Weird video that is hard to understand...depending on how to look at it. The man is waiting for a date that is never going to show up...probably a lover that died or an old friend. Some how parallels with the young girl who wants her favorite band to show up yet knows they won't.

Interesting video. I see a parallel with grown up despair portrayed by the man against the youthful innocence of the young girl. Both are full of hope that someone is going to show up. But, neither will get it. The why part is up to interpretation but both long for it. And in the end we are all hopeless.....just waiting......for nothing. But, in the end all you can often do is laugh and live in the moment.

Great interpretation. it's a well done video.

  1. Grunge did not kill hair Metal: debunking the myth.

You've probably heard this myth your whole life how Grunge "killed hair metal" but I'm going to explain why that is a myth and more than anything a marketing creation to promote Grunge bands (specifically Nirvana).

Let's go back to the final years of the 80's and the early 90's. Hair Metal or "Pop Metal" or "Glam Metal" (whatever you want to call it) had just about run it's course in general...

By hair metal; this is a reference to bands such as Cinderella, Ratt, Poison, Warrant, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Loverboy, Honeymoon Suite, L.A. Guns and soooooooo many others.

At the height of the glam metal phase, most of the heavyweights of Metal who had been already established for some time and widely considered cornerstone bands of the genre eventually adapted to glam metal to sell more records. Judas Priest for instance released the album 'Turbo' 1986. Ozzy Osbourne also released a glam based album in that same year called 'The Ultimate Sin'. Unless you are a big fan of one or the other, these albums are mostly forgotten from their catalogs. 1986 was the height of glam rock, but it was beginning to fade out by 1990.

Going into the 1990's, most hair metal bands were left standing on their last leg and things did not look good for them; Poison was beginning to break up due to guitarist C.C. Deville's cocaine problems worsening over time, and Bret Michaels was beginning to develop the rock star ego or what is often called 'lead singer god complex'. Ratt was in trouble due to Robin Crosby's heroin addiction and more than anything, the band could never top their mega hit of 'Round and Round'. Warrant was getting sick after lead singer Jamie Lane had ate too much 'Cherry Pie' and the band lost it's minds, and using them as an example; most of these bands and the L.A. glam scene had become a caricature parody of their former selves.

There was also the underground "Thrash/Speed Metal" scene that began in the 80's, and bands like Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax arguably had something to do with this, cause they were beginning to peak in popularity going into the 90's.

My point here is, most of these bands were already on life support before Nirvana even came out and grunge was marketed to the forefront. There were various underground scenes that were beginning to take over and could've easily been picked up and marketed by the music industry. Kurt Cobain admitted before that he got most of his ideas from the Pixies and Sonic Youth, who were big in the underground grunge of the 80's (R.E.M. also was a big underground band in the 80's with that "indie" sound that grunge is associated with, more proof that Nirvana did not create grunge). But further note; these glam bands were about to fizzle out regardless due to all their problems.

Heavy Metal was still a force by the time Grunge came out; the 'Thrash' or 'Speed Metal' bands (Whatever you prefer to call them) of the 80's were beginning to enjoy great success in the mainstream: Metallica's self titled 'black' album sold millions of records and to this day is one of the highest selling albums in lists. In 1992, Megadeth's single 'Symphony of the Destruction' hit #2 on the Billboard 200 chart and the album 'Countdown to Extinction' is their highest selling record of that decade; Anthrax's album 'Sound of White Noise' debuted at #7 on the Billboard Top 200 albums (an album they made without their lead singer from the 80's). And of course, the last surviving L.A. scene glam band going into the 90's was Guns N Roses and they were still selling millions of records during the height of Grunge. In 1993, Guns N Roses released 'The Spaghetti Incident'. The album debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 charts. That is an album that is mostly forgotten about, but it hit #4 and sold millions upon it's initial release. GNR is also an example of how self-destructive the glam bands were going into the 90's with drug problems and feuds with band members, setting up the table for their own destruction.

In 1994, while Grunge was still the main force to be reckoned with, Motley Crue released a self titled album without singer Vince Neil that managed to peak at #7 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.

So no, Grunge and Nirvana did not outright kill Hair Metal. It was already dying by the time they came around.

["Record companies stopped developing bands and artists, and instead began to search for what would be an instant homerun with a debut album in sales. I blame Nirvana on that. Originally, selling around 150,000 was considered a great success and bands could make it and live comfortably with those numbers. After the explosive hit with these Grunge bands on just the debut album alone, the benchmark was raised beyond that, and if a band couldn't sell at least 200,000 copies, then the album was considered a failure."]

So true Bogie. Labels in the early 90's demanded success right out of the gate now. Instead of allowing bands to find their sound or niche over say 2 albums before the company expected growth from the group of a substantial nature. By that I mean, touring to find your loyal devoted audience meant more than radio station play & mainstream Billboard success.

If a band finds the right independent label that gives the artist time to perfect their sound, they've got a shot. But, most major labels view success now based solely on iTunes downloads over the 1st couple of months which doesn't foster creativity longterm.

["You mentioned Neil's solo effort 'Exposed'. I own a copy of this album. Been many, many years since I last listened to it, but I'm pretty sure that his guitar player on that album was Steve Stevens, who you may know for doing guitar work on Michael Jackson's 'Bad' album. It's been ages since I listened to it but I overall remember his guitar work being pretty good on the 'Exposed' record. Stevens was one of those working studio guitar players of the 80's who was always great on whatever he did.

I might dig out my copy of 'Exposed' and listen to it this coming week. Been many years since I last heard it, I think you may have just inspired me."]

Yes, I'm well versed in Steve Stevens riffs & fingering on guitar necks. He worked with Billy Idol too. Steve's solos meshed nicely with Vince Neil's voice as well. That Exposed record sounded more like Motley Crue-ish than Nikki Sixx & Tommy Lee did that yr which was released in 1993.

Favorite track on that album: You Can't Change Me. Spanish guitar vibe intro always appeals to me I guess. See..

["Iron Maiden released that god awful album 'No Prayer For The Dying' and practically became a joke of themselves (Holy Smoke!!!). Then they released 'Fear of the Dark' which I know the title track is widely popular (and seriously, the only good song on the whole record), but that album was even worse than No Prayer for the Dying. I don't think most people have listened to it all the way through to remember how bad it was...Then Bruce Dickinson quit the band, they got a new singer and released some albums in the 90's that no one remembers."]

I agree with everything you said about 'No Prayer For The Dying' an atrocious album indeed. My favorite studio album with Bruce & the boys is hands down 'Somewhere In Time' released in 1986 with classics like "Stranger In A Strange Land," Heaven Can Wait, & my sentimental favorite "Wasted Years." I never get tired of that track. Gotta hear it on guitar like pronto now. Checkout this woman known as Six string Kitty giving this song it's metal dues:

It's a travesty that Iron Maiden is still absent from the Rock & Roll HOF man.

I also have a soft spot for "Seventh Son Of The Seventh Son" too. One of the most challenging & creative percussion arrangements ever created.

We will be okay. I mean just have to hope for the best. Hoping is what Lebron teams is all about.......

Kyrie is locked in. He could barely talk after the game.

Kyrie DOES sort of now remind me of a young Kobe now. HOLY CRAP.  This was like young Kobe tonight.

Oh yeah, Cavs over Warriors in 6. lmao I won't change. It's going to be BRUTAL though. OMG it is.......Warriors have the starting lineup from hell.

But, I do think it's not impossible and it's quite possible the Warriors are the 2007 Patriots and Durant is Randy Moss.

Yeah they can get chippy but then again this is also playoff basketball at it's highest level.

It's going to be MUCH rougher in the finals. We have to face Draymond and Zaza, think about that and let it register. It's like going against two Nazi Guards. Kevin Love is going to have to be at the TOP of HIS GAME. He's the pretty talented 3 point shooting white guy and you know he is the one they will go after.

Since well they all go after Kevin Love.........

Boston actually plays a lot like the Warriors will against the Cavs with dirty big men and guards who can hit loads of 3's.

Well gee, no wonder NFL ratings are down. Who wants to watch the Jags-Titans throw down? lmao

Lakers have a brutal schedule of road games but they could be OK...They looked like a completely different team last night. They haven't passed the ball around like that in years. This could be the resurrection of the Showtime Lakers of the 80's, at least I hope. I greatly miss seeing that kind of effort and all around team work with an LA team. It's what we get from watching LeBron these days and the assist stats he puts up.

No problem Southwest, I forgot one picture though. The bottom of the ring has 7 jewels, white and red showcasing the 7 series (red in wins, white in losses). Absolutely beautiful rings, they really put a lot of work into it.

I like certain historical players on their teams (Bradshaw, Swann, Rod Woodson, Bill Cowher) but I hate that team so much, and I felt so bad for the Colts losing to them in 2005. Tecmo Superbowl which came out in 1991 is my favorite football game on Nintendo. It was the 2nd Tecmo game. That game had all the teams and full rosters where you could play seasons and the Computer AI was Great as well. I used to get with a couple of other friends and we would pick bad teams and play whole seasons over a whole weekend. The Colts and Patriots both stunk on that game so they were always fun teams to pick back then. Bills and Giants were awesome! I was the Bills and went undefeated with them one season and won the SB but it wasn't easy, the computer gave me fits during that Playoff run. Oilers were really Good too with Moon on that game. It was basically the 1990 teams so it was the season Bills/Giants made the SB. I went undefeated with the Oilers as well at 16-0 but lost in the Playoffs.

I think I was the main one on here who believed the Colts would be 7-9 this year....I put them on level with the Saints, cause it's pretty much the same thing. You have a quarterback and a receiver who are pretty much the entire offense, and then no defense just like us, and a vastly improving bad division. The Saints time is long gone. Tampa Bay is the young team of the South to take over, just as Tennessee is gearing up to become a sledgehammer in the future. Atlanta and Carolina will always be the mediocre teams that have winning seasons from time to time.

Yeah you were the main one who said 7-9. lmao  You may be one game off though but to be honest......we do share a lot of similarities with the Saints.

After last year, I don't think I'll ever stop being bitter, since Peyton played the absolute worst statistical season of a SB winning quarterback and had a roided up, dirty defense bail him out every step of the way. If the Saints defense did half of the stuff Denver gets away with, you'd never stop hearing about "bounties". Brees is still playing at a high level, as did Favre at 40 years old. But I don't have much faith in the Saints management to make one final run, but it's what I would want. Forget the records, I want a second ring.

Titans traded their #1 pick last year to the stupid Rams who wasted it on Goff who looked like he was going to be a bust after preseason. I think the Titans are dangerous cause they're building a young team through the draft and now that Adams has kicked the bucket, the management knows what it's doing now.

I want Tennessee in the playoffs. If we get the Dolphins, Steelers, and Titans in the playoffs, already with NE, Oakland and K.C, we'll get a full 1970's AFC playoff picture. The Titans are the old Oilers after all. Would be so cool to have all those old classic teams in the playoffs.

Brees is still playing at a high level, as did Favre at 40 years old. But I don't have much faith in the Saints management to make one final run, but it's what I would want. Forget the records, I want a second ring.

Maybe next year, you never know. The NFC South loves to switch places. I am not sold as much on the Bucs as you are right now. I just am not. Falcons probably right now win the South unless something major happens, they are getting Julio Jones back this weekend too. But, the Falcons are very low odds likely to make a big playoff run.

The Saints need to fix special teams and get some secondary help IMO.

Fixing special teams isn't even rocket science either, I don't see why they can't fix that before next year unless they are too arrogant to do so.

Bogie showed me a good long video about the zone defense and comparing it to the old era.

I have to say after seeing this video, I think even more highly now of guys like Lebron and Kobe then ever before if that was even possible for me.

    3. 2006Coltsbestever

      2006Coltsbestever

Yeah throughout most of the Kobe era you could play Zone Defense which means doubling and tripling teaming a player was legal. Back when Jordan played in his prime you could only double or triple team for a couple of seconds, any longer it was considered Illegal Defense and a Technical Foul. The NBA was more physical when Jordan, Magic, and Bird played in their prime years but I think it has been tougher for a player to dominate a game pretty much throughout the Kobe era because of Zone being allowed. Regarding the Warriors, them signing Durant isn't fair. They have great enough Coaching IMO to avoid chemistry issues, Kerr will figure it out. Curry's minutes will be watched this upcoming season as well because they now have Durant. The Spurs are really the only team that maybe can give them a scare in the West IMO. Clippers choke every season and cant even get out of the 1st Round most of the time and the Blazers aren't ready for the bigtime. You cant hate the Warriors all you want like I do the Patriots but unfortunately they will be great again.

    4. Jules

      Jules

I always knew about the rule changes on defense, but seeing direct comparisons from now to then was kinda mind boggling to me. I mean in a video with it all broken down so easily to see.

It was more physical then, but I think I might prefer it now since it has a more fluid pace with more passing and just seems more like you have to think on the court and not just plow around.

Kobe IMO might be the best vs. the zone defense we have seen, maybe. There are several out there but he really peaked in that era. The Lakers didn't seem to need Shaq as much after the rule changes if you ask me and the dominant big man became more neutralized a bit.

And after thinking about this, with the rule changes......it is tough to compare now to then with eras too.

Oh I know the Warriors won't go away lol. I just am curious to see how they gel and also how this all kinda operates, there is only one ball on the court. lmao  Curry has to stay healthy too but then again I still think they were slightly worried about his injuries too and feel they need more scoring at times.

People forget too the Durant contract I think is only two years and I think he can even leave after a year if something happened.

lmao I hate the Grateful Dead so much. They are the most overrated band of all time. #1, always have been, always will be.....BUT it's wrong to not say some positive things about Jerry Garcia as a guitar player and song writer. Dude was a beast on the pedal steel and credit has to be given with his disadvantage not having a middle finger. Jerry Garcia was a great guitar player, he definitely deserves praise and especially for what a monster he was with the pedal steel. But I still don't care for the Grateful Dead.

The Patriots will be the team to beat until Brady and Belichick retire, they really always have been since 2001 after they won their first SB. That team could have 10 SB Titles had it not been for Eli's Giants stopping them twice and 3 of Peyton's teams stopping them. I wonder if Falcons fans are ready to jump off a cliff yet? Up 25 points and cant close, SB Rings don't grow on trees. I am not sure what is worse, the way Seattle lost 2 years ago or the way the Falcons lost.

  22. A friend emailed me this over the weekend and I thought of you after I read it, since I know you love Michael Mann's work. This is one of the best analysis I've read on the internet detailing his work.

A 4 article rundown of Michael Mann's work.

    https://flickeringscreen.net/2009/08/10/michael-mann-week/

Here, he goes through all of his films and the central themes of his doppleganger characters, masculinity, and isolation. The other articles get into small details like the women in his films, the guns (and a great shoutout to the 'Bren Ten' model that was featured in MV), and a very good article breaking down the themes in Collateral and why that film is a msterpiece.

    https://flickeringscreen.net/2009/08/11/1420/

Glad he gave props to Manhunter, that's the forgotten gem of Mann's filmography. i re-watched it over the summer after going through a Miami Vice binge. It's incredibly stylistic, and it puts the remake 'Red Dragon' to complete shame...I liked Thief too, he is right that it could almost pass like a gritty episode of Vice back in it's run.

"The writer breaks down how he uses doppleganger characters, as being two sides of the same coin. I never looked at it that way, but he is correct."

I'm not sure how to directly quote words in status updates like you & Jules know how to do. But, that doppleganger component is definitely a trademark feature of Mann's film work. Cops, thiefs, & mercenaries don't usually have mutual respect for what the other one does. It's about being thorough, taking pride in your profession, & finding another guy on an equal footing that sees what most people don't even notice or respect about their craft even if the hero & villain are at opposite sides of the spectrum. It's a fine blurry line between cop & bankroller; good taxi samaritan & hired killer; money launderer & DEA enforcer.

What fascinates about Mann is that he knows that there is evil & goodness in everybody & not everybody is a sinner or saint to their core. Anybody is capable of crossing over & becoming the very thing they fought against for yrs. Mann knows the world isn't black & white but very shades of grey. Drug dealers aren't all bad. They are family men, business men, & they value loyalty & profit above all else.

There's a line in Miami Vice where Tubbs says to Crockett: "I will never doubt you. There's deep uncover & there's which end is up." Where is your head at right now partner? Crockett looks at him like he's about to fall & he's scared because he loves his money launderer mark. He doesn't know how to climb out, drop the act, or if he really wants to. The audience knows he could cross over & be a valuable cocaine asset if he decided to stop working for the LAPD right now.

And even in Heat where DeNiro shakes Pacino's hand before he dies near those airport runways, both guys are sad & bummed out because they both respected how smart, savvy, & committed the other one was. Nothing else can satisfy that itch---Not money, not women, not domestication.

    3. southwest1

      southwest1

"Mann is a genius, I really wish he was still making movies. His films are always prolific."

Absolutely right Bogie! Mann is a genius & you often have to see his films about 3 or 4 times to really comprehend how brilliant he truly is. Wait. Is Micheal really retired from filmmaking? Darn it. Maybe, he's just very selective about his projects & only directs pictures about once every 4 yrs or something. Mann has earned that right. To be picky about what films he puts his seal of approval on. He's right up there with Clint Eastwood in fame & clout to me meaning Mann can do whatever the hades he wants.

I have to give you credit too Bogie because without your astute recommendation regarding James Caan I never would have seen "Thief" or appreciated the Tangerine Dream soundtrack. Thank you so much. I sincerely mean that no hyperbole or exaggeration there I swear.

You're a very good next level music & film critic too. I'm not kidding. You know your stuff.

    4. southwest1

      southwest1

I read that review on how Mann treats women in his films as some sort of extension on male prowess, bravery, & masculinity. The implication being that women are only present to satisfy men's urges as central characters. I don't know if I agree with that conclusion personally. Here's why...

Let's look at DeNiro's love interest Eady played by Amy Brenneman in 'Heat.' She's a shy graphic designer originally from Minnesota who now works in an LA bookstore. She spots Bob reading a book about metals & fracturing them & she strikes about a conversation with him. He blows her off initially, then apologizes, & the 2 of them eventually sleep together.

For the 1st time in life, Bob lets his guard down & sees the gentle sweetness in her. I think Eady appreciates Bob's reserved & quiet demeanor too which makes them a perfect match. Eventually, Bob tells Eady what he really does for a living & he gives her cash & the opportunity to stay or to leave him free & clear. He doesn't hit her, kill her, demean her, or humiliate her. He makes the decision completely hers & her's alone.

Now, you will remember in his conversation with Pacino at the restaurant, DeNiro says he has a woman but he would abandon her in an instant if the heat go too intense & he was forced to run because Al was hot on his tail.

DeNiro eventually does this very thing shooting a loose end guy who can ID him that the LAPD has flipped & put into protective custody forcing him to leave Eady alone in his car as Al chases him with a shotgun.

I actually view Bob's abandonment of his girlfriend as a favor & kind gesture on his part. Bob doesn't want her to ruin her life by seeing her man get gunned down & become a criminal's widow. Bob wants her to have a chance at a clean, wholesome life away from bullets, explosions, & prison. Besides, Eady can probably get her bookstore job back on Monday anyway right considering she just resigned 1 day ago IMO.

Robert looks at Amy Brenneman & his hand gesture toward the car tells her to remain in the car for her own safety. He loved her that much. Did he transfer any funds into her bank account to make her life easier? Who knows. Some critics might claim that DeNiro's bank robbery lifestyle turned Amy's bearings upside down, which might be considered selfish. However, Bob was trying to protect her from physical harm & incarceration as an accomplice since Pacino has no idea who Bob's woman is or what she even looks like.

The small talk banter between Chewy & Han after the wookie is released from confinement is awesome like 2 best friends who pretend to get on each other nerves but would do anything to save the other 1 if he had to.

That's why I love that scene in Empire Strikes Back just before Han is frozen in carbonite . A lot of people focus on Solo's line to Leah "I know" regarding her love for Han, which is funny. However, what resonates with me in that scene is Han telling Chewy "You have to take care of the Princess now. There will be another time [when we fight back] okay."

Han the macho guy shares a brief tender moment with Chewbacca just before handcuffs get placed on him where the audience can feel the devotion Solo has to Chewy that goes deeper than a best friend. It's a brotherhood man & both Han & Chewy would do anything to protect the other one. When Chewy moans after Han is frozen, we feel his pain as an audience.

Your Star Wars fan film briefly tapped into that devotion to the other one. When Han & Chewy are walking off saying "lets go get the Millennium Falcon back" I laughed.

Chewy isn't just some loyal sidekick or pet. He's family & a brother from another mother to Solo. He's an equal in Han's eyes. Although Solo would never say it out loud, Chewy means more to him than loot, money, adventure, loose women, his ship, or his own safety.

Not enough writers focus their attention on the dynamic between Han Solo & Chewbacca in my estimation.

When I seen this video, I was so impressed with the actor playing Han. He nails the body language, the facial expression, the snarky smart butt style of his speech and pretty much everything. There is a true sense of love for the character and Star Wars in general within that video.

I especially love when he points his finger and says "now, we made a deal!" That is sooooooo Harrison Ford. The actor playing him in this video definitely did his home work and studied that stuff to nail it down to a T.

In love with Star Wars right now, I feel like my childhood has been resurrected and with the erasing of the terrible prequels. Rogue One was awesome, it was so much better than the Force Awakens.
