So Who We Going To Ride For As Backup For AR Next Season
Shive replied to Boss7894's topic in Colts Football
If we don't keep Minshew, I'd love to bring in Tyrod Taylor. Great veteran presence, has starting experience and can steady the ship if need be, and is more in the mold of AR than Minshew so there wouldn't be as much of a schematic shift if he's needed. -
He's an absolute liability in coverage and has had a ton of missed tackles (despite leading the league in tackles). I wouldn't draft 2 LBs though, just one. Assuming he passes medicals, Payton Wilson would be an absolute monster LB for us. Amazing in coverage, great in the run game, but can be a little too overaggressive at times. As I mentioned above, the pure stats don't tell the whole story, as Franklin has shown to miss a lot of tackles.

The only issue I have with that is that Bradley's history says that even when he has had elite talent in the secondary, he hasn't done that.

Ryan Kelly wants it known, he’s NOT retiring
Shive replied to GoColts8818's topic in Colts Football
While I'm glad to hear that, I'd still draft Jackson Powers-Johnson (Oregon) as his heir-apparent. He's got LG & RG flexibility as well, so at a minimum would be solid depth until Kelly does end up retiring. -
I'm not entirely convinced that's what was being said. If it's something that's not in doubt, Steichen doesn't have a problem saying it. When there's not 100% certainty, he always sidesteps. I think there's a solid chance Gus is back, but I don't think his comments today were any sort of vote of confidence. Daboll just said this morning that he expected Kafka and Martindale to stay, while it was just announced that Martindale resigned. Coaches will say the safe, non-committal answer when they aren't sure. I'm not sure if having Myles Garrett on our DL would make a whole world of difference when our typically soft coverage allows some of the quickest time to throws in the league. I definitely think we could improve our pass rush, but I think the biggest improvement would be on the schematic side with our coverages and playing more press. I want to believe that we played less press due to the young secondary, but Gus' history says that that's just not his style anyhow. I saw a statistic somewhere that essentially said that we had the lowest blitzing rate on 1st and 2nd downs, but one of the highest on 3rd down. Not only do we not blitz often, but when we do, it's almost entirely on 3rd down, which goes back to Gus' lack of innovation and creativity. 100%

Kind of wild that the Jags ended up with 4th and 2 with the game on the line, with an inaccurate throw ending their postseason hopes...just like us.

I would have liked a backup like Tyrod Taylor (slight bias since he's from where I live), but with knowing we'll have AR at the helm next season, it would make sense to bring in a backup that has a similar skillset.

I don't know how to feel about Pierce since Minshew hardly looked his way when he was wide open, but I agree that he's limited in what he offers at this point. I wouldn't cut him by any means, but I also wouldn't pass up the opportunity to draft his replacement either.

We need a turnover really bad right now....

I'm really getting tired of Baker's terrible tackling. It tends to look like he doesn't want to initiate any kind of contact and that doesn't work for me.
-
We needed to tie in that situation. a 4th down conversion was really iffy and Stroud is a QB that you don't want to give the ball back to down 3.
-
We have to stop running out of that exact alignment/motion. At this point it's telegraphing the run and they've caught on. We need to pass out of that to catch them off guard.
-
Absolutely. I hope to see a challenge when we get back from commercials. 100%. He had absolute control on how and where to hit Pittman. He should be gone.

Eagles waive Derek Barnett
Shive replied to Zoltan's topic in NFL Draft, Scouting, and Free Agent Talk
Yea i just never saw anything on his tape that made me think he would excel in the NFL as a pass rusher. Sometimes pure stats in college aren't true indicators of success in the NFL. Sure he broke Reggie White's sack record, but how did he do it and against whom? Personally, I was happy to see him get picked ahead of us, because I didn't want to draft him and it looks like my gut was right on that one. -
I'm not sure if the lack of deep shots was due to AP being able to get open deep or that it just wasn't in the gameplan. It seemed like they were starting AR out with simple, short/intermediate gameplans, so I think it may have been on purpose and not just because we're lacking a deep threat. We've seen AP be wide open downfield all season and Minshew hardly ever see him. Yea, no chance Nabers is available anywhere near where we pick. He's going top 10 barring any significant injury between now and the draft. Personally, I'm really liking Emeka Egbuka if he declares and if he falls to us. I took him in the 1st in my first mock draft and even though he's been primarily slot at OSU, I think he can be a starter on the outside. He's got decent size, very fast, fantastic route runner that creates separation, and good with the ball in his hands.

I really hope CB doesn't ride the hype with Franklin. He's amassed a lot of tackles this year, but he's been a liability in coverage and has an egregious amount of key missed tackles. I like Franklin as a guy, but I'm not comfortable giving him a big contract like he'll want. Okereke is the one that got away.
-
Exactly. I think he has the skillset to do well on the outside and make a similar move.

Franklin has been really bad today. He's missed so many tackles... -

We've run a handful of them. They just haven't been successful. -

They really do. Minshew needs to get into a rhythm. -

I've noticed that. It looks like he's off timing, then has tried to fire it in to make up for it, but the WR isn't ready for the pass when it's getting there. All in line with him panicking when there's no pressure. -

That's one of my favorites on 4th and short. -

I don't doubt it, but filling the game threads with toxic negativity gets old. -

We've seen Sermon in on spot duty, but not sure about Goodson.
