  1. I wouldn't say best team.

    Falcons are better.

    Best team in the NFC?

Save that title for San Francisco, not GB, and definitely not ATL until they win a playoff game.

    Falcons may be better...

    And so are the 49ers....

And you can make an argument for the Giants too...

I like Green Bay. I'm very impressed with our win. But I don't think the Packers are the best team in the NFC. At least, not right now they're not. Among the best, yes. But **the** best? Not now. Lets check back on them in December...

Yes, the best team in the NFC also has a punch you in the mouth killer defense..."I left my heart in San Francisco" along with my spleen, a couple of broken legs, and a bloody nose. ;) haha:thmup:

  2. luckpwned.gif

    Ow.

Blindside hits like that always make me cringe, especially when Luck is focusing on moving the ball downfield. The Colts o-line cannot allow a free rusher to go unchallenged and unaccounted for. That's inexcusable.

  3. Jim Irsay made the right decision and the turnover of player and coaching personnel was completely justified. Andrew Luck is legitimate, the defense is improving, and our special teams looks capable and relevant for once. Peyton Manning landed in a darn good city with a solid team and excellent leadership with Bowlen, Elway, and Fox. I never him in San Francisco not in a million years. Jim Harbaugh is a fine coach but his foolish antics drive me nuts...Complaining about referee calls in the NFC Championship calls last season and claiming that the 49ers weren't interested in securing #18's talents for their roster. :slaphead: Yeah right Jim. What a load of crap. :funny::lol: Who cares if QB Alex Smith might be hurt or offended. Suck it up and grow a pair Alex!

In any case, the Indianapolis Colts have a great new HC in Pagano, a smart OC in Arians, a frugal and smart GM in Grigson, a class owner in Irsay, and money to spend in 2013. The Horseshoe is definitely pointing up IMO.

  4. I've been saying this for years - ever since the Pats got Moss and turned in to an offensive juggernaut. If you beat the Patriots' O-line, you'll beat the Patriots. If you try to cover Welker, Gronk, Hernandez while applicable, Lloyd, even Branch, the kitchen sink, etc you WILL LOSE. Bring the heat, and Brady struggles. Most teams either lack the talent to get behind the line consistently, or just don't gameplan to and attempt to cover everyone instead. Why did Eli beat Brady the Giants beat the Patriots three out of four times? Twice in the SB? A little bit of luck and a whole lot of pass rush. The pass rush was much better in the first Superbowl, but good enough in the second one. Good enough to make Brady ground it for a safety out the gate. If you hang back and give TB 4,5,6+ seconds to throw one of his guys WILL come open eventually and Brady will hit the wide open target. Whether it's 5 yards or 50 yards. Put pressure on TB? If the play doesn't have time to develop that pass turns in to a more difficult one, a poor pass, throwing it away, or an INT. Why more teams haven't figured this out and still try to cover everybody...I have no idea. They're professionals who know more about football than I ever will, but that seems god awfully stupid when we've seen what works and what doesn't over the course of dozens of games. Maybe they just have no confidence in their D talent being able to beat NE's o-line. I fully expect NE to coast through the rest of their schedule with a series of mostly blowouts leading to wins. Until NE plays the Texans. Houston I KNOW has enough talent to pressure Brady all game long - IF they choose to. If they try to cover everyone, they're fools and will probably lose. If they opt to bring it, the Pats will lose. Bigtime.
In order: #1 Houston - Good defense/pass rush designed to get to Manning. Their offense is equally good. #2 Atlanta #3 San Fran - Defense can do most of the work and hold NE to under 25. The O will have to show up to some extent. #4 Baltimore (Already have) #5 Jets. Just kidding. Should be humorous watching Houston throttle them on Monday night. Those are the four teams I'd put ahead of NE. Arizona won, but that was more of an anomaly I think. Baltimore is more/less even. Defensive edge to Balt, offensive edge to NE. San Diego...I haven't seen enough of to make a prediction.

All good points. Houston and the 49ers are the only stumbling blocks to a SB victory in New Orleans for NE IMO. 2 very good posts Moose Of Woe.

  5. Is it just me or are they not showing as many replays as they did last year?

They show so much garbage in an endless loop, how about more actual football on the football channel? Is that too hard to comprehend or what? I used to think the NFLN was the best thing to happen to TV since the wireless remote. But over the last few years, they've gotten lame and their "reporting" has gotten tabloid-esque.

You know ruksak. You are exactly right. Why can't the NFL figure out what the public really wants to see? I will gladly inform them. haha Excellent point ruksak!

  6. One amendment to my entry above:

    1. I want NFL Network to re-air both the Colts/GB game and the Broncos/NE game this week

    2. Denver's WR's, TE's, and RB's need to think as quickly as Manning thinks and adapt accordingly very quickly. I just hope that Denver's offensive weapons can do it it fast enough before #18's body or health gives out.

    3. Saying NE is gonna win the SB doesn't mean I think the Patriots walk on water. INDY is my #1 team and #18 will always be revered to me. But, the eye test doesn't lie. NE is a juggernant. Who can stop them? Houston? Ravens? Chargers? I just don't see it. Unless critical injuries creep up unexpectedly.

    4. I will always respect NE because of their toughness, Playoff appearances, the Patriot Way, and Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft, & Tom Brady's clutchness. I make no apologies for that EVER.

  7. Well, I was basically right, although, as usual, the Patriots' secondary had me swearing up a storm at times.

But there's no way that Bronco's defense could contain the Patriots' offense.

People here want to harp on the idea that McGahee's fumble may have cost the Broncos the game? What, and Ridley's wasn't a set-back for the Patriots?

The only true head-scratcher was that 4th and 5 call. Patriots should have punted. That's a field position situation at that point.

I really wanted to watch this game on TV and I was ticked off when I saw CBS Sports air Vikings vs Titans instead of Denver vs New England. Therefore, I was forced to listen to the Patriots broadcast of this game right after I listened to legendary broadcaster Bob Lamey do the play by play of the Colts 30-28 victory over the GB Packers on my Sirus Satellite Radio. A great game...Sorry Jeff Saturday. I hope NFL Network re-airs this game on NFL Replay either Tuesday or Wednesday so I can record and DVR.

VL is exactly right. The Patriots have too many weapons and you can't stop everybody it's impossible. WR Wes Welker was a BEAST. 13 catches for 114 yards. The RB's had over 200 yards rushing for 2 weeks in a row [1st Buffalo and now Denver], Vince Wilfork caused a crucial fumble last in the game just like last week wow!, DE Chandler Jones knocks down the football with his hands in the 1st quarter and nearly sacks #18 in the 3rd quarter, Patrick Chung had good coverage in the secondary for a significant portion of the game, and RB's Bolden, Ridley, and Woodhead all hand good runs and good hands all game long. Translation: The NE Patriots are going straight to the SB and they an 85-90% chance of winning it easily right now. For someone who was being phased out at the beginning of this season, Coach Belicheck and the Patriots front office should pay Wes Welker a longterm contract to remain in NE immediately IMO.

The Patriots got 35 1st downs and LB Von Miller once sacked Tom Brady a couple of times the entire game. Jesus, that is impressive!!! Even I cannot deny that smooth flowing precision.

But, to be fair to Manning and Co. there was only a ten point difference in the final score 31-21 and both the NE broadcasters acknowledged repeatedly "It's never over with both these men on the field [Manning and Brady] A small lead is NEVER enough of a cushion with Manning on the field." Thank you for that Patriots Nation. In conclusion, the McGhee fumble completed changed the scope and outcome of that game, but to NE's credit they closed the door and slammed in shut on a comeback by getting a 1st down and running out the clock. Congratulations NE. You did what you needed to win. Your weapons are just too great to stop, curtail, and neutralize.

The Broncos will click next year. Manning's arm is fine. Denver must work on timing and getting all their TE's, WR's, and RB's all on 1 page. WR Brandon Stokley is still clutch. NE is going to win the SB. Grade: B+. I can't give you an A because your defenders in the endzone need to knock down passes and challenge WR's more that they do right now IMO. Great Game NE! Very well done. :hat:

  8. To answer an above question, let me put it like this:

If there were such a thing as football heck, we would all happilly sentence him to it to slither on his snake like stomach on fiery ashes for all eternity.

It was because of Mangini's treachory that men like Rodney Harrison and Tedi Bruschi have to answer slanderous questions about what they worked so hard for for the rest of their lives, just because of his envy towards Belichick.

Should he get a drink in a local bar?

    I wouldn't recommend it.

    Actually PATS16N0,

There is a punishment worse than eternal darnation. It called purgatory the stage between paradise and the fierce, smoldering pit of Lucifer's underground Hades. See Dante's Inferno and the 9 levels of Hades or Milton's "Paradise Lost." For the record, I do not believe that Spygate has tainted Bill Belichick's 3 SB victories in any way, shape, or form. He earned all those Championship titles legitimately.

Thank you for your feedback PATS16N0. I always appreciate a fresh perspective on an age old question: Can the hatchet of betrayal and sabotage ever truly be buried? Probably not.

  9. This is an interesting and unexpected thread to walk into before my first post on your forum.

At the same time I'm not that surprised.

I live in the heart and soul of Patriots football, Massachusetts, and I can tell you that when the Patriots used to play the Colts it would be a war paint weekend. We hated you. I hated you. All losses in the NFL are tough for us but when it came to the Colts we never wanted to give you an inch. Never.

There was the Steelers and there was the Colts, but the Colts were #1 on the enemies list. We never played a game that we didn't want to absolutely bury you in. We wanted to inflict pain on your fan base.More over, we didn't want to let you inflict pain on ours. I still remember clear as day watching the last time Peyton Manning played New England in a Colts uniform.

He returns to Gillette stadium tomorrow but it just doesn't feel the same.

I'm not a big believer in quarterback versus quarterback. I think that's largely a media invention to create hype. I believe in Team versus Team.

But it's somewhat of a somber feeling knowing that this may be the last time Tom Brady and Peyton Manning ever face each other on the field. Even if it's not, because of the new orange uniform, it just feels like the end of an era I really cherished looking back as a football fan.

The nervous pacing. The jumping to our feet after a big play. Driving through snow storms listening to Gil Santos passionately call the games. Cold nights in Gillette. Excited afternoons in living rooms with friends and family. The feeling that the game or season was on the line with every down.

It was the greatest rivalry in the league. It may have been the greatest rivalry of all time. It wasn't defined as others are, through trash talking, or fighting over a division, or even bad blood. The greatness of the Patritos and Colts rivalry was defined purely through the contest of two champions in a league with only one trophy.

Now that it's over I feel my hatred for the Colts has receeded and I don't carry with me the same grudges that I used to, towards Indianapolis or, even more unbelievable, Peyton Manning.

With him wearing the new uniform, It almost seems like just a novelty game tomorrow.

Peyton Manning, our great nemesis, is and will always be an Indianapolis Colt

    PATS16N0,

An intriguing entry of mutual adversary animosity there. I wouldn't classify it as hate per say, just a strong, intense desire not to lose or choke in front of your squad. Emerging victorious among the Foxboro faithful meant that the Colts were tried, tested, and fundamentally sound. Everyone knew in INDY that when it came to Bill Belichick you had to play flawless, mistake free football for 3 hours straight. You had to be patient, convert on 3rd down, score touchdowns not field goals, and keep Tom Brady seated on the beach as long as possible. NE brought out the best in us and we brought out the best in them. Toughness, production, and results were the only thing that mattered...and Playoff appearances.

I agree with you 100% PATS16N0. QB vs QB comparisons are irrelevant. I wish the media would compare QB's vs CB's and safeties more myself or LB's and DE's vs QB's. It makes more sense.

I don't know. Just because #18 is wearing orange vs blue and white, it doesn't mean that an audience can't appreciate 2 mastermind field generals carve up their opposing secondary's like a Thanksgiving turkey. Whose got the better ground game? Whose got the better front 4 and overall pass rushers? Whose Special Team's will give their squad the best field position and opportunity to win? A rivalry doesn't just stop because colors and jersey names have changed in my mind anyway. I'm really looking forward to this game almost as much as the SB. How far has Peyton come in his rehab? How much further does he need to go? How much will Wes Welker be used? Which squad has the best offensive line and will give their QB the best protection downfield? What's the game plan for each team? Feel each other out slowly and methodically or go for the big play/flee flicker early to set a tone of dominance and control over your rival?

Yes, #18 will always be a Horseshoe commodity and INDY favorite son to me too. That will never change in my eyes. INDY drafted him first in 1998; he is ours to claim no one else's.

  10. My wife is...oh wait.

    Hey Vance,

I just had an interesting thought. What if you met a beautiful woman who was smart, sexy, funny, and compatible in every to you way except that she idolized the Indianapolis Colts? Would you still marry her despite her allegiance to the BLUE Horseshoe? Can true love survive divided NFL loyalties? :dunno:

Just Kidding!!! I'm sure you'd find a way to make it work. [For those who might not know, Vance87's favorite NFL team is the Houston Texans. A very good team that will make significant strides this year. They are my dark horse SB team this year. Next year, Denver baby. Book it!!!]

  11. My husband is a lifelong Cowboy fan. Monday night after probably the third interception I turned to him and lovingly said "AMERICAS TEAM MY #$%" LOL He had no reply and just hung his head. :)

I'm sure your husband is a fine, upstanding, and smart individual, but he's a Cowboy fan really? Well, we all have at least one achilles heel and fatal flaw right? Just Kidding!!!

Tony "Oh No" Romo...Another interception. Sorry...I despise the Cowboys with every fiber of my being and whenever they collapse I'm just overjoyed and giddy myself.

  12. Hey VL,

I just ordered "The Case for Foortball's Greatest Quarterback: Tom Brady vs. the NFL" by Sean Glennon today. I'm really looking forward to reading it myself. Thanks for the title and author INFO again. To me, both Manning and Brady are elite field generals and I will always respect your Boston QB almost as much as Peyton. We're talkin' a fraction of a decimal point difference here in my book. Yes, #12 has more hardware and yes he won them all fair and square, but #18's 4 MVP's ain't too shabby either.

Thanks for not taking me to the woodshed today about my lack of roster expertise in NE. You could have. I appreciate that you didn't. You're a stand up guy VL. I look forward to more football discussions with you as the NFL season progresses

  13. Lombardi has the lowest pick percentage of the season, but McNabb has the highest, that I can recall. So I don't know. haha

It's not going to be a blowout. Down to the wire, like they always were.

My heart says Peyton is always "The Comeback Kid" but if #18 is "The Sheriff" than clearly Foxboro is firing on all cylinders right now.

Brady and his band of U.S. Federal Marshals will probably win this high noon shootout at the OK Coral. I always love a suspenseful, good old western flick.

Cue the Clint Eastwood spaghetti Western music...

  14. Oh my god, I love you, SW! I've never seen these before. I'm sitting here watching with my heart beating faster and faster. Now I have to go tackle someone. These are awesome!!!

Yeah BAB, your poor husband is gonna come home, you will ferociously tackle him violently to the ground [a perfectly clean hit. No launching with the helmet either. Simply textbook.], and your husband is gonna say, "Honey, what did I do to upset you so much?" :funny::lol:haha Just Kidding!!!

  15. *Goes to Checklist*

    Freeney, Satele & Angerer- Check

Oh & on a positive note, NFL Network/Total Access said Greg Jennings might not play Sunday. So I think that's a Positive for us

I agree TK85. This is good news, but we must neutralize Green Bay WR Jordy Nelson though. He's extremely dangerous IMO.

  16. Tom James@TribStarTJames

Updated Colts injury list: DNP-Davis (ankle), King (groin), Moore (ankle), Olsen (knee), Reitz(knee).

    Tom James@TribStarTJames

Colts Wednesday injury list: DNP-Davis, JKing, MMoore, Olsen, Reitz. Limited-Angerer, Fleener, Satele. Full-Freeney.

Okay [moderator] Superman, I will now admit it. Jules's post proves that Twitter does indeed have some minor value, especially when it comes to up to the minute player injury updates.

Well played Superman and Jules well played. :hat:

  17. SW, Bequette doesn't even play.

It'll be Chandler Jones, the rookie, looking to sack Peyton. Cunningham hasn't had many snaps either; it's been Ninkovich primarily on the left side.

Fair enough. Thanks for clearing that up. I don't have the Direct TV Sunday NFL package so I don't get to see too many NE games in WI on Dish Network. But, I do listen to INDY and Patriot games quite frequently on my Sirus Satellite Radio. I just figured with the movement to make your Foxboro squad younger and faster on defense that Bill would rotate pass rushers like he used to as DC for the NY Giants. My mistake. I do listen well and I can be taught...Just give me some time. hahaThanks for your patience VL.

  18. Yes, it can be a tense situation in a room with divided team loyalties. If your team wins, how many humorous jabs do you get in? Do you milk your glory for all it's collective worth? On the flip side, if the Colts lose, how much playful ridiculing are you willing to endure yourself?

I live in Packers County, but I am a diehard Colts fan. My own family usually roots for the Cheese Heads. My own nightmare: A 3 point SB loss in the following matchup: Green Bay vs. Indianapolis Colts... :Yikes::eek: :slaphead:

  19. Arians was the head coach at Temple in the 80s. He at least had been in charge somewhere. To me, adding Tom Moore as OC, or interim HC if that too was a consideration by the OP, or letting him in the building to change lightbulbs, is a bad idea. Not our system, not our direction, doesn't add value that I can see.

I don't think some of you understand that we're basically running a slight variant of the offense Peyton ran his first few years in the league, before they started going heavy no-huddle. Tom Moore HELPED design this offense. So for people saying it would be hard to bring him in because he doesn't know the offense, that simply isn't true. The verbiage is probably different, but the schemes and concepts are practically the same.

Tom Moore is an offensive genius and I wouldn't mind bringing him back in a consultant role similar to what he did his last few years here.

The Jets, where Moore is a consultant currently, have perhaps the most abysmal offense in the NFL. And Moore has had that role with the Jets since the Colts, and Moore, let his contract expire, a year after he had a reduced role in Indy. I understand why fans, and some teams, look back in their own history, bring back people who were part of previous success, but it rarely works. Those moments, those players, that history is gone. Clearly Moore could understand this Colts offense, jump right back in, adjustments happen all the time, even mid-season (see Broncos last year), but the point is why? Because Arians can't be a head coach and call every play on offense? Because the Colts offense is so bad that Arians has to be replaced after three weeks?

His "job" in New York, currently, is irrelevant to the discussion. To suggest that any of the blame for the Jets offensive struggles right now should fall on him is silly. He's not the coordinator, and as far as what I've read, he's not even involved in the play calling whatsoever. When he was a "senior assistant" his last few seasons here in Indy, he was still very much involved in play calling throughout the games. Not every down, but still enough to where he could make an impact.

And you bring up not looking back on history and bringing back people from our past... What do you think we've done already? Bruce Arians was brought in as coordinator because he worked with Peyton. In the off chance that Peyton was brought back, he would've had a level of familiarity with Arians. Christensen was retained on the staff for that very same reason as well. We are not as far removed from our past as you'd like to believe we are. Bringing Moore in would not disrupt anything, IMO.

Arians will have a lot on his plate, and if he plans to call the offense, that's going to mean less time dedicated to tasks most head coaches have prepping for the week. He will be spread too thin eventually, mark my words

I agree 100% with everything ahf321 just said particularly the last sentence. Bringing in Tom Moore makes perfect sense to me strictly from a time management perspective. I never like to see 1 person juggling more than 1 primary responsibility. It usually spells disaster. See the New Orleans Saints or Mike Holmgren in Seattle as the HC/GM a colossal train wreck. 1 coordinator 1 function. Forget this multiple hats business. I hate it. I'm not doubting Arian's abilities, just too many distractions for 1 individual thats all. Do your job. The one you were hired to do: OC.

Also, bringing up Tom Moore and inferring that he is anyway responsible for the NY Jets offensive woes is completely baseless, unfounded, and way outside the scope of this discussion. The Jets would have unraveled this year with or without Tom Moore's presence. Everybody knows this. Bringing in Tom Moore to INDY is not being a slave to the past. It is bringing stability to an organization during an unsettling time to allow coordinators to maintain consistency on the team where their roles and expertise are best suited to help the Colts continue to win. My argument for Moore is time management vs. a personal skill set.
