Pierce hasn't really dealt with injuries and in year 2, he avg'd 30 yds/game, playing 95% of the snaps with Gardner Minshew.

I think AR's arm strength could help Pierce get a few more shots downfield, but I also don't think it's going to suddenly unlock him as a good WR (you didn't say this, but it's something I hear often on Colts Twitter and content).

I think that notion is due to how often Pierce got open deep and Minshew either didn't see him or knew he couldn't get the ball to him. I think teams may adjust how they play us with AR at QB and respect the deep ball a bit more, but I still expect Pierce to take a step forward production-wise this next season.

This mock targets supporting AR while getting help on defense.

-Bowers is a generational talent (according to almost everyone) you have to take if he is there.

-Beebe is considered one of the best, if not THE best G in draft and is an immediate upgrade over any G on our roster other than Q.

-Wilson is the coverage LB to spy on the receiving RBs in our division.

-Smith is an athletic beast of a DT, looking toward future.

-Demerson is a rangy FS, backup now, possible starter in future

-Limmer is Kelly's replacement in a year or 2

-Coker is a WR with size and good hands, battle AP for reps

    -Richardson is backup CB

-Reiman is another athletic TE, picked him up due to his RAS & the possiblility that we lose both MAC & Ogletree

    15. Brock BowersTE Georgia

    Height: 6 - 3 |Weight: 243 lbs |RAS: N/A

    Strengths

    - Size/speed anomaly with the instant burst and speed to warp tackling angles

    - Energized athlete with rapid foot speed, a full release package, and stem and zone IQ

    - Constant leg churn and fighter's mentality makes him near-impossible to bring down

    - Can snare high-difficulty throws in-stride with rare body control and contortion ability

    - Brings ultra-reliable hand-eye coordination and hand strength, even on contested balls

    - Physical, assignment-sound blocker whose profile lends him usage versatility in space

    Weaknesses

    - Frame, while dense and compact, is around average mass for a tight end

    - Hips can be a bit stiff when redirecting, limiting range on 90-degree transitions

    - Route tree, while expansive, can use more efficient plant-and-drive technique

    - Doesn’t have the high-end mass or play strength to be a consistent in-line blocker

    54. Cooper BeebeOG Kansas State

    Height: 6 - 3 |Weight: 322 lbs |RAS: 9.3

    Strengths

    - Hyper-dense and well-leveraged lineman with elite mass and physicality

    - Has great burst and range when he’s able to pull and attack defenders in space

    - Squatty, heavy-handed blocker who easily bends his knees and stays square

    - Can plow run defenders with power, and shock rushers with forceful punches

    - Day 1 position flex lineman with experience at both guard and tackle spots

    - High-effort, tough-as-nails blocker who plays to the whistle and punishes defenders

    Weaknesses

    - Has below average arm length, which can limit his reach and cause lurches

    - Naturally, with his densely built frame, can be a bit stiff when recovering hip leverage

    - Occasionally drifts upright in pass protection and exposes his torso to power

    - On occasion, can be more patient and proactive with his independent hand usage

    82. Payton WilsonLB NC State

    Height: 6 - 3 |Weight: 233 lbs |RAS: 9.81

    Strengths

    - Has hyper-elite explosiveness and long speed and can cover absurd amounts of ground

    - Twitched-up support LB who uses abrupt micro-movements to sift through congestion

    - Contact tackler who can encase runners with his frame, using leg churn to drive force

    - Alert coverage LB with great blind spot IQ, spatial awareness, and hip leverage

    - High-motor defender who is legitimately always around the football

    Weaknesses

    - Has a lean and narrow frame with below-average length

    - Lack of mass and inability to halt momentum allows runners to finish

    - Can still improve hand precision on swats and rip moves as a pass rusher

    - Has torn his ACL twice and suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in 2021

    - Will be a 24-year-old rookie at the start of the 2024 season

    117. Maason SmithDT LSU

    Height: 6 - 5 |Weight: 306 lbs |RAS: 8.99

Despite not making it through his first game as a true sophomore, the LSU Tigers defensive tackle remains one of the most heralded NFL Draft prospects in the 2024 cycle. His frame may be the most frightening since Shawn Oakman, and his game resembles Stephon Tuitt and David Irving. His freakish athleticism paired with improved hands and a little experience could secure him a top-10 selection come April. - Dalton Miller

    151. Dadrion Taylor-DemersonS Texas Tech

    Height: 5 - 10 |Weight: 197 lbs |RAS: 8.74

    Strengths

    - Compact, low-to-the-ground defender who packs a lot of mass inside his frame

    - Energized mover with a smooth pedal who can make swift transitions on triggers.

    - Has shown he can throttle and swivel on his pedal to maintain leverage in space

    - Has near-elite playmaking and pursuit range and can swiftly undercut deep passes

    - Brings combative energy in all phases and can blast passes loose at the catch point

    - Not only willing but eager to engage blocks and impose physicality in run support

    Weaknesses

    - Has below average size for a safety and only has average length and reach

    - With size limitations, can be more easily moved off his spot in press-man coverage

    - Occasionally plays too tall and crosses his feet on his pedal, which can delay transitions

    - On occasion, throws himself into contact and fails to wrap up runners properly

    155. Beaux LimmerOC Arkansas

    Height: 6 - 4 |Weight: 302 lbs |RAS: 9.83

    191. Jalen CokerWR Holy Cross

    Height: 6 - 1 |Weight: 208 lbs |RAS: 8.49

    234. DeCamerion RichardsonCB Mississippi State

    Height: 6 - 2 |Weight: 188 lbs |RAS: 9.67

    243. Tip ReimanTE Illinois

    Height: 6 - 4 |Weight: 271 lbs |RAS: 9.92

I've seen someone describe Maason Smith as someone that looks like a freak DT on the field that has no idea what he's doing. He's definitely a very high ceiling guy, but also a basement level floor. He's most likely a moldable prospect that will need a few years of development before you'd expect him to contribute at all.

I think it would still be good to interview and assess. With Leaders like MPJ and guys like AP in a room ran by Reggie Wayne IF he checks out and has grown I wouldn't mind. We don't have to have a team full of choir boys and plus look at how the great 88 was for us even with some allegations.....  Even Bobby Okereke had a shady past, these are young people and it's tough we judge these men for things they do in high school or mistakes they make in college and don't have the same judgement for our doctors, lawyers and other members of society who actually play a key role.... outside of entertainment

I'm not a fan of his lack of ability to control his emotions and lash out at people, because that's not just "hanging around the wrong people", that's a legitimate mental health concern. This kid has been in the doghouse of 2 elite college programs. I don't see a guy with these types of red flags suddenly not having these issues when he's handed more money than he's ever had and less structure in his everyday life.

    - 2 YAC-centric pass catchers in Bowers and Washington.

    - Playmaking coverage LB.

    - Doubled up on athletic, rangy FSs with DTD and Perry (who we had in for a top 30 visit).

    - Kyree Jackson is a high upside outside CB and Hardy is a fast, athletic nickel CB (backup for Moore) with strong ST value.

    - Brennan Jackson is a high upside edge rusher that just needs more development at this point, but has the build and athleticism Ballard looks for.

If his character checks out then he could be a steal… I’m not sure what all things people have talked about with is character concerns. Just know it comes up a lot when people talk about him. I figured I’d take time to look into it if we picked him.

I highly doubt it does. He has the standout moments like hitting the female Vols fan, but he was in the doghouse with 2 separate coaching staffs and frequently missed assignments on the field. Based on the musings about him I've read, he seems like naturally gifted WR that hasn't lived up to his potential because he's already a diva and on top of that has anger management issues (Bama sent him to anger management counseling).

Personally, I think there's a lot of talented WRs in this draft that we could get besides Burton.

We are good at SS now, Blackmon is a veteran starter in that role and I think Cross can play it well too.  Nick is still just 22 and is trending up.

I think Cross is really only a SS. He's fast, but he's a linear athlete and doesn't have the lateral agility to be a rangy FS. I still like him as a 3rd safety in certain sub-packages.

I can live with having Jags at FS but we still need CBs.  I dont care what scheme you run you cant be as weak at corner as we are, teams will exploit the matchups

Honestly, I think most of our coverage issues came from the FS spot where the CB would hand off the receiver like they should, but the FS didn't pick them up. I'd prefer an upgrade at FS.

Ballard wasn’t afraid to go after Hunter.  Same age as Reddick and his contract is more than Reddick.  29 might be too old for you but not for Ballard.  Grover is 30.  He didn’t do too bad either.

@Indeee Hunter is also 6'5" 263lbs, while Reddick is 6'1" 240lbs, so Reddick may have not been seen as a schematic fit.

He's about the same size as Ngakoue, who was a solid pass rusher, but bad against the run. Reddick graded out around 63 in the run last season, Ngakoue's Indy season was around 45, so Reddick wasn't as bad, but Hunter was in the 80s last season, so Hunter is a much better fit from a size and overall productivity standpoint.

Again, I like Reddick, but I can see why we may not have pursued him like we did Hunter.

In 2026 that could become a second if he plays 68% of the snaps, but who cares. I mean we couldn't offer that?

Reddick is hands down better than what we currently have in the rush department.

    Seriously, this is absurd.

He's also requiring a new contract as well, which may have kept us out of it if the number is too high.

Reddick is also a bit undersized for what we like to run on our DL, so I doubt he was on the radar. For the record, he was one of "my guys" in that draft class and I wanted to take him in the 1st, so I don't disagree that he would be nice to bring in.

There are quite a few articles on the internet that say he may transition to safety in the NFL.

    Interesting reads

He could, but I think he's way more athletic than people give him credit for and projects way better as CB. Definitely could be a good safety, but I think if we drafted him, he fits well as a boundary corner for us.

I know you're joking, but I hope they do sign an older vet for a year.  They young guys have so little experience, they need guidance.  I was hoping it would have been GIlly or Nelson but there's no noise there.  I think Gilmore may be headed back to Carolina.

I'd rather sign a veteran than spend the first pick on a CB.  It's a crap shoot and we haven't had the best luck.  JuJu has yet to prove himself.

I think we need to sign a vet, but Jackson isn't it. Age and his dirty playstyle are non-starters for me.

JuJu definitely flashed pretty well in the limited games we saw him in. If he's healthy, I think he'll be a solid CB for us.

I'm not buying the hype on Mitchell until he starts facing NFL talent.  The MAC isn't exactly a hotbed for WRs.

He dominated every WR at the Senior Bowl, specifically in drills that heavily skew towards WRs, often using techniques he was just really learning in the pro-bowl practices (mainly press man techniques). He dominated in the MAC and dominated at Senior Bowl practices, and with his athletic traits, he projects very well to the NFL. I see him being a dominant CB in the near future. I don't necessarily want to take a CB at 15, but I wouldn't be mad if we took Mitchell.

"Though Ballard didn’t admit it, ESPN’s Stephen Holder reported the Colts offered more money to defensive end Danielle Hunter before he signed a two-year, $49 million (with $48 million guaranteed) with the Houston Texans."

If money was close I'm sure he makes more in Houston than he would've with Colts with No state tax in Texas.

Plus he's from Katy, TX, which is just outside of Houston, so he's also moving back home.

I don’t get why the Colts don’t also restructure contracts to help with Cap space.

I think it's an option if they need to clear space to sign another FA or 2, but you don't want to do it if you can help it. All it usually does is push the cap hit to later years, which is what we saw with the Chargers where they had to shed vet contracts that they had restructured. Depending on how you structure things, like maybe extending Buckner, can definitely help though.

Never said that your post said "hey the Colts are going to sign Simmons."  But whatever... you're just too intelligent for me to follow , so I'll give it up.

He was commenting on the hypocrisy of some fans that are upset we didn't trade for/sign Sneed, but when someone mentions another FA, they say we can't afford them, despite the fact that Sneed would have cost 3-4x what that FA would have cost.

Richardson on IR has nothing to do with this team being 30th in the league in points allowed.  Having blind faith in a corner who was united in college and came into the nfl injured. A guy who won’t be ready who was undrafted and a 7th round pick. Of let’s not forget Baker is still on the team.

@ColtStrong2013 summed it up pretty well already. I remember multiple games last season where the offense couldn't move the ball at all and were consistently punting from deep in our own territory, giving the other team fantastic field position. Couple that with Minshew's turnovers that gave the other team amazing field position and the fact that the defense was exhausted from the constant 3 & outs, and you get a defense that gives up a lot of points.

You're getting fixated on a specific statistic and completely ignoring the interconnectivity of all phases of the game.

I don't disagree that we should bring in vet FAs at CB and S, but I know there's still some good options out there that we could still bring in. Based on Ballard's comments, I don't expect a vet at CB like Howard or White that will expect to start from day 1, because that contradicts his approach at CB to give the young CBs time to develop.

He is not a much lesser CB than Jaylon Johnson. This is complete garbage. He was a top 5 CB. Just because McKenzie was slightly better doesn't mean he was bad. Dumb logic. Sneed was absolutely worth it for that price. Fits perfectly in our scheme as a Zone corner.

Sneed isn't bad by any means, but he's not on Johnson's level and should be paid like he is. I vehemently disagree that he's a top 5 CB.

This might be off the wall. Do you guys think irsays illnsss and Hospitalization could of played in the lack of moves?

I don't think it did at all. This offseason is pretty consistent with prior offseasons, other than the number or priority resignings we had. Ballard is nothing if not consistent in his approach and every year people think he's going to do a 180 and sign their wishlist of FAs, which just isn't realistic.

Being  forced to take a corner at 15 after taking 3 of them last year in the draft is such a joke. That 15th pick should be for an explosive offensive weapon.

If we signed Justin Simmons and one of Witherspoon/Howard/Gilmore, then drafted a CB in the 2nd or 3rd, would you be content?

    1 minute ago, Yoshinator said:

I think we have to go CB first round and WR second round at this point. Play the strengths of the draft. Go Safety third round.

At this point, it'll depend on if we sign anyone else in between now and the draft. It'll also depend on who is there at 15 when we get on the clock. WR and CB have some solid depth, but safety is pretty terrible this year.

  15. Just now, Yoshinator said:

I'm late to the party. Officially done with Ballard now. I'm actively rooting for his firing. Perfectly reasonable from a draft-pick perspective and cap price to pay for him. Don't care about the guaranteed money. You can cut Cox and restructure a couple contracts to open up space.

He needs to go soon. I hope there's a petition to fire Ballard that Colts fans can sign and a twitter hashtag  #fire ballard on twitter. He is killing this team. Bottom line now, if I don't like the draft, I'm not watching any Colts games this year. No reason we couldn't get Sneed when we were in on him for that price.

It's less about can you and more about should you. This is the definition of paying A money to a B player, which Ballard has said multiple times before he won't do. Sneed got $10.5M more guaranteed money than any CB in NFL history. A 27 year old CB with chronic knee issues, that wasn't the best CB on the Chiefs, wasn't a pro-bowler, and was never an all-pro. Why should that player get paid as one of the top CBs in the league with more guaranteed money than any CB has ever been paid before?

Jaylon Johnson's contract was expensive, but he was worth it. He was the top rated CB based on PFF, was a pro bowler, and an all-pro. He was largely considered the best CB in the league. You're saying it's a good idea to give the same contract with more guaranteed to a much lesser CB like Sneed?

You don’t need to play that much. Then sign Davis to be the starter and let Stewart go. You can’t pay everyone. Roster building has to start with paying for premium positions.  Ballards roster building is flawed.

Davis is a $5m cap hit this year. His signing didn't prevent us from making other moves and we saw last season how god awful our depth at 1T was. It was a good move for a guy that has a solid floor as a good run defender and still has quite a bit of upside.

Colds needed at least a FS and a vet CB. I could live letting cross play SS. It’s been a total failure. This CB room will be just like last year when everyone gets hurt again . Then everyone will blame the dline.

    Relax GIF

There's still a few solid CBs out there and now that the Sneed log jam is done, we should see some movement. I see us bringing in a vet CB to compete (like an Ahkello Witherspoon) and a bit more expensive of a Safety like Simmons, Diggs, or resigning Blackmon.

Colts don’t have one proven CB. Their safety group is a mess. Titans got Ridley and now add sneed. Colts have sat stagnant. It’s embarrassing.

That’s right around what I was expecting.  The market is what it is.  Ballard decided not to pay it.  Let’s hope he doesn’t pick off AR a few times.

He got the same contact amount as Jaylon Johnson, with more guaranteed (55M vs $48M). Johnson was considered to be one of the top CBs in the league last season, was a pro-bowler, and an all-pro. He deserved the contract he got. Sneed wasn't the best CB on the Chiefs and isn't close to Johnson's level. He could end up being a good player for the Titans, but I'm glad we're not paying that kind of money to him. Add in the knee injury concerns and that kind of guaranteed money is crazy.
