  1. Strange games today. I thought Jacksonville and Chicago were considered to be top defenses. What happened to them?

  2. I'm not sure what to think about this season's "Blacklist." Red is great, as usual, but the show has gone way off with Liz going rogue. Something is bound to give; Liz can't keep this up without certain circumstances. I liked Tom, what am wondering if he is worth all the trouble.

      Hey there TS,

Thanks for your views on "Blacklist". Out of respect for you, I need to checkout that show & give it another whirl. Perhaps, I was too hasty with my first look at it.

  3. I've been reading Terry Pratchett's "Discworld' novels. They are recommended for anyone who enjoys fantasy mixed with satire. Strange characters, imaginative plots and very entertaining.

  4. Science fiction fans: a recommended read is Dan Simmons "Hyperion" series. Starts with "Hyperion"; The Fall of Hyperion" ; "Endymion" and "The Rise of Endymion." It was written in the 90's, but should still be available. One of the best series I've ever read., just brilliant. It needs to be read in order; otherwise would be a bit confusing.

Thanks for the recommendation TS. I admire individuals who still read books in the 21st Century for leisure as opposed to say forced occupational reading alone that is.

  5. I just finished reading the book "Claude and Camille (author is Stephanie Cowell)" about the Impressionist artist, Monet. It explains his paintings and his relationships with other artists and his one love, Camille Doncieux. Anyone who's admired Monet's water lilies and Gardens at Giverny might like this book. Very well written.

  6. I just finished reading Anne Rice's newest Vampire Chronicles book "Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis." I don't know where she is going with this new one. I don't care about the replimoid creatures, and I miss Lestat being the Brat Prince he was in past books. I read the whole thing, but this latest just didn't cut it for me.

I didn't know she had a new book.  That's too bad.  Rice can go on and on and on about things that you don't care about.  I remember one book where she wouldn't stop taking about the wall paper! That said, I loved the Vampire Chronicles so this is disappointing to hear

You could try reading it; maybe you would like it more that I did. However, this isn't the same as her former Vampire Chronicles. This is kind of a mixture of science fiction and gothic. Much of this book relies on the explanation of cells and genetics. Depends on your interest in those kind of things.

  7. I've been reading Stephen King again. Just finished "The Stand", and am currently reading 'Misery". For those who are into King, I'm pondering now what would happen if Trashman man met Annie Wilkes. Then there is Randall Flagg. Maybe I have too much time on my hands......

What's your favorite King novel? Just curious. Or book to movie adaptation?

    2. teganslaw

      teganslaw

I have several favorite novels: "The Stand"; "Misery" and King's newer book, "Revival".

As far as book to movie adaptation: "The Stand" miniseries. The film "Misery" wasn't quite as good as the book, but Kathy Bates hit it out of the park as far as acting. I also liked the movie "The Shining."

  8. The movie "Spider-Man: homecoming" is being released next year. Is the Spider-Man franchise really that popular, or is Hollywood running out of original ideas?  I personally don't care for Spider-Man, but maybe others do?

    1. southwest1

      southwest1

You're right TS. Spiderman keeps being made over & over again by Marvel Studios. It's definitely well beyond overkill now. I agree 100%.

I really enjoyed 'Spiderman 2' starring Kirsten Dunst & Tobey Mcguire as the 2 main love interests & Doc Oc as the villain. Good flick actually.

    2. southwest1

      southwest1

Yeah, I know. Marvel is going overboard with the webbed wonder though. To answer your question TS, yes, Hollywood is running out of original ideas. Or, to be blunt, all they care about as an industry is profit & the easiest way to make a killing at the box office is re-treads & remakes, which are crap & devoid of plot, but young people & comic geeks by tickets in droves.

I just saw 'Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice' recently distributed by DC Comics/DC Pictures. Man, is this picture pathetic. Wow. Good actors in it too [Jeremy Irons, Lawrence Fishbourne, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Holly Hunter & Amy Adams] & still a dismal picture with over 2 hours of my life that I'll never get back.

It's so bad. Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Chief nemesis is just atrocious.  How can you assemble high quality actors & give them such an amateur script? Sigh...Nothing is smart, sexy, or funny at all.

    3. southwest1

      southwest1

Okay, to be completely candid here. I do have a thing for actress Amy Adams. It's not on the same level as say Zoe Saldana, but it's high or right up there.

I just get bummed when Jeremy Irons & Lawrence Fishbourne 2 guys with iconic voices are given lame, filler roles.

I do like breaking down train wreck movies, but I'm not sure the new Bateman movie deserves the roast job SW1 would give it. I'm mulling it over.

  9. So sad to read about the wildfires in Tennessee. I visited Gatlinburg years ago, and had a wonderful time. The area was so beautiful, and it's difficult to imagine that almost everything is destroyed. I hope that eventually they can rebuild it, although it might take a long time.

  10. Go  Raiders! Take care of business on Monday night!

    1. southwest1

      southwest1

The Raiders are mesmerizing to watch right now. Derek Carr & company are flowing & definitely playoff bound this yr TS.

  11. Good week. The Colts won, Titans lost, and the Raiders beat the Broncos! Denver's defense kind of collapsed.

    1. 2006Coltsbestever

      2006Coltsbestever

Without Talib Denver isn't the same. He is the vocal leader and intimidator of that team and can cover anyone by himself. Von is the best player but Talib is more vocal. Anyway I agree, this has been 1 of the best weeks in my fandom sports history with the Cubs winning the WS, Colts beating Aaron Rodgers, Pacers destroyed the Bulls Saturday, and the Titans and Jags go down in flames.

  12. Jules, you're good at predicting NBA games, have you ever thought about fantasy football? You might do quite well there.

    1. Jules

      Jules

Never did fantasy football or got into it. Many over the years have asked me to do it as well and I just never did it lol.

      Maybe I will some day?

  13. It's been overlooked, but the music industry has been in the news lately.Rod Stewart getting knighted and Bob Dylan receiving the Nobel prize for Literature. That's the first time a musician has received the Nobel prize.  Congrats to both of them!

    1. Jules

      Jules

Bob Dylan I adore.......always and forever. Good for him.

And I did hear Rod Stewart was over the moon on being knighted. Like he was shocked and just so damn excited.

Like me some Rod at times too.

    2. southwest1

      southwest1

Whoa, Rod Stewart got knighted by the Queen? Not too shabby.

Patrick Stewart, the actor who played Jean Luc Picard on the TV series 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' talked about the process once. The most alarming thing is the invitation comes with no fan fair & could easily get thrown away as ordinary junk mail or shredded if a person isn't careful. Also, that you must bow to the Queen & not speak aloud until she formally addresses you the honoree personally.

  14. Reddington returns Thursday 10:00 est. on NBC. Who's your daddy?  Good shows to watch this week with 'Designated Survivor" and 'Blacklist." I'll have to skip part of the Thursday night football; can't miss "Blacklist."

  15. Counting one-two-three. How many minutes until the "Fire Pagano" threads start? I think they're staring now. :argh:

Jack gets promoted to the POTUS. Hades yeah! This is gonna be like Harrison Ford's "Get off my [Air Force One] plane" on steroids. Sweet!

It airs on ABC at 9 PM CST BTW.

I plan on watching 'Designated Survivor" I like Kiefer Sutherland and the trailer looks good. Thanks for the reminder.

I liked the plot/premier. Sutherland looked odd in those glasses, but I'll get used to it. So far so good.

  16. I had a dream where I was at the Superbowl and the teams playing were Green Bay and Buffalo. Location was in Houston, ad the score was tied 6-6 at halftime. I work up before the game ended, so don't know the winner. Premonition as to the next Superbowl? Not sure, but the dream seemed very real.

I dreamed Packers/Steelers SB twice!!! Actually would love to see them have a second go at it, very entertaining the first time around.

    2. southwest1

      southwest1

A Packers vs Bills SB you say. Do you remember who the play by play announcers were in the broadcast booth in your dream TS? Just curious.

    3. teganslaw

      teganslaw

SW1, I don't know who the announcers were, and I didn't recognize the voices. I know it was in Houston because I used to live there, and the setting was familiar. That's all I remember in the dream.

  17. My thoughts going out to your mother. I hope that she has a swift recovery. Don't worry about posting much; your family comes first. In the meantime, take care of yourself.

@southwest1  I have not been on here much lately.  I had no idea your mom had suffered another heart attack.   I hope you are doing okay, I know your family has been through a lot these past several months.   My thoughts and prayers are with you, my friend.

      southwest1

Thx Gramz. I appreciate it. I just meant that sometimes I think I explain myself adequately or sufficiently & then I re-read what I wrote days later, scratch my head, & laugh.

My incompetence not yours BTW. That's all I meant by my further elaboration. It's all good.

  18. I'm really liking Famke Janssen in "The Blacklist." Her character has some traits similar to Red's. Next week is the season finale, and the previews look good. Still not sure about Liz, but I think that eventually we'll find out.

    1. Synthetic

      Synthetic

She's a pretty good actress, I like her in the X Men films.

  19. Blacklisters: the show returns Thursday, April 7 @9:00 EST on NBC. You're all invited to Liz and Tom's wedding, if it actually takes place. One never knows what will happen.

  20. "Vikings" season 4 is as good as ever. I never thought that I could actually feel something for Floki. (Thanks, Helga.) The Bjorn story line is interesting. He is proving to be a leader. Just don't get rid of Ragnar anytime soon.

    1. Nadine

      Nadine

I haven't seen it  yet but Floki is one messed up guy. Rollo turned into a pretty bad guy.  I didn't see that coming

  21. "Vikings" returns Thursday, Feb. 18, 10:00 EST. on the History Channel. Going on its 4th season. Will be good to see Ragnar and Lagartha return once again. i no longer have the History Channel, but episodes should be available on the History website.

  22. Congratulations to the Broncos! Did the reporters really think that Manning was going to announce retirement last night? Had to laugh at some of those those questions: Manning handled the whole thing graciously.

I also want Von Miller to sign with  the Colts. (Not happening, though.)

    1. Nadine

      Nadine

I saw Jack Doyel on TV this am commenting on that.  He said he was dieing for a reporter to ask just that question, even though he knew full well Peyton wouldn't answer it.  It's what they do

  23. New episode of "The Blacklist" starts tonight, Jan.7. @9:00 est, NBC. I've seen a preview, and it looks good. Can't wait to see Reddington again!

You guys should hire Rob Ryan.

    2. teganslaw

      teganslaw

I don't think so. Don't know if Ryan just isn't very good or worked with the wrong team. He does have nice hair, though.

    3. southwest1

      southwest1

At 1 time, I thought Rob Ryan was a very skilled DC, but now? Let's just say my enthusiasm for him in that capacity has wavered somewhat. Rob will never grow bald though. :)

  25. Red Reddington is back Thursday! This season's Blacklist should be a good one.

I've heard great things about this show. Never watched it. But, we have talked about trying it out.
