It’s almost as if the combine doesn’t mean as much to the organizations and players. Flippin’ Hopkins was on today talking about how he purposefully didn’t try as hard when he went through it.

Its a show for the media and fans for sure and probably became less about the players when they started to let fans attend.  If I had to guess the in person interviews end up being way more valuable than a throwing competition. Tape is probably 50%, interviews 40% and the actual throwing is well for us.

If the Colts are in on this they must REALLY like one of these QBs. I just really hope we don’t give up firsts to move up 3 spots.

CrAZY you could role with any of the 4 and come out with similar results in 2 to 3 years.  I hope Ballard is not that stupid. If we are in win now mode then sign a vet,  otherwise be smart.  We have other holes to fill.

I  agree bout Levi. He just seems very egotistical and those guys  crumble. I said  to fans here that when they  panned around there was Hooker standing there. Just something bout his presence.  I have heard he is  very mature and just seems like a leader.

I agree. If it wasn't for his overall measurables being prototypical I wouldn't have given him a 2nd look. But I do feel we need to try to come away with 1 of the top 4 or ballard may be looking for a job.

  4. I still stand by my original thought. Stroud if he makes it to 3 and  Levis if Straud goes #1 or 2 overall.  I just don't see any reason to move up to #1 or 2. I would only consider moving as high as 3. Even then Im not super comfortable with that.  Levis downfall is he is not quite as talented as he thinks he is. However I'm willing to stay at 4 to see what he can do.

That is thing I do not understand, why does 90% of the forum believe Chad Kelly would be a better option over JB? That is like they are saying they know more than Reich and Ballard. Believe me, if Reich and Ballard thought Kelly was far better he wouldve been playing by week 8 after JB's injury. That is common sense.

This is repeated over and over and while it might be true, I believe a decision was made by the coach and GM before the season started to allow JB  play the full season regardless of performance to try an earn full starters money and his next contract. The players were also behind this Im sure which made the decision easier to give JB the entire season. I am also willing to bet that Irsay/Ballard had personal goals that JB had to meet to get that contract thus allowing JB to play all the way to the end to meet those goals makes sense.  Personally I dont think he met those goals. JB needed to show improvement from 2017 and I didnt see it.  He purposely inflated his TD/Int ratio early in the season by throwing 1 yard TD passes that could have easily been run in.  Once teams had tape on him, he regressed all the way back to 2017.

  6. Irsay seems to be holding out a little hope by saying he is taking things at face value. That alone suggests he has reservations about Lucks decision. Irasy seems to also suggest by staying with JB and the draft that the door for Luck is wide open to return.  Pretty much saying "Luck, I know your out there. Please come back." If there was really no chance Luck comes back, Irsay would have been a little bit more upfront about the future of the Colts, alas he has no clue at the moment.

  7. Interesting game in some respects. I didnt pick us to win but

it was a little closer than I thought it would be.  This game

is a great representation of how different offenses win or loose.

Some on here think having a great game manager that makes no

mistakes is the best way to win. Others say you need a QB who

will put the team on their back and throw open receivers even

if it means turning the ball over. The end result is quick hitting

plays is demoralizing to the other team.  Chunk plays are not

scaring anyone especially if you have a high flying offense on

the other side of the ball.  I really believe Frank burned his playbook

he had for Luck and now is just dink and dunk city. Its truly baffling.

  8. Attracting any FA's will be difficult without a settled QB situation.

imo no FA would be clamoring to join a JB run offense next year thus the reason we are hearing tid bits of our GM scouting young talent at QB. I think Ballard knows it will be very difficult to recruit anyone

to Indy without a Luck or similar type QB.

Im sure he is in under extreme pressure right now. He cant say what he really thinks and the odds of replicating anything close to what we had with Luck and Manning are not very good. He basically has to hit it out the park to appease his owner and a fan base that is slowly becoming disenchanted with the team.

With all that said, I can see his number 1 focus right

now is moving up in the draft to get his QB and all this scouting is

really a smoke screen or to basically start building their draft board.

Our next franchise QB needs to be someone we draft and not a journeyman.

  9. at 6-6 with 3 of 4 on the road its asking wayyy to much of JB to pull

this out. He's not even 100%.  Sit him now not only for his health

next year but to keep his stock somewhat high. Its a win win win

for everyone. Fans are happy we get to unwrap a new toy to play

with in CK with absolutely no expectations,  JB keeps his stock

at a high note by improving his win loss record from the prior start

and the colts win because believe or not fans will come back if

there is a chance they find a diamond in the rough. Or they dont

and end up picking high in the draft.

If Irsay can ship Manning to Denver to suck for Luck then we can

send a patriot now colt  backup QB to the bench. If they dont, I will

have lost all hope in the management of this team. Get over this

nice guy nonsense. We have a locker room of nice guys but you dont always

    win with them.

I have no idea where this mentality comes from.

I want my team to win every game they play.....every game.

Ok I could have worded that better. Basically not in the championship

or playoff hunt.  Why get JB more hurt if you need him next year and

your out of the playoff contention? Or at least really really close to being out of contention.

The way I see it...the Colts (prematurely IMO) gave JB ~$30M in new money just a few months ago to be the starting QB. So I can't imagine they will bench JB (and essentially admit some level of failure)...to see what Chad Kelly can do. Not to mention the shot his confidence would take...if they are still even somewhat committed to him long-term.

That might happen next year if the season goes awry (more likely it would be for a rookie than Kelly though)...but it won't happen this year. I think they are going to use these final games to continue to "evaluate" JB, regardless of what happens.

I also think we will start to see some articles in the media that paint JB in a positive light about his "first" year as the starting QB...as the Colts control the narrative of how he should be evaluated.

I could be wrong of course about Kelly playing...it just seems incredibly unlikely. If it were to happen...I think it would be spun as him being shut down due to injury (likely a setback with the knee)...not because of performance.

As for next year, JB carries a $12.5M dead cap hit...so he's not going anywhere...unless some team is willing to fork over a crazy draft haul...that would cause Ballard to eat that cap hit.

CK only plays imo if JB gets hurt and we are out of the playoff hunt. Which seems likely that both could happen now with JB's knee and not wanting him to get anymore hurt when there is nothing else to play for. It needed to be a perfect storm so to speak and it seems it might just be forming.  Im hoping coach lets CK audition for #2 QB for a couple games this year while also letting JB know that his job is safe this year and its his to loose next year.  Draft a late round QB and dump Hoyer at the end of the year.  Thats my wish list anyway .

I've been curious about how Ballard and Reich feel about drafting a potential future replacement, whether they're on the same side of the fence or not. I've said it before but I'm curious how much longer Reich will be for. I mean, I don't have much reason to believe it he'll retire within the next 5+ years but I just have doubts that he'll be one of those guys coaching into his mid 60s.

Basically, I just wonder if he's pro-developing a potential replacement or if he's all in on JB. Obviously, he's said all the right things about JB in the media, but going by our gameplan's and taking the ball out of JB's hands, you wonder what he truly thinks.

They didnt have a lot of time to prepare JB mentally with Lucks early retirement.

Its not easy to change the mindset of someone who has been a career backup.

You would have hoped Ballard sat JB down at some point and said 'look we need

you become a starter in the NFL'  'Notice I didnt say we need you to start for the

Indianapolis Colts'  ' We need you to become a starting level QB'

My belief is they have had this discussion multiple times. Ballard is not someone

who will keep someone for sentimentality sake. I think its pretty evident with

Ballard taking time during a Playoff Run to scout other Qb's. This was Ballard

    sending a message .

I think it also very clear that as long as JB is healthy, this entire season was devoted

to him redefining himself as starting level QB. The problem I see is that he has traits

from his tenure in New England and backing up Luck to do what you can to not lose

a football game due to stupid mistakes. He is so locked in to not making mistakes he has indirectly crippled the offense to a degree.

This is what separates elite/great QB's from the rest. They understand being open

is not graded on yards but their belief that the WR will go and a make a play. This

is where JB needs to let go. He needs to understand he dosnt need to try and win

every game by himself. He needs to let other professional football players carry some

    of that weight and responsibility.

He's behind Jacoby Brissett and Brian Hoyer man, that's all you need to know. Frank Reich and Chris Ballard have been doing this their entire adult lives, and doing it well, you don't think they have the recognition to see if we have a starting QB already on the roster, on the practice squad? Seriously? Man, you guys are unreal. Same people that keep buying $30 worth of Powerball tickets every week, because "Somebody has to win".

I didn't proclaim greatness if you read my post.  Coach brought him up over every other available qb to a team fighting for a playoff spot. It will take a disaster to happen for him to see the field but they see something. I think most here agree with their approach to this situation.  Let him sit for a year building trust then let him fully compete for starting or qb2 job year 2.  Know what you don't know.

"We have one he's on the practice squad, We have one he's on the practice squad, We have one he's on the practice squad, We have one he's on the practice squad."

Good point and how long has been on the practice squad with no interest from any other team? You'd think somebody would be interested in stealing the next HOF QB from our PS. Geez Cain didn't last a week. This Kelly adoration is  almost pathological at this point. He played well against guys bagging groceries at Walmart right now. Denver can't find a QB and they canned him last year. Clemson canned him his first year in college. We waived him and he had no takers. It's funny to read all these gushing comments about a guy who has never played in a meaningful NFL game and who has sat unmolested on our PS for 12 weeks.

There maybe other QBs better than JB in the draft or FA, but swag boy isn't one of them.

Thanks for your insight.  The next time I buy a lottery ticket I would love some of that crystal ball magic you got going on.

Seriously people get over your hatred for Ck.  This is Riecks protege.  He would not be on the team if coach didn't think he had a chance to be good

This whole chunk verbiage has screwed with JBs head.  If the coach is calling those plays as explosive it's nfw JB is defaulting to that frame of mind. Coach has been quoted saying JB has the green light to change the call at the Los.  So on one hand the coach has drilled in a little to hard on what he wants the that a young impressionable QB is unable to adjust and in the other play calling is all on JB and deserves the long talk he got from coach.

  16. Hoyer's success shows me we can plug and play any competent QB behind

our line and they will hold their own. We have one the best lines in the NFL.

Its soo good that it often creates a short passing game because QB's can sit

forever waiting for the underneath stuff to develop.  In essence its perfect

for JB because that is the protection he requires to run his offense. As long as

the oline dosnt regress to good/average from great he will thrive.

I tend to look at things half full. I understand we may never have this oline

performance year in and year out.  That is why I believe the we need to

start expecting more from JB.  Whether that happens this season or next

he needs to show he can run an offense like Hoyer.

I also fear he is going to be injury prone because the scramble is part of his offense rather than being a symptom of it. You dont necessarily need to be a gunslinger but you have to show you have all the tools when needed to be a franchise QB. Whether its JB, Hoyer or CK we are going to show flashes but until we get a statement from Irsay that this guy or that guy is the future

of the colts we are going to continue to have in-fighting.

  17. Great win and there was little extra from the team and Justin Houston.

However we had to play at an extremely high level as a team to eek out that win

because of limitations in the passing attack.
We are inconsistant as a team and JB is just an extension of that. When the team

has problems JB is not able to overcome it by himself.  When the team is playing

its A game. JB can be great game manager.

The problem with this is we are relying on a one guy a little too much. Mack is

going to get dinged up again. Its not a mattter if but when.  JB has to show he can

put the team on his back and carry them not just at home but on the road.

For some, this is just a progrosession and that he will get there. For others in the prove-it state of Indiana he dosnt have any history of doing this anywhere else so there is

nervousness about where this team is going after this year. Im rooting for him

but not as much as I am rooting for the Colts and what they plan to do with him

long term. He definetely has moxy and and leadership qualities, game talent just

isnt there yet.  Im afraid we get to the end of the year and some will say he needs

another year to really realize his true potential.  We may never have a team like

we have this year thats why you play to win now.  Overall I am really happy

for the Colts today. They shocked the world.

  18. Im not sure you want to abandon any element of football if it gives you options and allows the defense to change things up.  What we need and have in Leonard is a team captain on defense that can correctly call out defensive signals.  I can only imagine he will get better..

  19. Unfortunately until we win in the post season, our identity is the team

that lost its star QB to retirement in the prime of his career. As we get

further in the season and we get more national air time, the story about

Luck will continue to get more attention. Aside from that a good second

story about Quentin Nelson should get more attention. However we need to continue running the ball well or even that story could fade.

If you had to make me say something team specific, I would just say our

identity is we have a team of just good dudes that go to war for each other in the face of crippling adversity. Not going to win any super bowls as currently constructed but they have no fear regardless.

  20. 2 minutes ago, presto123 said:

Brissett is a "game manager" type QB. He's not the long term answer by any stretch. You can win some games with this type QB, but unlikely a Super Bowl. Hope he makes me eat my words, but usually my gut instincts are spot on.

I have to agree as well. Your thoughts are shared by more than you think. We were superbowl bound.  We were locked and loaded for a long play off run. Most Colts fans, myself and probably you included have a very high bar for the QB position. Going from that to average at best and having a slightly better 2017 is not going to cut it. At best I have them going 9-7 only because I think our defense and running is that good.

  21. Lol all I know is we are going to frustrate the hell out of opposing coaches this year. They may shut down JB and think they have us beat but our defense and running game will squeak games out just like this one. I'm trying not to get to riled up one way or the other because as of now this is our formula. Frustrating to everyone else but still gets you a sniff of the playoffs and possibly a 9-7 record.  Ballard is a genius.

The sky is not falling.  We just went on the road two games in a row against two very good teams.    We split them but one could argue we should be 2-0.  Jacoby brought us back in the 4th qtr. of both games.  Our 3rd. down conversion is 50%.  That is very good.  The game plan pretty much dictates how often we go deep.  It even looked like he might have been looking there a number of times but it wasn't there.  We basically have two rookie WR's playing in Cain and Campbell now.  I'm feeling pretty good about Jacoby.  He will only get better as the season goes as his chemistry with receivers grows.  Two games in and I think we are in a good place.  JB can play.  There is no doubting that IMO.

The o line is directly responsible for this win and keeping us in the first game. All JB needed to do is not turn the ball over.
