  1. I want a new Strat, regardless of the fact I don't need a new one. It's no been 4 months since I've really played the Les Paul, I cannot get the same satisfaction out of that guitar that I can a Strat.

    1. Synthetic

Tried playing it again today, meh...The only thing really going for the LP is having that humbucker in the bridge for easy crunch. That's it, but I can get crunch out of a Strat just fine using an overdrive/compressor combo.

Telecaster > Les Paul. I thought the LP could be as useful as a Tele, but it clearly isn't. At least a Tele, you can beat on it continuously and it stays in tune and can handle aggressive playing.

    2. Jules

      Jules

Also the Les Paul has the name "Les Paul" which makes everyone swooooon at times.

Your stuff with the Strat sounds good anyway. It's crunchy and fluffy and trebles and takes a hard beating and everything else in the lingo book I love to hear. lmao

      Jules

You will have to keep the Les Paul though probably. It's pretty and it has sentimental value etc.

  2. I've been into many debates over the years about vinyl vs digital, and this short 3 minute video hits it spot on in the shortest way possible.

I listened to Motley Crue's "Shout At The Devil" album on CD, vinyl, & cassette once & they all sounded completely different even though they were the same arrangements note for note. It's like claiming that a studio recording & a live recording of the same material is identical. It's not.

Shout at the devil!!!!!! Love it.

I still buy CD's too, probably will for the rest of my life. They're so cheap now, you can rack up on old albums.

True that, cds are getting so much cheaper in recent years you can pick some up at times more easily then the old days.

A few were more expensive though like when I got the New Order "Substance" album.

  3. If the negative reception tonight in L.A. is anything to go by, the Chargers should've stayed in San Diego...That stadium is going to be overrun with opposing team fans all the time. It's going to be worse than when it happened at Qualcom. This is only preseason and yet there are so many empty seats and a visible portion of Saints fans all over the place.

    1. Synthetic

The Saints defense looked GOOD last night. I was amazed. We had 30 sacks last year and in just 2 preseason games I think we have around 15 right now.

I know it's only preseason so I am not getting too excited but they looked great against the Chargers starters, and there seems to be a better emphasis on tackling fundamentals which is all I care about. I am so tired of seeing our bad tackling over the years and last night they seemed to be making concentrated efforts at tackling.

They finally won a preseason game and it came on my birthday. lmao

    2. teganslaw

      teganslaw

I've seen statistics on the preseason games, and NO rookie rb, Alvin Kamara, seems like the real deal. I'd be surprised if the Saints don't find a place for him on their roster. He was quite impressive in the two preseason games.

    3. Synthetic

      Synthetic

Kamara is a star so far in preseason. The fans absolutely adore him, I think he makes the team. Lasco probably won't just for this reason.

He reminds em of Chris Ivory a bit but with more speed.

  4. If this article is true in any way, the Saints are trading Brandin Cooks...or they're going to overpay him next season

    http://www.blackandgoldreview.com/2016/12/05/too-many-cooks

    Quote

That’s a mistake. So long as Sean Payton and Drew Brees are Saints together, wide receivers in New Orleans will be pieces, not focal points, so despite Payton’s protests, Cooks seems destined for a trade. Or maybe Payton’s being honest, and Cooks will remain a Saint.

In that case, the Saints will have to overpay him. Like Cooks, the rest of the NFL doesn’t understand that Saints receivers are only about 75 percent as good as they seem. Expect an eventual bidding war, one the Saints may win as they seek to ease the 2018 or 2019 or 2020 transition to The Successor. So it could be a long time before the truth is revealed: Brandin Cooks may think he’s a temporarily embarrassed all-pro, but really he’s just gentrified Devery Henderson.

My gut tells me we are going to overpay him, but logically, he needs to be traded if they go this route.

    1. Jules

      Jules

      Payton's protests?

I know how well respected Sean Payton is but is he too arrogant at this point in his career?

The Saints have truly been a massive letdown. No excuse IMO for a team to collapse at times around Brees when he is still playing at a monster level. No excuse.

You guys will shock people and beat a team like Seattle at times, but then you go and blow a bunch of games and often in close losses in the last few years.

In that same article, it mentions "the virus" which is a term that Bill Parcells used to refer to Sean Payton getting too cute and going pass happy and completely screwing the team with bad game plans. The author makes a joke of it being "Payton is bored". This was certainly the case with the Lions. Our game plan was absolutely terrible...

We are a 3-13 team without Drew Brees. That is a fact. If any fans out there want to pin blame on Brees, I am willing to grab the shield and go to defending him, cause he is the only reason we can even achieve 7-9 every year. Take him away, we go 3-13 or 2-14.

Take our 7 losses this year and I can easily pinpoint a handful of them that were close games, where we easily get blown out bad if it weren't for Brees. The Chiefs game being Exhibit A - they were up 14-0 and statistically dominated us on every chart, but Brees made the game closer than it should've been.

The Broncos game is another example, where Brees played absolutely lights out in the second half to come back and we probably even win that game if our special teams don't screw it up and have a blocked extra point.

They do this every year that they start poorly and finish 7-9

2012 - Started 0-4, demolished an undefeated Falcons who went 13-3 team at home

2014 - started 1-4, beat the living hell out of Green Bay at home

2015 - Started 0-3, destroyed an undefeated 5-0 Falcons team at home

2016 - Started 0-3, destroyed the Seahawks at home.

It's become a trend; the Saints will play horrendous the first month of the season, then in October, they'll game plan for that one big game at home and treat it like it's the Super Bowl. The Seahawks game was a 'Bring the Wood' game this year..We haven't had a baseball bat game since 2011, so there you go. Just an example of how they treat that one game...and that will be our highlight of the season. We finish 7-9 but I'll spend the entire summer saying "at least we destroyed the stupid Seahawks!"

And watch Sunday, we will probably beat Tampa Bay cause we usually do win on the road against them, but in 2 weeks, they will stomp us in the ground in the dome. I actually hope Tampa does beat us, cause they're 7-5, and I'd rather them win the NFC South than the stupid damn Falcons.

  5. In 2007, 2012, 2014, and 2015 the Saints all got back to .500, then lost a close game, then lost the next by an average of 18 points. How bad are we going to get beat tonight?

  6. Indie Rockers: Metric is a great band. Listening to their 2009 album 'Fantasies' for the first time in some years.

These Canadian rockers are great, and Emily Haines has the voice of an angel. Hearing her voice years ago was what originally drew me to this band to sit down with a number of their albums.

The ballad 'Collect Call' is my favorite song from this record. (Wish they did more ballads like this, cause it tends to show the strength of Haines' voice)

Love this cute rocker too with the goofy lyrics: "Who would you rather be; the Beatles or the Rolling Stones?"

Indie bands are usually a hit and miss. Many of them tend to be hipster junk or loud, noisy grunge nostalgia. 'Metric' has a more civilized sound, great production and all around very well organized.

Also helps that Emily Haines is a terrific singer. I love her voice!

LeBron proved all his haters, doubters and critics wrong...He finally got the respect he's deserved. I will never get why people hate that man so much. He broke down crying like a baby when the buzzer hit. That championship meant more to him than anything and I got chill bumps when he said "Cleveland this is for you!". I hated LeBron for years but I learned a valuable lesson in sports when Favre retired and that is that we need to ENJOY these guys while we have them cause they won't be around forever. Instead of people nitpicking them to death, they need to just enjoy the ride cause once they're gone, they're gone forever

At the doctor's office today, there was a kid there telling me and another person about basketball and he kept saying "Bron James is my favorite player!". He was talking so fast, it was hilarious he was saying 'Bron' instead of LeBron and adorable. I told the kid I liked LeBron too and he tells me "he can do everything! He blocks, he scores, he can dunk!". Kids can be so funny in times.

I can't wait for basketball myself to begin again. Really looking forward to it.

I am a bit worried now, my cousin David picked the Lions for Sunday. Thats often a bad sign.....he is pretty good at predictions even though he is a m*ron. I hope he is wrong but these are also picks against the spread so it means the Colts can win by 1 to 3 points and the Lions still won and covered.

Oh btw, Cam did get beat the hell up last night badly. I hate to admit that since I was so worked up and mad but yeah he got hit in the head too.

Oh and I think David picked the Saints to beat the Raiders, in his group they were only 1 point faves.

  8. It breaks my heart to learn that Miami Vice is going to unneeded reboot that has a 97% chance of being bad.... I'm so sorry Michael Mann, Don Johnson, Philip Michael Thomas, Edward James Olmos and Jan Hammer...You did not deserve this.

    1. teganslaw

      teganslaw

As a rule reboots are never as good as the original show. Hollywood seems to be running out of ideas, so they think that a reboot is in order. Most of them are unnecessary; it's best to leave well enough alone.

    2. Synthetic

NBC already screwed up some of their older series. Knight Rider and MacGyver were big letdowns.

Vin Disiel and Chris Morgan as executive producers of Fast and Furious are handling this. That's enough to tell me it's probably going to be terrible. I'd feel better if Michael Mann was involved since Vice really is his creation and without him, it never would've took off.

Locals in Miami have said that it's next to impossible to get filming rights in town anymore. The Rock and HBO were forced to move 'Ballers' out of state. Even Michael Mann struggled getting to shoot the Miami Vice film there 10 years ago. Dexter had issues there too during it's run.

The original show was 100% filmed in Miami 30 years ago when things were different. Good luck to NBC and whoever if they're going to film in Atlanta or L.A. and try to fool people...

Speaking of tragic......this is one of my personal favorite classical pieces but I didn't use it too long for skating since it was TOUGH. I only used it for 4 months and it was near the end before I retired and was trying the highest level in competitions. It's advanced calculus for figure skating music and I had to move and skate so fast with footwork/spins and elements I almost passed out once when I was done.

Starting at :35 is when the music gets tough.

I will not discuss the 2005 Steelers. I am still trying to forget that game vs. the Colts.

Although I think we can say maybe the Broncos best days are over for a while unless the D learns to fly and play offense too.

    4. 2006Coltsbestever

      2006Coltsbestever

Yeah the Broncos have a problem at QB no doubt. They have a Great Defense but I cant see Sanchez or Kaepernick leading them to a Repeat SB win. The 2000 Ravens perhaps had the best Defense of all-time. I would rank it higher than Denver's of last season. The 1985 Bears are in that discussion as well.

Grapes of Wrath may be the better film IMO. I agree with you, Steinbeck is great. I haven't read the novel of East of Eden but I might since I did enjoy the film.

East of Eden is a take on the old bible story Cain and Abel with a heavy focus on a father-son relationship. It's a decent film. I thought the emotional connections in the film really drove it since it focuses so heavily on the father and sons and their struggles with one another.

This old lady though, Jo Van Fleet definitely steals the show when she's on camera. I love it when she tells James Dean "it makes me mad thinking about a rrrrrranch." She was arguably even better in Cool Hand Luke.

I'm beginning to think Kerr's best talent is putting up with this A hole. When Kerr is gone, no one can contain Green's outbursts.

I think you are right, without Steve Kerr.......there is nobody to control Green. Green is being TERRIBLE. And honestly he was having a lousy game for the most part tonight. And I didn't watch it as closely but Green shoving Curry? lmao wth?

Green shoved Curry out the way to go yell at a ref during the 2nd quarter. It was when he had the technical foul and Utah went on a 22-9 run after that. He also cussed and yelled at Mike Brown.

Do not forget the Warriors have yet to play a 100% healthy team. Just like last year...Portland was missing a key player and Utah is banged up too. The Spurs will be banged up as well.

I notice GS does not defend the paint at all. Even worse now with Mike Brown coaching them. This makes me feel better about the Cavs chances, cause LeBron and Kyrie will attack the paint for sure. Durant is not the antidote for stopping LeBron. If anyone seriously believes that, they need to watch this video and then tell me how useful Durant looked against a good defense.

Tonight they went iso with Durant too, which if they do that against Cleveland or even San Antonio, they're not going to win.

The Heat with LeBron were in attack mode in this series. It was all attack. The Cavs are starting to play like this again. Attack, attack, attack. LeBron isn't scared of anyone.

When Durant gets exposed he becomes a turnover machine. It's seen in that game 5, but it was also seen last year when he and Westbrook accounted for 10 turnovers in less than two minutes vs Golden State in game 6. The reason people don't believe in Durant is because we've seen this time and time again.

      Quote

Comparing them to the bad boy Pistons is hilarious. lmao

That Pistons team would provoke Draymond Green so easily into a brawl and getting him suspended, it wouldn't even be funny. It would happen so fast, and I doubt Curry would survive a few games against them as fragile as he is.

I actually see Golden State compared to that team a lot and I don't get how...We saw last year how fragile and injury prone that team can be. The Pistons would knock Curry out in just two games.

The Warriors didn't look that great last night. They could've lost had it not been for that run they had. Happy though for Durant he can sit out while his star-studded team he's riding the coat tails of can win without him.

I am almost starting to hate him the most now over anyone else on the Warriors. He literally IS just riding their coat tails. There was too much pressure on him in OKC.......and he rarely ever delivered.

But, he has really been milking this stupid leg injury crap at times too even though it's been months. I mean even last year in the first round of the playoffs Curry got hurt but didn't even miss much time and he is frail as hell compared to Durant.

  18. LeBron is having his best season since his 2012-2013 peak with the Heat. His averages are right on par with that MVP season, just a few points off from scoring. Too bad this is the Cavs worst team since he returned, greatly diminishing the possibility of a repeat due to their horrible defense. If Westbrook don't win MVP with his god-like stats, than LeBron definitely deserves it over Harden.

  19. LeBron is set to dominate again this year

    https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/old-lebron-will-be-different-might-still-be-great/

This article is great. It touches on how his game has completely changed in the last few years and evolved to a more all-around level

    Quote

It’s no surprise that many of James’s most comparable players according to our CARMELO projection system — Hall of Fame talents such as Larry Bird, Julius Erving, Dwyane Wade and Scottie Pippen — also spent the majority of their careers through age 31 in the same all-around perimeter category as MJ and King James. A few of James’s top comps were classified in other groups — Charles Barkley, Karl Malone and Kevin Garnett were “versatile bigs,” essentially the big-man version of James’s do-it-all group (think of Barkley, KG and David Robinson as the archetypes), and Pippen spent a few years in the same “low-usage all-around” cluster as other efficient, passing-and-defense players like Alvin Robertson, Manu Ginobili and a young Magic Johnson. But James’s basketball DNA to this point has mostly been grounded in the tradition of the versatile perimeter prodigy.

Article is correct about his game changing and maturing in the past few years. I've went back and watched some old Miami Heat games and some with the Cavs during the 2007 run, and LeBron has really stepped up into that role as a team leader in the past few years. I think he finally was getting to this around 2013 when the Heat repeated. His game really changed that year and Miami had their formula down, but in year 2 with the Cavs, I like the chemistry of Cleveland a lot more than I did in Miami.

His assist and rebound stats are going to be great again this year like last year, as LeBron proved in the finals that he is the leader who gets all his guys involved on the court. The newer, older LeBron is a more all-around team leader than the LeBron's of the past like we seen in Miami and his early years with the Cavs.

Hoping we can see Cleveland repeat!

I will reply to all this tomorrow but I desperately need to get into the NBA more again with news. I just read about the Lakers recently a bit and how Ingram is adjusting to the pace of the NBA and has improved recently after a very slow preseason start and how Russell is taking over big time. Some Lakers fans said just in the last few preseason games Ingram looked to "get it" more since it does take time to adjust to the NBA pace and quickness.

Curry won't have the same type of season again probably because well......they only got one basketball on the court at once for that team. lmao Too many shooters IMO.......where is the versatility?

Sorry about your tooth but if this is another one VERY sorry. OMG.......well maybe you should rinse with warm water with some salt in it too. That is what I did after I had my wisdom teeth out and it helped. Warm water and salt btw can loosen up a bad tooth if you want it to come out. It's like how warm water in the shower/bath softens up skin......

Would rather give MVP to little Isaiah Thomas. Celtics are second in the east too while the Thunder are 7th in the West.

And yeah the Cavs will be better later. Keep an eye on the Raptors though too since the Celtics struggle with them as well. Had Celtics/Raptors on last night and the C's were up by 17 at one point but still ended up losing the game.

There was a Celtics game last week I didn't see where they played the Bulls and everyone went nuts on how jobbed the Celtics got at the end of the game. Bulls are 7th in the east I just seen, so Boston or Cleveland may get them in the first round of the playoffs.

Cleveland would be fine, but this is why I worry about Boston.

  22. Look what I found this morning - Roger Staubach's hail mary game vs the Vikings with the actual drive.

Amazing how many times this drive nearly kills them...The low snaps, and one of them is even fumbled, and Staubach has to run around under pressure.

The 4th and 17 play is amazing, and then right after, BOOM hail mary to Drew Pearson.

Dallas almost upset the Steelers in the SB a few weeks later....Of all the Steelers SB's, it's the first one against Dallas that is usually regarded as the best...This wildcard Dallas team was such big underdogs, and almost upset the Steelers. Amazing team.

Yeah that Ravens team was really Good. I am not so sure they wouldn't of won the SB had they got by us. They would've had HFA over the Pats. McNair had already made one SB. That game was a rare case where our Defense won the game and Peyton rode the D.

Manning had a rough game here and many will point to his stats as being ugly, but he did everything to get the win. I don't think it's fair to really talk about his ugly stats here as if it's negative. Favre used to have games like this often, where the stats would be ugly but all that matters is coming off with that win.

That Ravens D was #1 across the board that season. Many were saying "it's 2000 all over again". Most would also have assumed if you held our offense to zero TDs that we lose the game.

I personally loved this game since it showed we could win in different ways finally and in a hostile environment to boot.

I remember at the end of the game Manning did have a clutch third down conversion to Clark. And we ran the ball well to run out the clock instead of trying to play hero with the pass you know.....unlike the Falcons. lmao

      Quote

I liked how the Colts defense played in this game. The commentators constantly mention how bad their run defense is, and yet they focused on shutting down the run entirely.

Our run D was money that entire postseason. Most don't realize just how bad it was during the regular season, dead last and we gave up 375 rushing yards to the Jaguars in a game.

Just a really fun game in Baltimore, I remember not thinking we would ever lose the game either though while it was happening.

  23. Mark Kermode remembers Bill Paxton

    1. southwest1

      southwest1

My 2 favorite films that Bill stared in were "A Simple Plan" & "Trespass." In both films I mentioned Bill plays an ordinary guy [A feed mill supervisor & a firefighter] who is driven by volatile situations to cross lines he wouldn't otherwise cross.

I know most people will remember him from the blockbuster hit "Titanic." I detested that overhyped cinematic piece of romantic crap. Plus, it went on too darn long in duration. Does it really take over 2 hours to discuss a poor kid & a girl about to marry a rich dude she doesn't love? The boat collides with an iceberg, cracks in half, & passengers drown or die a slow death from hypothermia. There you have it. All the essential plot points in less than 2 minutes folks.

Man, I was stunned & bewildered over how many movie patrons loved the "Titanic" from the yr 1912. Whatever. The whole picture is sentimental bull...you know what in my estimation.

    2. southwest1

Thanks for the clip on Mr. Paxton Bogie. You're cool. I've got no qualms with you at all my friend. I just roll my eyes at theatre buffs who were moved by James Cameron "Titanic" feature presentation I guess. End Rant.

Bill did seem like a down to earth guy though & I'm sorry he died so suddenly so unexpectedly in the end.

  24. Merry Christmas Cleveland...happy you won something and won't be going winless.

After what I have seen about MJ lately in some videos and how much favoritism he got, he can go shove it at times IMO. I know that is like criticizing Jesus (I do that too btw) but I just don't care. Yes MJ was an all time great but RELAX already with the hero worship. He was a PRODUCT.

And for those who think I am a meanie burger, I am actually RAISING Peyton Manning on my all time list mentally now and maybe ahead of Brady since I am dead sick and tired of Tom Brady. I swear too Brady is on something........he is 39 years old and looks 26 out there. Peyton at least looked old when he was........old.

What really got me about Brady was his stupid hissy fits during the Ravens game weeks ago. Like he literally EXPLODED in fits of rage when the Ravens were meanies to him and played you know actual defense.

    3. 2006Coltsbestever

      2006Coltsbestever

@Jules, by the way I hated the Bulls and Jordan. So me defending him makes me sick haha. You guys think I hate LeBron, LeBron had nothing on how I hated Jordan. I couldn't stand the Bulls as they won every damn year and blocked the Pacers from winning in 1998, a series I felt like the Pacers got ripped off by the REFS in Game 7. Regarding Brady and Peyton, I think both are Top 5 QB's of all-time and really cant see how it can be argued that either aren't. Brady has 4 Rings as a starter, Peyton has 2 with 2 different teams as a starter. Peyton has 5 League MVP's and a SB MVP, Brady has 2 League MVP's and 3 SB MVP's. Peyton also is the all-time leader in TD's thrown and Yards Passing.

    4. 2006Coltsbestever

      2006Coltsbestever

My Top 5 all-time QB's list would look like this:

      1. Joe Montana - 4 SB wins as a starter, 2 League MVP's, 3 SB MVP's

      2. Johnny Unitas - 2 Championships in the 50's, set the standard

      3. Tom Brady - 4 SB wins as a starter, 2 League MVP's, 3 SB MVP's

      4. Peyton Manning - 2 SB wins as a starter, 5 League MVP's, 1 SB MVP

      5. John Elway - 2 SB wins as a starter, 1 League MVP, 1 SB MVP

Honorable mentions: Dan Marino/Brett Favre/Otto Graham

-I have tons of opinions that could support my Top 5 and Mentions. See you both know how much I hate the Pats and Tom Brady but I still have him rated 1 spot higher than Peyton. Main reason is, how Brady has performed in the Playoffs compared to Peyton. Brady was better on the biggest stages, much like Jordan and Magic was compared to LeBron. Having Belichick has helped Brady out though IMO and Brady isn't the GOAT. It's Joe Montana IMO and Unitas set the standards for all QB's back in the 50's and 60's so I have him 2nd. Unitas had over 40,000 Yards for his career and back then that was unheard of. He also won 2 Championships in the 50's before the SB era. Regarding Montana he was 4-0 in SB games and threw no INT's in those 4 games, he also had over 40,000 Yards for his career + 2 League MVP's and 3 SB MVP's. You guys have to remember back before the 90's, throwing for more than 40,000 Yards was a huge deal. Now days it's a top heavy passing league. Terry Bradshaw won 4 SB's as a starter as well but his Career Stats were suck city and IMO he played on teams that had some of the greatest Defenses of all-time which took a ton of pressure off of him trying to carry a team.

-Back to Brady, no way is he the GOAT. You cant lose to Eli twice in the SB when you are a heavy favorites, having said that other than those 2 blunders Brady has been magnificent on the big stage. Even he wins another SB I don't think I would put him over Montana or Unitas. I have Marino in my Honorable Mentions and he never won 1 but he carried teams/put up huge Stats and by the eye test everyone with common sense knows how great he was. He lost to Montana in the SB he made it too otherwise he would have a Ring. Favre is one of my other Honorable Mentions, he won 3 League MVP's in a row from 1995-1997 + he won a Ring as a starter and put up insane career Stats. He also was the Ironman of Football holding the record for most starts without missing a game. Otto Graham made it as well. He won several Championships before the SB era and came into the league before Unitas but he didn't change the game like Unitas did, Unitas set many standards and was clearly the better pure Passer between those 2.
