  1. I just posted Jeremiah's first draft, plus all the talk I have heard, has Edmunds going in the first, and very high. He has a higher ceiling than Roquan Smith due to his size, and I think will test really well. As I said above, even that small move, I would probably try to get more.

When Kiper was doing his draft the other night, and Polian was speaking, he said something interesting. He said you so rarely pick in the top 3, and if there is a play maker you like, unless you get another 1st in addition to other picks, he would never move out of the spot. So as I said, I don't know about a future 1st, plus the second, etc. but it has happened before. Possible elite QB's make the draft so much more interesting. Look at last year's QB class and the trades, and none of them were considered elite coming into the draft.

  2. I think you can almost throw the draft value chart out when you are trading up in the top 3 to get what a team sees as its next franchise QB. You can't totally, but we have seen time and again, when a team falls in love with a QB, and needs a franchise QB, you can really do well trading down, and demanding more than the trade chart.

Just look at Robert Griffin III I think only traded up one spot if I remember, from third to second, maybe two, but look at what they gave up. It was a goldmine of picks for LA (St. Louis at the time), which far exceeded the chart. There are plenty of other examples over the years. Point is, in the top 5-10 especially, if a team wants a player, and falls in love, it becomes a game of a good GM understanding his leverage.

  3. Jeremiah who I actually like as an evaluator from NFL.com came out with his first draft. He always has a little bit different take on players, and his first draft which just came out, since he waits until after practices are over for the East West Shrine Game are over is interesting. A lot of names I have heard before, but not linked to the first round. It will be interesting to see how much things change before and after the draft, because names always come up into the first round I never really knew. That is why I like looking at his drafts, and he is right a lot of the time.

First thing that caught my eye was how much he likes Davenport and Edmunds. I have seen Hughes sneaking up boards into the first round although he has not been discussed much. Isiah Wynn and James Daniel are players I will need to check out since I had not even heard their names, and have not seen one in the first round on other mocks, although Walter Football has Wynn in the 2nd I believe. One name I thought would be on here although he does mention it, is Dallas Goedert, but he says the two TE's are interchangable picks basically. I would love to get Goedert in the 2nd round. Another Dallas at TE for us would be perfect, and people really like his game. Their are 3 really good TE's, the other from Oklahoma, so it will be interesting to see where they all go. Thoughts on all the new names?

  4. After watching the show, I came away with the thought that unless the Colts move back to around the 9-11 area, there is no way we are going to be taking Quentin Nelson from Notre Dame. Although I love the guy, I believe with McDaniel's offensive scheme, and Luck getting rid of the ball quickly most of the time, a guard at #3 just does not make sense.

I think Chubb or Barkley, depending on who is there will be the choice, although if Barkley is there, and a QB, or even possibly Chubb, there are going to be teams wanting to move up. I really came away thinking how much I would like Chubb after all I have read on him lately, but if the right picks were involved, and we could move down just a bit, have to think about it. I found it interesting that Polian said he would not move off our spot unless we got at least another 1st draft pick next year, and one more high round this year. It seems Barkley, Chubb, Rosen, and Darnold, and possibly Allen are going to have a lot of suitors vying for them. FA will change all this, but Ballard is going to have to make some tough decisions on draft day I believe.

Can't believe it is only 3 months away.

  5. I am guessing someone has already talked about it, but there are so many replies, I thought I would ask again.

Don't you believe McDaniel's taking the HC position is a very positive sign about Luck's shoulder and health? I know McDaniel's liked Jacoby Brissett, but Luck is far and away superior when healthy. I would think it would be one of the major considerations for McDaniel's taking the HC position of the Colts.

I know we are all in the dark, but I see this as a positive. Thoughts?

  6. No prognostications here, but the Colts are doing this and keeping it very quiet. Every leak we hear is wrong. They were interested in Nagy, and he could have had the job it seems, but he was never offered the job. A small difference, but my point is the media was wrong, and Ballard is doing all this very low key, under the radar, and every time there is a story, it seems some part of it is wrong. Rhule was interviewed, that is all. The way Ballard operates, I truly believe he is using the opportunity to scout out coaches for the future.

Now Kris Richards is no longer the Seahawks DC, so he is not under contract. It is possible Ballard and him talked and with the direction they seem to want to take the defense he would make sense as the DC. I also think it is possible that McDaniels and him have an agreement, but as I said, everything is being kept quiet, which in this day and age is amazing. Who knows though, McDaniels may want to go to the Giants.

My point is, until an acceptance happens, not an offer, I don't think we are going to know anything. The one thing I truly hate about all of this is how each time someone is looked at, all they can talk about is Luck's health, and speculating on what part it plays. Whoever we take, I want a coach who wants to coach the Colts. I think Ballard feels the same. I do believe Luck will be back, but I don't know the future. I just know I want a coach who wants to work with Ballard, who from what I have seen is very good, and thorough! Buckle up, because it may be until after the Super Bowl before we know anything, unless the Patriots lose, and although I am one who would like McDaniels to be our coach, I sure hope they lose sooner than later. I do not want to see them in another SB!

  7. Waiting for the forum to explode because he is now one of the candidates. If Indy Star is running a story about him, they must be considering him. As far as everyone saying Irsay would not allow it, from everything I have read, this is Ballard's decision. You may want to peruse the article, since at the bottom, Keefer says he thinks Toub will still be interviewed. I think Ballard is going to look under every rock. He is very diligent, and who knows maybe he is looking to hire one of the guys as an assistant coach, or something no one has thought about.

Look, I have no idea how good of a coach Rhule is, but he is highly thought of in College coaching circles. Baylor hired him for that specific reason, since the mess they had, and what he did at Temple. I don't think he has enough experience on the NFL level, but unlike this forum, I think Ballard knows a little more than I do about what he wants and is looking for in a coach. Whatever his decision, I trust him. We have no idea how good of a coach Rhule can or could be. All we have is judgments and who we each would prefer.

Wouldn’t be my choice. He’s done well, but he’s done well with Tom Brady as his QB.

Always skeptical of co-ordinators that do well with enormous amounts of talent. Prefer over-achievers.

I would prefer Toub because of fit, but I am more than willing to give McDaniels a chance, and think because of the route schemes the Patriots run he could fit in well if he has mastered the interpersonal relationship problem he seemed to have in Denver.

That said, New England does not have enormous amounts of talent, except Brady and Gronk on offense over the years. You can add Cook in there but they just acquired him. The success has been how they scheme and get players to buy in, and learn the position and what each is supposed to be doing. Disipline. Look at the players they have, and each one of them has been tailored to his position. None of them were high draft choices, but now they fit like interlocking pieces. When one leaves, they find another to replace. Welker left, Edelman replaced. Also, while not the OL coach, the OL has been injured and reshuffled so much over the past few years, yet it does not seem to hurt them because of scheme, and getting rid of the ball quickly when necessary. Establish those routes, and then you have time to go down the field and down the middle of the seam with Gronk.

  9. Right now you have 4 qb's you are talking about, and I believe after the combine, heck even before there really are five. Why no one has Lamar Jackson in the group no one is talking about I don't know. Walter Football site seems to like him a lot. He improved quite a bit on his pocket presence and accuracy this year, and he is going to wow at the combine from an athletic point of view. If all QB's come out, you are going to have 5 QB's to talk about in the 1st round, Darnold, Rosen, Jackson, Mayfield, and Allen.

One other point, I don't think we can know how this is going to apply to the draft until we get through FA since there are going to be some good QB's moving around this year in FA, which rarely happens. I think Brees stays put, Manning also and will mentor a year or two before retirement since I don't think he wants to go to another team, and Mara seems to feel the same.

So you have Alex Smith and Kirk Cousins. Tyrod Taylor, Dalton, and Tannehill may become available. Of course if the last four leave, all those teams now need franchise QB's. It is going to be a wild FA with the decision teams make on QB's.

My main point is Lamar Jackson is going to come into the conversation which is good for us.

  10. I have not seen his name mentioned here, or in the media which is surprising, but what about Todd Haley. I know it did not end well in Arizona, but he has taken Pitt's offense to a new level, playing to their strengths. If we want an offensive minded guy, he seems like he would be on the radar, but I just don't hear his name which as successful as their offense has been the past two seasons is surprising.

  11. Can someone help me confirm a little bit on the cap space for next year so I am sure what is. I see difference between the two sites I use, plus the carry over. The Colts will save roungly 4M (3.9M) by my calculations releasing Vontae Davis. The cap space we still have for this year is 18.7M according to OTC. Add back in Vontae's last 7 game salary checks based on 9M for the season, 1.25 was dead money, giving us 22.6 remaining for this year and to be carried over. Next year the cap space is an astounding 70.3M for 2018. So according to my calculations, as long as no one is released, and not concerning extensions, since I now don't see Mewhort being extended, or Montcrief, and those were my prime two, we are going to have $92.9 Million in cap space heading into next season?

Is this correct? I know we are going to have a lot, but I would just like to get a firm figure in my head considering how Ballard is completely making over this roster.

On another note, I can't believe there are not any really good tackles who are coming free in FA. The year we have money to spend. Hopefully we can find a solid guard and a solid tackle at least. Appreciate the help on the Cap space. It just sounds like so much. We may be number one in cap space going into FA. Can't ever remember that.

The 49ers might be able to but Beathard is not that good and Jimmy needs some time before he is thrown in.  They have the ability to be a little different than us and have Jimmy take a few weeks to learn the system.

The 49ers are going to want to look at Garopolo for as many games as possible. They are by no means locked into him. They only gave up a 2nd, and although looked good for the Patriots, past history says he may not make the cut, and they decide to draft QB anyway. I am sure they hope he succeeds. I hope he does as well and wins some games, so we can move into a higher slot, but this move does not assure Jimmy G. is their QB next year. Likely yes, but they will want to see him get as many reps as possible before making a decision.

  13. The spread dropped from 14 to 7. I know Watson was playing fantastic, but with all the playmakers they have playing well, I think Savage will be OK if they can protect him. I know one team who is happy though. Cleveland. Question is can they get Houston's 1st round pick up to the stage in time? Yeah I know, bad joke too many have made.

With Watson being hurt though, and although ACL's can be repaired so well now, I am wondering about cumulative effects due to how important his mobility is to him. Also, with them not having a 1st or 2nd next year, and the future of what JJ can do and what Houston will do with him, considering all his injuries, next year they have a lot of decisions to make. Plus they have a lot of financial decisions to make. Clowney being number one. Really a tough break for Houston.

  14. I have a question about the Colts and their 2nd round draft position. I don't know of any trade they made which would affect their 2nd round pick status. Regardless when you go to Walter Football who projects us as #6 pick in the 1st round, they have us as having the #44 pick in the second round. Same with Bleacher report, and obviously the #44 pick does not equate with being in the 6th position in terms of draft position. As I said, I know of no trades, and BR lists none, so anybody know whats up with this? Did I miss something?

  15. Hey everyone. Don't comment too much these days, but on this one, I had to. Yesterday I watched Mike and Mike since he said he would readdress what he said.

They waited until Adam Shefter made an appearance to talk about it. Adam knows more about what is happening in the league than most. He actually has contacts. Greenburg just opines.

The first thing Shefter said to Greeny when they started talking about LucK: Where the Hell did that come from?

That was all I needed to hear!

Stupid in my opinion cut tolzien.

Morris has outplayed Tolzien, and we save more if we cut Tolzien. Our Salary cap space  is going to be huge next year, so 2M not a huge deal, but with trading for Brissett is Tolzien really in our long term plans now. If you are going to choose, Morris has showed a lot more upside.

  17. I put all the cuts from today into Over the Cap to get a look at the salary cap. I put in Morris as cut, although I am hoping it is Tolzien. Regardless, with the cuts today, we have 24.7M left for this year, and 66.7M for next year. I know the 24.7M will drop a bit due to signings of players who were released today from other teams. Regardless, it won't drop that much. Am I correct in assuming that 24.7M will carryover to next year and we are going to have almost 90M in cap space next year? I knew we were going to be one of the top teams next year in cap space, but are my calculations correct?

If so, Ballard may want to focus on the draft, but with the CBA spending requirements, we are going to be picking up some FA's. I hope the market has some good ones. I looked for guards and tackles, and of course it does not look like a strong crop next year. Things change though. Thoughts on the Cap Space?

  18. I think we can make the case now Dorsett has been traded for Brissett that Tolzien is gone. I am not going to jump to the conclusion Luck won't be playing for the whole season or how many ever games. I think Ballard realized we needed a backup QB who can actually be decent, and he decided on Jacoby Brissett, and Dorsett was likely to be cut.

I think Luck will be back this season, but I also believe Ballard and Irsay, especially after that interview are saying we are in rebuild mode. They have been saying this since before the draft. Personally I would rather make sure Andrew is perfectly healthy before he comes back, and the line heals up also. This would be a good season to go 5-11. I know no one wants to hear this, and I will not be rooting for it, but think if the year is bad. The bright side is there are at least 4 QB's who are potential top ten picks right now, and I can think of a few more who could crash the party. The draft this year will be the year of the QB, and if we were ever going to have a top ten pick, this would be the best year since trading out of that pick and acquiring capital would be great. We are not going to be great this year, but if the year went badly, I believe it would set us up for next year. We need at least one more good draft of fresh talent, and picking up extra picks would be great. Also, we have a lot of cap room next year. So next year could be the leap year. Ballard is thinking well ahead of this year, which I think is the silver lining since everything looks gloomy right now!

We shall see, but at least realize I think Ballard has been very honest about his expectations this year, and if a bad season follows, a silver lining is there. Next years draft is the time to have a high draft pick.

  19. I personally believe Dave Toub will be the head coach. I was not sold on a special teams coach until I read a couple of articles on Toub. In addition, when you look at what the special teams coach has to deal with, on both sides of the ball, when you have one who excels, they should be as good of a candidate to run a team as any good OC or DC. Tomlin and Harbaugh were both ST Coordinators before being head coach. I don't put a lot of stock into Jason LaCanfora as a writer, but he does do a good job outlining why special teams coaches are prepared to coach, and what a lot of people around the league think about Toub. If we don't hire him, someone else is going to give him a shot. The title of the article is a little deceiving, since it is mostly about Toub, and what he will bring to a team. I don't think Ballard has any problem breaking with convention, and he knows how good Toub is!

  20. I love the fact about what Haeg is saying about the offensive line, working together since the end of the season to become one. Getting stronger, and no longer having to think but can all go out and play. I wonder how much this played into Ballard's decision not to go after any high priced FA signings on the OL and did not draft an OL until the 4th round. As interesting as it will be to see the change in defense, I believe the OL is going to make a big step forward, as it did the last 8 games of last year. Keep Andrew healthy, and more turnovers. Great recipe for wins.

  21. I take this with a grain of salt, but for the first time ever, the sports books have been taking prop bets on the draft. The first night was over under on conferences. Tonight, one of the prop bets is who if anyone will take Joe Mixon in the 2nd round. I was surprised to see the Colts are the odds on favorite by a huge margin. The reason, Gore is getting old, and Mixon too talented to pass. Here are odds: Notice the difference in Indy's odds. I just thought it was interesting.

From BookMaker.eu: Which team will select Joe Mixon in Round 2 of the NFL Draft?

    • Indianapolis Colts: -115
    • Philadelphia Eagles: +150
    • Detroit Lions: +180
    • Tampa Bay Buccaneers: +200
    • San Francisco 49ers: +230
    • New York Jets: +240
    • Seattle Seahawks: +280
    • Baltimore Ravens: +280
    • New York Giants: +300
    • Kansas City Chiefs: +325
    • Washington Redskins: +450
    • Green Bay Packers: +500

For what it is worth, I still think we go defense, CB or LB with all the talent still out there, and I hope it is Awuzie, Tim Williiams or Jordan Willis. Williams would really solidify the LB corp, especially after all the pickups, although we still need someone inside, so I am wondering if Willis could play inside. He has the athletic skills and is plenty fast to cover. Would love Awuzie or even Wilson to go with Hooker.

  22. Due to Conley dropping, and the fact I think Foster and Reddick will go now before 15, I think you are going to see the Colts take Tredavious White or Kevin King. It may be a bit early, but they both fit what Ballard wants in a corner. If Reddick or Foster is there, I would hope it is one of those two due to the CB depth, but don't be surprised. I would not be unhappy about it, since I have liked White all along, and feel if the Colts don't take him another team will in the 1st, and don't be surprised if King goes in the first due to his versatility.
