  1. I will say one thing about the pick. When Luck came and prospered, one of the reasons was because of Reggie. Having a big bodied possession receiver he could count on really helped him, and they were fantastic together until Reggie's injury. I would not take Corey Davis, but although the flamethrowers will come out, I would take Mike Williams if he was there. He is a guy who is going to be a great player I believe. Not blazing speed, but catches everything. I think he will be a number 1 receiver in the NFL, much like Dez, and as much as I like TY, he is more of a 2 than a 1. Think if he was the second best receiver on the team. If he does go with BPA, you never know.

That said, although I honestly would not be upset with it, I still hope it is Foster or Reddick, or a trade back. Also now that the Doctor has come out about Sidney, although I don't think he will be ready to really contribute this year, my fear was how he would return. Would he be the same person. The one thing if you read closely is the injury to his achilles should not have any effect on his future performance. A trade back would give us ammunition to take him early 2nd. I hate to think about the Jags there early in the 2nd ready to jump on BPA who falls, and with the medical, Sidney could be that player.

  2. This is just a thought, but if we did take Forrest Lamp at #15, our OL would look somewhat like Dallas as far as draft picks. LT-1st rd, LG-2nd rd., C-1st rd., RG-1st rd., RT-3rd rd. I have no idea what is going to become of Castanzo, and I hope LC turns into a great RT, but the one thing when I look at all those picks is our line could be great, but when we start having to extend, we are going to put forward some major cap space. Couple that with Luck, but in the end when you look at Dallas running over people, and the time Dak had to throw, which was all day, could you imagine what Andrew would do with 5-6 seconds? Regardless though, I cannot remember us ever being deep and good on the DL, and although our OL was good under Peyton, it was never great. Would be nice to have both.

It seems like when it comes to some players, their background seems to always get brought up and almost overshadow why the player is being talked about.

As a player, D.Cook balled out his entire collegiate career, and will do the same in the NFL. If you don't like it,

I agree he was a great college player, and he probably will be a very good NFL player. Only two problems though.

He has already had 3 shoulder surgeries, so availability at times may be a question, which scares me. I know two of the surgeries and I believe all 3 were on the same shoulder.

Second, he had one of the highest fumble rates in college football as I remember. Has a lot of trouble hanging onto the ball, and players in the NFL will know this, and they will be looking to punch and swat the ball whenever he has it. Fumble troubles can be worked on, but he has had trouble hanging onto the ball. I wonder if the right shoulder which he has had the surgeries on has played a part in that.

I have no problem getting a stud RB in the 1st, but Fournette will be gone, and I don't think McCaffrey will be there. So although he is a great RB and well worth the 1st round grade, there are issues other than the group of friends he hangs with.

  4. Guys, sorry I missed my 2nd round pick yesterday, I got busy with my students and could not get away from IU. The Feeney pick was a good one though since the two main needs were OL and LB for them. Took Williams in the 1st because as a GM, I could not resist having him paired with Green. I will make sure I am watching for my 3rd and 2 4ths coming up. Also, way too much given up for Fitzgerald. This is probably his last year!

  5. With the 9th pick, a bit of a surprise. The Bengals select WR Mike Williams from Clemson.

I know Bengals need linebacker help and OL help after losing two starters, but the passing game last year was hurt with all the FA defections. Boyd did not look great, and I want a beast to pair up with Green.

Pairing Mike Williams up who looks like a number 1 to me and A.J. Green, both big bodies, and great hands, I would not want to be the DB's chasing them in today's passing league.

  6. I know there is an argument about getting full value, but if you move back 12 spots that is a lot. I would ask for the KC 2nd round and 3rd round comp at 104. They probably would say too much although it works out perfectly via the chart. I would come back with you want us to move back 12 spots, then we get your 2nd, 3rd comp. and we will give you our first round at 15 and our last 4th round comp. pick. I think that would be very fair, especially since we should get the 2nd and 3rd comp. without giving back anything except our first.

I love the picks, but I do not believe Takk or Fabian Moreau would be there, but I would love an extra second and third, and not mind losing that last fourth rounder. Takk is going to go first round or early second and Moreau second. Regardless, so much depth having all those picks in the late first through the 4th would yield quite a few starters I believe. It would be a great trade, but I do believe we sacrifice that one surefire starter we get at 15.

    It's  Definitely a possibility.

Nothing like getting a career Special Teams coach to lead us to the promised land.

Seems to have worked for Baltimore, and when you think about hiring a special teams coach, it makes sense he would be a good head coach. No one works with more players and more different situations which you need to plan for. You have to be great at integrating personalities and let players know this is an integral part of the game, although these are not the star players. Getting them to buy in is a very special quality when you consider how many, and probably how much each situation changes the personnel. You have to work with both sides, the offense and defense. Besides the Head Coach, I doubt any coach knows the personnel of a team as well.

One more point, I have heard and read nothing but positive things about him. I like the thought process!

  8. If we continue to run a press coverage, he just does not fit our system anyway. Great in zone coverage, and although very good, I don't think people take into account how much Earl Thomas helps him. Certain players are great due to the system. Sherman in our system would be good, but not nearly the career he has had. When was the last time a high prospect was traded and it worked out really well for the other team, except for Revis and NE, and that was one year. Then they let him walk, and it was downhill.

  9. As far as the rush, and if we could pull off those deals, I would probably go for Watt if he was there in the 1st. Would provide the rush, plus I don't think you get Reddick and Davis. It would be a nasty duo, but I would like to get some more push. Also, I agree, about CB. Needs to be addressed sooner, but if going for a splash, Reddick and Watt would be a good tandem in the 1st.

  10. I would love to trade back, but only if we can get close to value, not going back 10 spots for only one pick. I would be happy though to trade back, pick up a second or a third, and the 2nd pick acquired be next year. I am sure he is looking at this as more of a 2 yr. plan right now to get a real start on what he wants.

Next, I am guessing he has players in the first he knows would really help this team. A player like Foster falls to us, you take him. Too big a value for how big a hole we have there.

I also don't think you can underestimate the point of having those 3 4th rounders. We may only have 7 picks, but those 3 in the 4th are going to be very important picks for us, and there should be some really good players, so although we have only 7 picks, I think the fact we have 6 of those picks in the top 143 really puts us in a good position, which means good value and I think trading back means less. Round 6 and 7 picks are nice, but we have so many holes, with our 7 picks we should be able to get several players who can contribute right away, and I think he will be looking for that. Not developmental players, which are more in round 6-7.

Trading back in the 1st and grabbing a 3rd round OLB? Doubtful.

More likely Jordan Willis at the top of the 2nd.

For the first time I saw Jordan Willis move up into a couple mocks in the late 1st round. The guy has mammoth production, and has the athletic ability of Reddick and Foster or close to it. If we moved back and got the right price, I could see him as getting picked in the 28-32 spot. I would like him more in the early 2nd if we could get someone's pick there, but I think he is a great talent, and would love to have him.

If I had my own picks, I would get Foster or Reddick in the first and Willis in the 2nd. The 3rd and 4th would be about DB's and OL. I think if you had Foster/Reddick and Willis, your LB corp immediately looks set for the future. All three of those guys have major athletic skills, high motors, and terrific college production. Exactly what i want!

Jags take Fournette, I'll lay odds on that all day. Cook is the wildcard, he could go anywhere 5-14, but he should be gone by the Eagles pick. McCaffrey won't make it past Denver at 20 (unless OJ Howard falls to 20), so I see it definitely happening. The question is, will they all go before us, or will McCaffrey make it to our pick.

Howard is moving up quickly and is one of the best TE's to come out in a long time. Alabama just did not utilize him. He dominated in the Senior Bowl, can block which is a plus, and will be gone in the top 10. I would not be surprised to see Jacksonville actually take Howard. Sounds a bit early, but they are looking for a way to let their defense develop with the talent they supposedly have there, and help Bortles enough so he can manage the game. TE's and RB's are a QB's best friend, so I expect one of those two, but I still think it wil be Fournette.

Also when I say Jacksonville and all the talent they have on defense, which they do have some, but if they were that incredibly talented, could Bortles really be holding them back that much, or is it we just think they are talented all over because they are always drafting in the top 5 it seems, or at least top 10. If you are talented, at some point you have to win? Just a sidenote I had been thinking about because everyone raves about the talent they have, yet they do not win.

  13. I have no idea if we want McCaffrey, but it depends on who is still on the board, and if it were Denver and you know he is going McCaffrey, then you have to look at the teams who are 16-19 and their team needs. If Reuben Foster is there at 15, I say don't trade, but on the other hand, if Foster and Reddick are both there, and the teams behind you do not need LB, although BPA may rule, you say it is a 300 pt. difference. You start off with both their 3rds, their normal pick and conditional pick, and their 5th rounder. That gives you 301 and matches up with the trade chart. I think they balk at the 5th but it could be used as leverage and would be really happy getting two 3rds to move back 5 spots, and as far as the value chart you could argue they got the better deal, although that would not be my position.

If they back down or if prefer this scenario, ask for their 2nd round pick and switch our 3rd round pick with your conditional 3rd round pick. That is perfect on the trade chart, we move back in the third, but we get an extra 2nd which I would love. Either one works for me.

The important thing is although this draft is very deep which is good for us since we are looking for a bunch of young quality guys we can mold. We have said give us a year so a deep draft helps us. There is a delineation mark around the top 17, which I think is important, and helps us for a trade back scenario. For us, we are DB depleted, and although the top DB's will be gone by our pick, there are plenty of good ones from twenty on. Maybe Marlon Humphrey, and then Kevin King or Buddha Baker with our 2nd round or there pick. Regardless, moving back 5 picks, as long as we get full value, it would be worth it , and there are a couple ways to work it on the value chart any team wanting to move up.

Just remember when negotiating, any team who wants to move up probably has fallen in love with a guy, possibly did not believe he would still be there, so make sure they pay full value for it. Othewise you take Foster or Reddick.

  14. I admit to not having read the interview, but I think very few owners don't give some input on the draft. The difference being of course, how much the GM must listen to it, and have to go along. Having said that, I believe Irsay when hiring Ballard has gone back to a strategy of when the club was most successful, and Irsay could be talking about what he has discussed with Ballard, and he is using the interview to channel Ballard's draft vision.

One of the reasons Ballard did not get a GM position earlier, was the fact he was very honest when interviewing about the problems he saw with a franchise, and his vision on fixing it. I have read many articles detailing the  view this is why he did not get the Chicago GM position. Do I know this for sure, no, but from his demeanor I can see Ballard more of a type of guy who truly wants to build something, and is not going to ignore problem areas within an organization. We have already started to see this as he has started to clean house.

Irsay's most successful years were when he let Polian essentially run the club. Polian has been very involved with this hire. It may be Irsay has realized his error, and hired someone more like Polian, thus he is only relating Ballard's draft strategy going forward.

  15. One more quick note. I think the fact Ballard stayed away from OL in FA may mean he believes Haeg and Clark are going to continuing developing, hopefully into a very good RG and RT. They made really good strides at the end of the year, and OL lineman are not equipped to come in the first year and help in general. Kelly was an exception, and was who I wanted in the 1st. He was from Alabama, ran a Pro Style offense, and clearly was ready to step up into a plug and play role. Very few OL, even high first round tackles have proved they are ready over the last few years. At best they may be ready to play guard. Think about all OL's who have been drafted high over the last few years who have been busts. Kalil, Joekel, Robinson, DJ Fluker, and the list goes on! Thus Ballard may be hoping for continued improvement in Clark and Haeg to lock that side of the OL down. I would prefer to go defense so they can come in, compete, and contribute immediately. Foster or Reddick would be able to imo, Lamp whether you like him as a prospect or not is a crap shoot based on what we have been seeing thanks to the spread, and lack of offensive line coaching in college football.

  16. I would love Jarrad Davis in the 2nd, but he is moving up boards now. I just saw him in the first round on one of CBS Sportsline expert's draft. Of course, last year when the season was over, Clark was being mocked as a 1st rounder, which I understand since he has all the athletic talent you could ever want, he was just very raw coming out of Texas Tech, where they don't go into stances. My point, certain players will drop, no doubt about it. Regardless my gut says:

    1st: Foster or Reddick

    2nd Baker or Jackson

    3rd King (Iowa) or Lawson

Lawson is one of those players because of his physical problems and not being able to keep on the field could drop. I have seen him anywhere from late first to late third. I believe the smart thing to do is go CB in the 2nd and 3rd because of the depth in this draft, which is not likely to repeat for a bit, but can you imagine Davis dropping to the second and having Foster or Reddick paired with Davis for the next 10 years. If Davis did drop into the 2nd, I would almost be tempted to trade up for him, and use those 4th rounders on DB. Still my gut says.

  17. Since the jaguars are in our divisions, I am sure like all of you everyone has been looking at their FA pickups. Almost all the mock drafts have them taking Jamal Adams out of LSU, and a couple have them taking Soloman Thomas from Stanford. After looking at their FA, they let Cyprien go, but picked up Church who is a better fit, and they are now set at the safety position after taking Ramsay last year. You don't use the fourth pick for depth, so then I thought CB, but they picked up Bouye, plus it is a very deep pool. Thomas does not make sense either since they picked up Calais Campbell for 14M/yr., although he is 30 yrs. old, so I guess you could make an argument. I have seen one mock draft lately which has them taking Fournette, and as much as they have stocked up on defense, and as much as Bortles has regressed, I am sure they just want to make sure he can manage the game. Plus Tom Coughlin as president will make a difference since he is not high on Bortles. It seems to make sense they may go with Fournette. Limit your mistakes, and hope that all the young talent and FA's become really good. Don't know if it will work, but it seems with their FA strategy they may head this way.

  18. You have to admit though, it is nice to see a GM who actually has a plan, and is not just throwing things against the wall to see what sticks. I agree on pumping the brakes, but this is the way you build a team for years to come. I know we would be all excited if we signed the most talked about the FA's, and I really wanted a DT and RG, and we still may get one who knows. One thing I do believe, you don't win by paying one guy who is 30 14m/yr. and another guy 13.5/M a year who has only shined for one year in a really good defense. How has FA worked for the Jags the last few years spending all that money?  It can work, but after seeing the past 5 years under Grigson, I believe Ballard actually has a long term vision, and I like it. Make improvements now, and next year if needed, we will be loaded with cap space, improved by the signings and draft, and can then get FA's we know fill very specific holes, much in the way Denver did the last 4 years. Just happy to have him aboard.

  19. We will know tomorrow who or if we make contact with as far as any FA's. You should know Ballard's direction very quickly. I would imagine Rappaport and Shefty will be using Twitter fast and furious all day to relay what is going on in agents talking with GM's.

One more thought, if we are going to get one of the 4 top RG's, 8M will be the starting place I believe. Too much money out there. We are one who has cap space, so use some of it wisely. Good young players. That is why I favor Warford, Zeitler over Lang.
