You can't measure what is "right" in a vacuum, or just by "feel". It takes so much more than that. The Colts front office performance is judged in relationship with all the other teams in the NFL. Just trying to objectively align the different perspectives of the scouting and coaching staff requires more sophisticated evaluation methods than what we saw in the video.

It doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling, but I understand this is the way a lot of organizations work.

My response was in regards to another posted suggesting that the Colts need to get the pick right when it comes to picking a WR. I agree with you .

This is just me but I would be hugely disappointed if the Colts went with DeJean at any point in round 1. He projects best at safety in the NFL and that position has devalued over the last few years.

What he “projects” and what he would play are two completely different things. Idk why people sleep on DeJean, he’s going to surprise a lot of people wherever he ends up going. The kid is a DAWG.

They are arguing about Worthy I think... about his weight... one of the scouts said "that's why we have strength staff and resources"... Ballard doesn't believe he can get much bigger.... 10-12 pounds... that's pretty much in line with what you hope he will gain...

they could’ve been talking about a lot of prospects lol I don’t think it’s specifically about Worthy. Nate Wiggins comes to mind as a very slim prospect also.

Agreed on possibility of getting a great talent and WR1 outside the top receivers but need to get it right and the board has to fall favorably, and sometimes that might need a trade-up which may be unfavorable for the Colts. However, if the team believes in him that much, cost shouldn't be a hindrance ideally, and willingness to give up would be the question mark.

The need to get it “right” falls on the scouting department and the coaching staff at the end of the day. Trading up just doesn’t make sense. I could understand if it were a WIN NOW mode, but this roster is atleast a year or two from being able to compete for a Lombardi. You don’t mortgage draft capital under those circumstances.

    Two relevant points.

Regarding the team ALWAYS going to be run first team, RB shelf life is short and JT has already played a lot of years compared to average peak time for RBs, so there aren't many years in him into the future unless he goes on like Adrian Peterson. This team was run first because QBs weren't good, was it run first with Andrew Luck? I don't think this team is going to be run-first offense ALWAYS, especially after drafting AR, while expecting him to grow to be a franchise QB-level passer.

Yes, it's all true that Jefferson got drafted at 22,Ceedee went 17, Juedy went 15 , Aiyuk 25 and Higgins 33 but GM has gotta pick the right guy at right time and other teams shouldn't get to the right guy before Colts do.

For every Jefferson at #22 example, there's a Jalen Reagor at #21. The toughest part in picking Jefferson at #22 is not picking a bust like Reagor and missing out on Jefferson. As you go away from the top of the Draft, hitting on busts is more likely than exactly drafting the perfect right guy. Drafting isn't that easy, without the help of hindsight.

Right now, We can't name which of the WRs in upcoming draft will be a good value, good return pick, even though this draft class is super, super deep on WRs. Of course, 4 years later in 2028, everyone can point out Jefferson or Higgins or Lamb or Aiyuk of 2024 WR Draft Class.

Are you aware of who the OC’s were under the Luck era? That’s the reason it wasn’t a run first team because of the offense that was ran. AR’s skillset is the reason why he’s perfect for an RPO style of offense. As for JT he’s going to be a Colt till atleast 2025. It’s easy to point out players in hindsight but the entire point is everyone is claiming the need to trade up to secure a “Generational” talent but many have already boasted that this is the best WR draft class since 2020. We can strike gold on a WR that is not named Harrison , Nabers or Odunze.

If we trade back, I won't be happy at all. We need an impact playmaker at WR. Pittman is a good #1 (not great), he is a good possession WR which is needed. Having said that, we need someone that can blow the doors off of teams that they fear like a Marvin, Nabors, or Rome. In today's league you have to score a lot of points to win - keep up with teams like the Chiefs, Ravens, and Cincy with Burrow.

We need to trade up, JMO.

This draft is loaded with offensive talent as Ballard noted. The move up to try to secure a MHJ , Nabers or Rome will be STEEP. People are forgetting how good a Adonai , Brian Thomas, Troy Franklin or Legette could be. This team will always be a run first team not a pass centered team so the need for a DYNAMIC Wr isn’t really as pressing as people make it seem. You can still get quality players if you trade back and acquire more picks for MORE quality players. Just look at the 2020 draft class Justin Jefferson didn’t come off the board until pick 22.
Ceedee went 17. Juedy went 15 , Aiyuk 25 and Higgins 33. So I disagree I don’t think we NEED to trade up and I surely hope they don’t.

Good to see this happen.  Hopefully JB stays healthy this year.   If he does he’ll likely have a good year setting himself up for a better deal next year.

This probably ends the talk of signing Simmons, though there might still be a very slight chance….    :peek:

I don’t think it ends the talks entirely. Simmons fits into Gus system well. He can play up top and Blackmon excels in the box. They could decide they aren’t comfortable with the play of Thomas and Cross and decide to bring him in. I will say that I think at this point in Simmons career he probably wants to got to a team that is a contender. But I will hold hope that he ends up being a Colt lol

Since this is a WR surplus my thinking is teams may play this differently than if their was a lack of prospects. I don't completely shut out the draft projections but at the end of the day I know teams have their own criteria and it can often be quite different than what the talking heads think. I'm expecting somebody to be there who we didn't think would be there. For me the only guy I'm crossing off the list of possibility is MHJ.

I’m sure someone will most certainly slide I just don’t think it will be a WR. Possibly another position maybe Edge or CB. If you look at the current Draft order all the teams except maybe 2 or 3 before us have  a pressing need for a WR.

This draft for WR is supposed to be like the 2020 draft. In that draft the first WR off the board didn't even happen until pick 12. And then the next one at 15 coincidentally.

I'm saying it's not a sure thing that many WR are going high and early

Some think that Nabers is actually the best WR in this draft class. I don’t think he makes it out the top 10 if I’m being completely honest.

I can't lie. Rome Odunze is nice.

I like his competitive fire and his game is

pretty polished. Love the size and his speed

is good. Very reliable and I don't have a hard time seeing Ballard pick him. Seems like he would go good with Pittman and Downs. It's not hard to be confident about him being a really good player in the NFL.

He won’t fall to 15 they would need to trade up to get him and that almost certainly would cost a lot of capital.

Just for arguments sake... Say the Colts finish below or around .500 this upcoming season and that's a strong possibility with a tougher schedule while also having to navigate inside their own division against teams which by all accounts have upgraded in talent level as they try to make a playoff push by first winning the division which gives you the easiest path to get in.

IMO someone will take the blame because of the ground swell narrative of "one play away with a backup qb" that's been used as far as how good this team is by some who justify the lack of any DIFFERENCE making moves outside the resigning of our own. I do think the offense will improve with a healthy AR but I also think it won't matter in the end because the Colts will not benefit from one of the easiest schedules from a season ago. I say Gus will be the odd man out. His meh type defense set a Colt sack that came against  some bad offenses which were led by either backups or rookies.

Has to be Gus outside of the sack production the defense hasn’t been the greatest and it has also been the Achilles heel of this team at times.

Is there a way to distinguish these players as top 20 picks or possible UDFAs?  A big difference.

I think in the past, some of these top 30 visits were to get a better look at guys they might sign as priority UDFAs or late round picks.  Maybe that's not the definition of top 30.

Edit:  I see that the subject has already been raised.

I think it’s all subjective to the team tbh. Everyone grades prospects differently. Some have Worthy as a first round selection and others in the second. The Colts in the past have drafted Guys graded to go in the later rounds earlier, for example Dayo and Leonard.

  13. Not sure if there is already a thread for this but the Colts have started to schedule top 30 visits with prospects. So far they scheduled one with…

    WR - Xavier Worthy (Texas)

    CB - Jarrion Jones (FSU)

    WR - Ramel Keyton (Tennessee)

    SAF - Chris Edmonds (ASU)

OT - Travis Glover (Georgia State)

    SAF - Mark Perry (TCU)

    LB - Jamal Hill (Oregon)

please add others that you may know of.

I think that’s why he’s testing FA.  Ballard has a number in mind and Blackmon has his.  I would bet that they have an agreement where if Blackmon gets an offer he wants to sign he will bring it to Ballard to respond.  Since he was drafted by the Colts I would expect Ballard has some leeway on what he will pay.  So if Blackmon sighs elsewhere it will be interesting to see what he received.  I think the Colts bringing in another safety yesterday is part of a fall back plan.  At least for SS.  Cross has shown improvement at SS.  So Bringing back Blackmon makes sense to me if they both are happy with the contract.

Why do you think bringing him back makes sense? Do you know how many games he has missed over the span of his career? I’m almost certain that if Ballard 100% whole heartedly wanted him back he would have been back. Kenny , Grove , Pittman even Lewis all were retained. Even  tho they had offers elsewhere. I think they’re ok losing Blackman in FA. Their are capable guys available who can fill that void. Like I said we know what we get with Julian but his health is the largest issue. You don’t pay a guy knowing he is injury prone and has a history of it. Why do you think Hooker left? I’m almost certain they don’t want to chance it.

I would rather have Blackmon back actually.  Blackmon is visiting the Bills too. These players are learning what there value is.   Nothing wrong with that.

Your best ability is availability , why bring back someone who can’t stay healthy? I may be in the minority but I actually don’t want to retain Blackmon. He’s a good player when healthy but that’s the thing he isn’t often that. You’re going to shell out 6-8 million a year for a guy you’re possibly going to get MAYBE 10 games out of?
