So, what are you going to do when the Colts are on a bye?  Be a rabble rouser!  I rouse rabble!  Rouse rouse rouse!

This week, PFF did a ranking of general managers.  And, hey presto, Chris Ballard was not in their highest ranking.

    https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-general-manager-rankings-2023-eagles-howie-roseman-chiefs-brett-veach

They made their determinations based on:

    1. Draft pick production compared to expectation
    2. Positional value consideration
    3. Draft trade value
    4. Free-agent signing value compared to expectation
    5. Early extensions

    Their commentary on Ballard:

"The Colts' roster in recent years has resembled a Whac-A-Mole board, where one glaring deficiency has been able to tank what is otherwise a team with talented trench units. For 2023, the secondary is devoid of building-block talent outside of second-round rookie Julius Brents, but the offensive line is seemingly back playing to its talent level after atrophying in 2022. With a lot of positives on display from rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson, who we won’t see again until 2024 due to injury, there’s reason to believe maybe Ballard can build a true contender for the first time since the end of the Andrew Luck era.

Ballard’s best move in a while appears to be the hiring of head coach Shane Steichen, and there should be optimism going forward. Ballard may need to supplement this roster with more free-agent talent than he’s been willing to target in the past, but that’s how you take advantage of the rookie contract window — in moderation, of course."

    Ranking:

TIER 1: CLEAR VISION, SOUND PROCESS, BALANCE OF SHORT- AND LONG-TERM OBJECTIVES

    Howie Roseman, Eagles

    Brett Veach, Chiefs

    Duke Tobin, Bengals

    Jerry Jones, Cowboys

    Bill Belichick, Patriots

TIER 2: CLEAR VISION, MOSTLY SOUND PROCESS, SOMETIMES FOCUSED ON “WINDOWS”

    Brandon Beane, Bills

    John Schneider, Seahawks

    John Lynch/Kyle Shanahan, 49'ers

    Eric DeCosta, Ravens

    Brad Holmes, Lions

    Jason Licht, Buccaneers

    Les Snead, Rams

    Brian Gutekunst, Packers

    Chris Ballard, Colts

    Joe Douglas, Jets

    Andrew Berry, Browns

TIER 3: QUESTIONABLE PROCESS, VARYING RESULTS

    Micky Loomis, Saints

    Chris Grier, Dolphins

    Terry Fontenot, Falcons

    Tom Telesco, Chargers

    Trent Baalke, Jaguars

    Nick Caserio, Texans

    George Paton, Broncos

    Ron Rivera/Martin Mayhew, Commanders

    Scott Fitterer, Panthers

    TOO NEW

    Omar Khan, Steelers

    Monti Ossenfort, Cardinals

    Ryan Poles, Bears

    Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, Vikings

    Joe Schoen, Giants

    Ran Carthon, Titans

    Champ Kelly, Raiders

I think John Lynch should be in tier 1 in my opinion. Their team is loaded with talent and they are winning 7-3. I don’t think Jerry Jones should be up there yeah there winning this year but how long has he been in that position and what have they won?

There are a lot of helmets out there these days. I think the bottom line is if you take a forcible blow to the head, you're probably going to have concussion symptoms, no matter what kind of helmet you're wearing.

I actually do agree with you. I just thought it might a little more is all

It's not the Oline. Minshew's time to throw was 3.42 against the Pats. The league average is: 2.77. Minshew had plenty of time he was just seeing ghosts and bailed out of clean pockets.

I agree with you actually Minschew got to know that for himself and it’ll help his game and our offense.

I swore to myself that all I'd care about this season would be Anthony Richardson's development yet here I am in this thread nodding my head.

Ultimately I can't get over how bad Gardner Minshew is. He's a guy for the occasional fill-in not a main star. So while we have a chance, I think we're probably a .500 team +/- one game because of the QB, and that record's not going to get us in the playoffs in the AFC this year. So while I'm following along and loving the work Shane Steichen is doing, I just can't bring myself to dream playoff, have you not seen the QB?

I think now Minchew is afraid to make a mistake now and it’s hurting our offense big time. I think he just needs go out and play his game and let the chips fall where they may. The o- line just needs to play better and that would help a lot with the strip fumbles from happening.  He moves around so much in the pocket so much he’s afraid of the strip fumble. I say just play your game it’s the ultimate team game.

This O-line isn't the same when Kelly is out, that is a big loss.

I'm sure he has a different helmet, but maybe they can get one like Minshew's? He seems to have extra padding on his than regular.

It looks like Minshew has a helmet that lets the pressure out during a blow to the head and that seems more appropriate to me more should use it.

Probably 1 reason not to many people are saying FA, because they know he's not that active there

Ekubam was a nice pickup last off-season.

Out of you list:(DE, DT, WR, CB, S, LB, RB (should Moss leave) and QB)

    My thoughts are

DE - Lewis and Avery are FA, probably bring both back to camp. Avery was looking good before he went down. Lewis is playing pretty good this year as well. Outside of that we have Ebukam, to go with Paye and Dayo on final years of deal. With Land still in development?

So not sure I see a big splash move there. Maybe a draft pick?

DT - mainly predicated on if we bring Grover back or not. If we do, it will be rotational player at best if we bring in FA. Still have Adebawore developing too. Could definitely see a small contract DT depth FA signing.

WR - Some interesting names out there, but I don't see us paying 2 WRs big money this off-season, having to maybe give Pittman big money. There is suitable replacements out there though if they choose to move on. Think more than likely draft picks makes sense here.

CB - Will have Brents, Jones, Flowers, Speed (skill TBD), returning. Hopefully we can retain Moore. Tough call here, not sure I see a big CB signing (unless Kenny walks, still maybe not), maybe an additional pick for depth?

S - Again will depend on locking Blackmon up.

We still have Thomas and Cross who are young as well as Denbow and Daniel Scott, draft pick from last year. Quality vets can usually be picked up at any time, so can't see a big FA splash here.

LB - we know Ballard can draft LBs, so could see it. Don't see them paying a LB much in FA, whether we keep Shaq or not.

RB - hopefully Moss can be retained, if not I'm pretty sure that will be a draft pick to come in, plus we have Hull coming back.

QB - definitely see a FA signing here if we let Minshew go.

I don’t see Moss still being here next year at all they ran him one time against the Pats.

Legend.  My dad "trained" me to be a basketball player so I could play for coach knight.  I still have a great jumper,  but I only got to 6' and sat the bench.   RIP coach knight

I still have the great jump shot and was a great rebounder but like you, I'm only six foot.  I loved how Coach Knight got his players to play as a team. He also made them into good people. In this year's team, there is too much individual play to much NBA style and that would have never flown with Coach Knight and that's one of the reasons why Coach Knight won so much. Woodson recruits great athletes not necessarily great basketball players who will do everything for the team you can't win championships that way.

I never liked the Paye pick for WHAT Ballard was drafting him for. Paye was NEVER an ELITE or even upper tier pass rusher in college.  He was more of an edge setter that played hard. To expect a guy that had only 11.5 sacks NOT in one season but for his WHOLE college career to suddenly turn into a top level pass rusher in the NFL was a reach.

Not only did Ballard use a first rd pick on a SOLID but nowhere near game changing Paye but DOUBLED down with our 2nd rd pick and used it on Dayo who by the way had only 12 sacks his WHOLE college career. Dayo was also coming off an Achilles tear which is considered by most as a skill altering injury for a DE by robbing them of some speed and torque. Ballard made the choice anyway for ANOTHER solid type knowing that he would also have to sit out his rookie season. What?!

These are the type of decisions combined with some other head scratching moves over the YEARS that has put this team below .500 under Ballard's guidance. Say what you want about HOF gm Bill Polian but the man drafted HOFs or fringe type ones at the PREMIUM positions in both Buffalo and Indy while winning division titles and getting to SBs.

All I see from Ballard after all these YEARS is polished talker trying to use the Polian template by building through the draft and being limited in FA only in Ballard's version there are too many JAG types ESPECIALLY at the positions needed to compete in today's NFL. If it's ALL about "RAS" scores, potential and low risk high reward types in FA then Ballard is your guy along with the ready made excuses by his fans on WHY this team continues to remain non relevant while other teams have flipped since Ballard has been at the helm in Indy.

One of my favorite GM’s has been John Lynch in SF I’ve liked the teams he has built. He is flexible in his decisions he’s not against spending money if need be on the right guy without putting the team in salary cap hell in the long run I’m not a fan so to speak but I like the way their team is built. I agree with you on Ballard he needs to go he’s to stuck in his ways and is not flexible at times when he needs to be. I haven’t like the pass rushers he’s drafted and we need a number 1 receiver. I don’t think Gilmore wanted to play for us anymore but he should have found a way. Irsay is way to loyal.

Jones and Brents are fine for CB.  They still need to learn some more, but they have been playing pretty well (Brents, when available).  WR is a toss up.  I think Minshew is questionable at best, and I think AR would make our WRs look better, and open up the ground game as well.

Yes, and make our running backs look even better.

We’re at the halfway point of the season. I’m actually surprised we’re 4-5 all things considered.

What we do from now until January will bear responsibility for what happens in the off season. Our young corners continue to experience and if they show growth we might be better than some think that department.

Yes, a good pass rush from our edges would help but Paye isn’t getting it done another bad draft pick by Ballard.  So again we need a upgrade there.

  11. My unpopular opinion is that the season isn't over yet and we can make some noise this year even the playoffs are still a possibility Sure, some things need to change like badly Bradley's defensive philosophy to match the talent we have on the field which isn't good on defense right now. I strongly believe we need to move Moore over to the outside and put Brown in the slot. Sure it isn't ideal but sometimes you got to take drastic measures when you are in a pinch. I also think unless he shows me, something by the end of the year we have to cut Shaq who I love but isn't getting it done at the price we are paying him and he isn't  even close to the player he used to be. The suspensions and the injuries have really hurt our defense so we have to make some compromises and it starts with Steichen.

It’s going to be him or Bradley or maybe both gone after the season. Throwing Bradley under the bus and not taking that to coaches privately is not good.

I think he might be right and just doesn’t fit the system. It’s just another thing where Bradley refuses to change.

I’m not a badly Bradley fan at all but I don’t run the team so I can’t fire him but I would if I could.

The good thing about those loses is that we are losing in all the most predictable ways - namely at the spots we are horribly understaffed/injured at - QB, outside corner...

It means that IMO we have something at HC with Steichen and scheme... at least offensively. We just need better talent at certain spots. And we might already have it(but they are injured - AR, Brents, etc.)

This roster needs work, but the areas of concern are relatively well defined. IMO this should not be a hard job for Ballard to figure out. Lets see if he does it next off-

    The Good

    • JT and Moss - Good game by these guys. Too bad the opponents once again played the run and we fell behind with too scores.
    • Downs - He just keeps producing.
    • Pittman - I guess he had an okay game. Only 40 yards on 8 catches though.
    • Still, the offense put up 27 points.

    The Bad

    • Brown - Just no..
    • Franklin - The guy can't cover.
    • Defense in general - Injuries blah blah injuries... There's a general lack of star power and quality depth on this team, but it just shows on defense everytime a starter goes down.
    • Oline - Most expensive Oline in the game keeps getting pushed around.
    • Minshew - He's a backup. It shows.

I don't know, man. Watching this crap is so disheartening. I know we have injuries, but so do every team. The Saints just had, what, 7 guys out with illness during this week? They still came into our house and put up 38...

Yeah, and the Saints have a terrible offensive line still very little pressure from our edges. Our pass rush sucks.
