You are likely right but I don't think 15 is miles away. And there's a bunch of very good WR in this draft so teams may adjust their strategy bc of it I think.

In 2020 I had Henry Ruggs as my 6th receiver on my personal draft board, and the Raiders made him the 1st WR taken, so you never know. This class is deep, so maybe teams will value other positions higher, but I'd say I'm 99% certain than Marv, Malik, and Rome are all gone by pick #10.

Bradley will have the finger pointed at him next, as if we’ve done #all to do anything help the defense.

Even Gordon Ramsay couldn’t cook an edible meal with 2 mustard packets, a half-spoiled grape, and a can or sardines.

How anyone could expect this defense to take any kind of measurable step in the right direction with the lack of help we’ve given it so far this offseason and by adding whoever we do in the draft is beyond me.

We’ve set him up to fail, and he will be the next sacrifice for the Ballard excusers to finger as “the problem”.

I don't disagree that our defense has lacked elite talent, but Gus can't expect to get the Legion of Boom again. His defense is simple and depends on elite players to just dominate. Teams with worse defensive players need to throw in some interesting and complex coverages and blitz packages. If Gus doesn't change, Stroud will sit back and accurately pick us apart two weeks every single year. Texans fans are already insufferable as it is.

Really ? Let's take a look at McConkey going against one of the best defenses in college football Florida State

    https://www.espn.co.uk/video/clip?id=39211513

I like the GAS rating a lot, but I'll agree that it doesn't match what my eyes see with McConkey, or what his separation numbers showed.

If I had to guess, I think Ladd tends to get open with his route running and subtle body movement. He puts guys in skates, even when he isn't explosive in a route. I believe I read a few weeks ago that when compared to the college numbers of all current starting NFL WRs, Ladd's separation numbers are in the 98th percentile. That's not among current college players. That's against the numbers of starting NFL WRs when they were in college. Ladd is clearly elite at separation, but it seems GAS doesn't translate to his game. In general, I'd prefer a player with a high GAS score, but Ladd is an exception, 100%.

    From PFF.com

    • Malik Nabers, LSU — 99th percentile
    • Adonai Mitchell, Texas — 99th
    • Xavier Worthy, Texas —99th
    • Xavier Legette, South Carolina — 99th
    • Rome Odunze, Washington — 98th
    • Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State — 96th
    • Emeka Egbuka, Ohio State — 93rd
    • Keon Coleman, Florida State — 93rd
    • Troy Franklin, Oregon — 92nd
    • Johnny Wilson, Florida State — 91st
    • Malachi Corley, Western Kentucky — 81st

I believe one of the PFF guys he's going to start using the GAS score heavily into his personal big board for WRs, because WRs that score well have a much higher hit rate than those who don't. Apparently Puka Nacua was around like the 98th percentile. RAS doesn't matter if the player can't get open and move with the ball in his hands.

I think there is going to be a huge run at WR before we get to 46. That’s why I really want to go pass catcher first. We haven’t had this opportunity in the first round for offense and I think they need to take advantage. Especially when 4 QB are probably going top 5 or 6. Then you will have OT. Going to be some amazing offensive pass catchers at 15.

That's very likely. I'm not sure how Ballard views the value of WR at #15 if the big 3 and Bowers are gone. I've been going back and forth recently on BTJ. If the pick is WR, I would expect a trade back first.

I done follow draft very much except for some big names. Are there any CB that could be there at 46 so colts could go offense at 15. Just makes me sick we might pass on an elite pass catcher.

Unless TJ Tampa or Ennis Rakestraw are there, the 2nd round isn't good value for a CB.

The 2nd and 3rd round are AMAZING value for WR however.

So I put a lot of thoughts into one simple sentence, that doesn't represent the complaint that most anti-ballard fans have. Sure, each year has its personality traits, but overall his BBB FA approach, combined with drafting to FILL needs, with highly athletic but not overall spectacular players. He does a very good job at drafting players that provide value, and he plugs them into spots where the roster appears deficient. (Ryan Kelly, Wentz, Nelson, Leonard, Franklin, Paye, Dayo, Buckner) all first-round picks to fill a gap in the roster.

The first example you give is the Rivers year. That was the peak of our roster under Ballard, if Luck had not retired, and we had him grow another year with that team, that was our year. Hilton, Zaire, and Speed have all talked about it on his podcast.

I disagree that his plan has not been the same for seven years. If we are gonna zoom in on the ridges and humps, we can find a difference between each season and strategy. But Ballard has not changed. He took his sweet time signing over-the-hill QBs and old QBs and avoided drafting a QB (which he has publicly revealed multiple times is because of the accountability that often follows taking a QB with your top pick), and now he's drafted a QB with very limited film, whom just suffered a serious shoulder injury, and we are now on to another .500 season most likely.

I suppose if .500 and ALMOST making the playoffs, or ALMOST winning the division is what fans are into, then sure, Ballard is great. But overall I believe, and many other fans believe that Ballard hasn't changed much, if at all. And that the differences in each approach are more circumstantial than belief system-dependent.

You had me until the AR doubting. The kid is 21 years old, and he has more athletic ability than probably anyone in the league. Let him heal, teach him to protect himself, and from the glimpses I saw last year, he's a top 5 QB in a few years.

Feels like a good time to issue a reminder.  Two years ago, J’Ville spent a fortune in FA.   That was the year they surprised the NFL giving the little WR, Kirk 4/72 which had incentives into the $80’s.   And J’Ville went on to have a good season.

Many here showered the Jaguars with applause and wondered why can’t the Colts do that?!   But here’s what they forget….

In the 10 years BEFORE that one, no team spent more in FA than the Jaguars.   $1.4 BILLION dollars.  That’s billion with a B.  And I think they had one post season appearance to show for it.  So most years Jacksonville “won” free agency and they had almost nothing to show for it.

So when @GoColts8818 says the “winner” of FA typically doesn’t have a very good season, he is correct.  It was his comment that triggered my memory about Jacksonville’s lost decade.  Thanks, GC!

In 2015 the Colts were considered winners of free agency. Granted there were a few good signings, but we haven't been the same since. Ever since then, I've been completely fine with not signing free agents. 😅

And yet here you are adding to it…

I work for a large government agency and one day someone accidentally sent an email to the entire agency (30,000+ people). People started sending reply-all emails saying things like "You accidentally sent this to me." Then people started angrily sending reply-all emails saying "DON'T REPLY-ALL!" but they were sending reply-all emails too. It became a vicious cycle, and by the end, I had received 500 emails because of this one accidentally sent email.😅

My Aunt and Uncle live in the middle of Illinois. You go 110 miles East your in Indiana and 85 miles west your in Iowa. How bout Iowa? Is that similar to Indiana?

That's rough. I'm 150 miles from Indiana, but only 15 miles from St. Louis, so it's easy to get out of Illinois. 😂

When I've driven through Iowa, it feels like a safer and less populated Indiana.

I’m taking a stab at this without looking and as a geography teacher I sure hope I’m right:

The flattest state is Florida. And Delaware is in the top 5.

It looks like Delaware is between 6-8 depending upon the metrics used. Indiana was either 7 or 10 in the lists I found. Florida is always #1. Illinois is always #2.

Who the packers? No I seldom see any hate towards the Packers.

on this forum, it’s these in order,

    Patriots

    Steelers

    Tennessee

    Jax

    Houston

    Raiders

those are typically the teams we hate as colts fans.

I think the Houston hate is above Jacksonville. Also, I think the Ravens deserve to be on the list. I've had a lot of old salty Baltimore people say terrible things to me for no reason. I didn't move the team! 😂

Is Indiana Flat with lots of Farmfields as well? Is it similar to Illinois?

Illinois is the 2nd flattest state in the US.

I believe Indiana is 7th. Southern Indiana has more hills.

Being from Indiana and now living in Illinois, I can say Illinois is the worst.

I think Evan Hull is good. I like what I saw from him.

I liked him in the combine when he finished his drill all the way to the end zone when he didn't have to. Shows he's driven. I think he'll be an excellent backup to JT.

  15. I'm confused. Did I not watch the same QB that everyone else did? To think that Minshew is better than AR is the most hilariously ridiculous opinion. I would think it was a joke if I didn't know how absolutely insane our fan base can be at times.

You want my opinion? If AR is healthy from here on out, I guarantee he will be in talks for winning MVP multiple times in his career. Come at me! 😉

Water under the bridge.  What’s done is done.  Don’t cry. Over spilled milk.

That’s all the cliches I can think of, at the moment.  It’s 2024.

I've been 100% on AR being our franchise QB even before we drafted him, but I don't see anything wrong with looking back to critique the past to ensure you don't repeat it. God forbid in three years Anthony decides to retire after another bad injury, I would hope Irsay and Ballard would try to swing for another early pick QB rather than signing a 38 year old Kirk Cousins to limp along.

...he should be thanking his lucky stars with Irsay being a patient owner after having 1 playoff win in 7 years with no division titles. Texans, Titans and Jaguars have all won a division title while Ballard was GM.

I've been a Ballard defender, but this fact is a massive indictment on his tenure. The second Luck retired, we should've put some random kid in at QB to get the #1 pick. I was always against his plan of putting in old used QBs to try and win. I would rather have had one terrible season over seven years of disappointment.

Unpopular opinion,  MHJ is overrated.  I would rather have Odunze or Nabers

I obviously would love Marv for the nostalgia, but I agree that Nabers will be better. He's unreal.

Yep. If you’re in downtown, get out of there by nightfall. Last time I was in Indy was for a pacers game last year. It ended about 10p or so, while we were leaving, gun shots bout two or three blocks up from the field house. Cops, ambulances all went screaming by. Luckily we stayed at the hotel across the street from the field house so our walk was short.

Dang. Has it really gotten that bad? I worked half a block from the Fieldhouse, but I moved in 2016. I worked until 1am many nights and never really felt unsafe.

It’s been one of my criticisms of Ballard. Sometimes you just take the guy with college production who has good college stats.

Puka didn't have mind-blowing stats in college though. Maybe Keon Coleman is the next Puka. Numbers don't wow you and his combine was downright slow for a WR, but he ran faster in the gauntlet drills than anyone because he trusts his hands and his body. Disciplined WR who is always where he should be, and just catches the ball. Maybe Ladd McConkey is that too.

Not really good draft compensation if it’s a team picking in the low twenties. And I doubt Pittman would leave for a team that wasn’t considered in Super Bowl contention.

I think we can get a true #1 with our #15 pick. I think at least a few of the top 5 corners fall to the low 20s. If we can get a MPJ replacement and a #1 corner, that would be a great draft.

Hey!   I’ve been driving mostly Corolla’s for years.   They’re reliable and dependable.   My current is a hybrid and I’m getting 52 miles per gallon!    A little respect please!

Same! I think MPJ is a Corolla. Not gonna win in a race, but he's reliable for a long time and gets you where you want to go.
