mobile type

I wouldn’t necessarily say they are “mobile” but more so have the ability to improvise and extend plays.

  9. I honestly would love to see us run more cover 3. We have Hooker who is a great Center Field safety and Excels in the Deep third. Yet we play this soft cover 2 which I hate watching Hooker play in. You can run a cover 3 with man matching principles and I believe we have the talent to pull it off. It’s time to ditch the cover 2. Good offensive coordinators know exactly how to beat it.

I hope tonight is the last night we see him in a Colts uniform. The guy couldn’t even cover a quarterback running a corner route. Honestly all of our corners besides Moore have been terrible this year. You think Ballard will actually make a move in free agency or will it be the same old same old and draft a corner and hope he turns out decent?

I was one that was not happy when he was brought back. Folks in this forum was ready to title him as the new Revis after shutting down Hopkins for one game.

I know a lot has already been said about JB’s woes in the 4th quarter  I was wondering what most of you guys thought this stems from?  Is it play calling or just JB getting rattled?

I may be wrong but I think it’s a JB problem. If anyone remembers the year luck missed half the year, I believe we led the league in leads going into the 4th quarter. I used to put the blame squarely on Pagano and his predictable play calling, but now I’m not so sure.  I think some of it’s was pags,  but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that both coaches are having trouble with the 4th quarter and the main common denominator is JB.

If it is JB, what is his problem and is it fixable?  Are teams blitzing more later In the game when the tension is at its highest?

He does not have a killer Instinct. Luck did which is why Andrew really excelled in clutch situations. Jacoby is too busy mentally processing what he sees to pull the trigger. Luck had sort of a Manning-Esque wrinkle to his game. Where his pre-snap reads he likely already knew what coverages you were in and where he already wanted to go with the ball.

You missed the point. Having guys like Pascal as a depth piece makes is stronger.

Sorry your point wasn’t extremely clear. Sounds like you were speaking as if you thought they were good enough to be a number 1. But I get what you mean now.

Looks like we might have found two really good WR in pascal and Johnson. Pair them up with TY, Campbell and a draft pick next year that could be a force. I don’t think we need to go get a FA next season. Just draft a guy and this WR group will be very good.

Regarding Johnson imagine if he had been here earlier in the season when TY was healthy.

Really good is a stretch, serviceable backups is what they are imo. Tampa Bays secondary is not the greatest if we are being honest here.

If he was injured for that long and struggling we need to reevaluate our coaches.

I don’t think it’s a coaches thing to be honest. You have to remember that these are professional athletes who want to be in the game at all costs. Most of the times the coaches will ask a player how bad the injury is and if they feel they can  go or not. More often than not those players will downplay the injury and try to fight through the pain for the team, It’s not always on the coaches.

Yep strange he was on the injury report. They have had enough. This kid will have a great chance to show he can be our future kicker.

It’s not strange, they have been saying that he’s been dealing with an injury for some time now. It could be a cop out it could be legitimate but we will never know.

Bullcrap the only reason people say that about him is because of the timing I believe he tried everything he could to recover from the injury and play it just didn't heal for whatever reason so he made the best decision not only for himself but the team too.

    Brissett blows.

    He stinks anyway.

Cain May not be as good as we all hoped but he still knows the playbook and the system and that’s better than picking up a guy off the street that has to learn this system.

Bridgewater wouldnt be bad, but the guy I’d take a look at from N.O. Is Taysom Hill! Good things seem to happen whenever that guy touches the ball! Granted he’s only used as a trick play/running qb, he would be worth a good look at!

I don’t think that NO will let Bridgewater go unless he really wants to. I think Brees is on the Tail end of his career and he is their future.

What is the possibilities of the Colts aquiring Foles. I think he IS A WAY better QB than Brissett. Much higher cieling and has history with Riech. Maybe we push for him and he can be the right guy for us.

When would we acquire him? It’s past the trade deadline and I believe he is still under contract for Jax after this season.

Muhammad plays a lot in games (48% of the defensive snaps this seasons per pro football focus) as he’s the main reserve off the bench when guys needs a rest.  You still need the bodies at linebacker.  They have three starters and then a couple of reserves.  They aren’t going to cut either of those guys because of the chance of injury and the fact that the reserves play a big role in special teams.  Franklin MIGHT be expendable if they really had too but cutting guys that play to protect a guy you aren’t even dressing makes no sense.

That still leads us to question , Why isn't he dressing? There is something more here with Wilson that we don’t know thats going on behind the scenes.
