Welcome once again to Dr. T’s annual, official, Colts Draft Contest for 2024! Believe it or not, this is the 25th year we are doing this since the first contest was the Edgerrin James draft of 1999! With only seven choices this year, we needed to be creative again. So, contestants will be asked to select an A, B, and C choice for ALL rounds. Correctly choosing choice A merits 5 points, while correctly choosing choice B or C instead will merit 4 and 3 points respectively. If one of your "A" selections is chosen, but in a different round than you predicted, you get 2 points, if one of your "B" selections is chosen in a different round than you predicted, you get 1 point, and if one of your "C" selections is chosen in a different round than you predicted, you get 0.5 points. In addition, we will have a bonus question again this year and give everyone the opportunity to predict if the Colts will trade their #15 pick! The choices will be: trade up, trade back, stay put or you can also abstain from guessing. Like last year, if you predict correctly, you earn one point, but if you are incorrect, you will be DEDUCTED one point. If you don’t want to risk it, you can also abstain (no harm, no foul). For those that do not answer this question, the default is that this is a vote to abstain. If AND ONLY IF there is no clear winner at the end of the 7 rounds of the draft, the contest will be extended for ALL participants in which everyone will also be awarded one point for each collegiate free agent you predicted would be drafted by the Colts but was instead signed by the Colts after the draft. Now that we re-signed Kenny Moore, he will lead the CB room and the Colts may not feel that we need another veteran in there. Otherwise, why not bring Gilmore back?

I think that Ballard's biggest recent mistake (a few yers ago) was singing Matt freaking Ryan with his expensive contract instead of picking up Baker Mayfield who wanted to come here for much cheaper. But if the bonehead Ryan decision did not happen, we may still have Reich as coach and not have had the opportunity to draft Richardson. I guess my point is that whoever evaluated Ryan vs Baker at the time could not have been more wrong and Ballard as GM signed off on it.

If 2024 is considered year one for Richardson and he continues to improve, Ballard will last another four years at least. But if Richardson is a flop, Ballard will then be a goner much sooner, IMHO.

Remember that Dallas Clark was pick #24 the year we chose him, not #15.

Then there is the conspiracy theory that "Maybe he is doing this in part to turn some teams off intentionally, so that he drops a few slots so that the Colts could make a reasonable trade up for him." Well how would this work? First, picks 1-3 would all have to be QBs without trades and I think that is very possible. Then Arizona (who doesn't need a QB and all the mocks say they will pick MHJ) trades their pick to another team that wants a QB. Well, that COULD happen. Then pick #5 is the chargers. They need a WR and Harbaugh (who knows MHJ well), will have to pick someone else. I think that's unlikely. And I don't think they will trade with us. So who's next? The Giants. If the Chargers by some miracle picks someone other than MHJ, I think the Giants COULD be a trade partner. Would the Giants pick someone else if they keep the pick? They could use a WR too. Next is the Titans and there is no way that they trade with us or not pick MHJ if he is there. Tantalizing to think about, but still very unlikely in my opinion.

We already have a 6'3 pass catching high end. His name is Kylen Granson. With Woods and probably Ogletree coming back I really don't think we will pick Bowers. He's not Kelce or Gronk. Instead we need a dynamic WR, CB or edge for #15.

Unless we trade up because our owner wants him that badly.

I have NO PROBLEM re-signing JT. AS LONG AS HE IS HEALTHY.

Shaq got his big money second contract, so I'm afraid we're stuck with him for now. He is EXACTLY the reason why we are not paying Taylor. We don't know if Jonathan is the same elite player and we don't want to make the same mistake of paying a guy with 1) an injury from which he may never return to his original form or 2) an increased tendency to be re-injured again and again.

Next year will be 25 years running this contest and I NEVER WON IT!

Well ... THE RESULTS ARE IN!! And the winner of the 2023 Dr T Colts Draft Contest is ... Solid84 with 12.5 points!! Congrats! Solid84 correctly chose no trade of #4 and picked Richardson, Brents, Rush, Scott and Witt Tied for second this year - both with 11 points - are Archer and Stitches. Archer also picked no trade of #4, Richardson, Brents, Rush, Scott and Witt, but not quite slotted as well as Solid84. Dang!! Stitches (who was winning after round 3) wound up correctly choosing no trade of #4 and picked Richardson, Brents, Rush, and Witt, but missed out on Daniel Scott (although did incorrectly pick Tyler Scott, the WR from Cincy!! Oh no!) Anyway, congrats again to Solid84 and we will all try again next year ...

A lot of people guessed that the Colts would not trade the #4 pick and many also picked Anthony Richardson there at #4 as an A, B or C selection. But so far, two contestants stand out: Stitches picked no trade and Richardson and Brents as A picks at #4 and #35 (although we traded out of 35). Anyhow Stitches leads after day two with 8 points. However, Craigerb picked no trade and was also correct with all three picks: Richardson, Downs and Brents, although the points were not maximized due to slotting with 7 points (according to the rules). Wow! Regardless, I think that everyone must admit that this is impressive! Let's see if anyone can catch up today! There are many possible picks ahead. Good luck everybody!

Chad is correct when he says: The "right round" truly means "right original spot". So, anything beyond the original spot will not get the full points rewarded. It may not be the poster's fault Ballard traded back but if it is not the original spot, it is what it is if you don't get the full credit.

Leaf was getting drunk in Mexico when he should have been getting ready for his first NFL season. Levis may not be the best QB in this year's draft, but he's not Leaf. And goody goody Wentz and Reich can keep reciting their New Testament Bible quotes. The quote on the bicep of Will Levis is strictly Old Testament. The more I think about it, the more I am convinced that Levis will be our pick. And I don't have a problem with that.

Looking at them head to head, Levis was way better than Richardson. I would not be disappointed if we had our choice for either and picked Levis. Remember that Dan Marino was cocky too and fell in the draft because of it.

Private work outs are for us to see what a QB can do: does he have touch? can he throw the fade? can he throw the check down without throwing 100 miles per hour? What is his footwork like? Can he throw the ball overhead, sidearm etc? We already know he (Levis and Richardson) can throw the bomb pretty well. Top 30 visits are to see the QB's football IQ looking at film and drawing plays out on the white board. Can he recognize the mistakes he made on his own film? Can he tell us why he did a certain thing on a certain play? Can he go through progressions? What does he see pre snap? Any visit is also about seeing how the QB acts socially and what are his priorities in life. Is he willing to learn or is he a narcissist? Are hunting, video games, women, money or whatever else distractions from film study? What is his work ethic like? Does his teammates like him? Is he a leader or a tyrant or a dummy? When all of these questions are answered, we then have to decide if he is worth drafting at the slot we have. Should we move up, stay put or trade back and get more picks? It's going to be interesting this year, that's for sure.
