  1. My biggest issue with AR so far is that is looks more wildly inaccurate throwing than he did at any portion in the four games he started in 2023.  The stats bear that out as he is currently (through 3 full games, 11 less pass attempts from last year) at an awful 49% completion percentage compared to 59% last year.

I remember reading somewhere that the team was extra cautious with him ramping up his throwing after he was cleared medically.  Perhaps, a repercussion of this was it cost him the reps, time, opportunity necessary to practice, improve his mechanics in the offseason on those intermediate throws that seems to be the main source of the struggles currently.

Regardless of the source, it needs to be fixed and hopefully we see the improvement as the season progresses.

  2. It’s only been two games and the run defense has undoubtedly been terrible so far, but there is larger sample size with this same group of players which indicates the run defense shouldn’t be this bad for the entirety of the season.  There’s no place to go but up from here, right?

The issue that is more concerning to me is even in the limited number of clear passing situations they have encountered, the pass rush and coverage looks every bit as problematic as last year.  That’s a probably equally a scheme and talent issue to me.

This Sunday, there may be some opportunities for the Bears to get some large pass plays over the top on early down and distances especially if the Colts are forced to have fronts, focus on the run in order to reverse what we have seen so far.

  3. Ballard should have been let go after 2022 and let a new GM and coach start fresh at that time.   Ideally, in my opinion, Ballard is probably best suited to be an assistant GM type who focuses mostly on draft scouting and helping finalize a team's draft board. He lacks the necessary aggressiveness it takes to build a winning team in the NFL.

That being said, I do think any criticism of the front office over the past several years should also be directed at Jim Irsay who, has gotten odd, bizarre over the past several years IMO and I think it has carried over to how he runs the team.

Increasingly, I wonder if the reason Ballard has so much leash with Irsay is because he is perfectly fine with letting Jim interject himself into certain personnel decisions instead of leaving those matters solely to the football people that were hired as it perhaps was during the Bill Polian era.  In return, Ballard gets job security and no real accountability for his decisions/results.

I'll say this: If AR doesn't improve on how he overthrows people over the middle, then he isn't going to be able to be a consistent starting QB in the NFL. Beyond being inaccurate, those throws are easy to pick off and that's probably the worst thing a QB can do when it comes to losing a game for his team. We know that AR has the tools to win any game for his team, but he must learn how to be that game manager as well.

    100% agree.

I would classify what you are describing as what is winning quarterback play in the NFL along with being able to read defenses quickly and correctly to know where to go with the ball in the pocket, when to bail on pocket and scramble and still keep composure to diagnose what’s available downfield.  Ultimately there is an art to playing the position well.

There is no doubt in my mind that if we had more of a veteran presence at quarterback playing today ( like Gardner Minshew), we probably win this game. But that really doesn’t help this franchise in the long run as I think the team with someone like that the quarterback is capped out at best as a wildcard team, possible second round of the playoffs.

That’s ultimately why we have to keep playing Richardson and focus on his development over the next one – two years.

  5. Bad loss…no way to sugar coat it.  We all knew what the Packers were going to do and they still did it.

If we’re being honest, some of the expectations/predictions that were being thrown out there like winning the division, 10+ games were unrealistic. We are essentially starting what amounts to a rookie quarterback who is very raw and inexperienced. Keep in mind that even Peyton Manning, who was as pro ready as anybody coming out of college, threw 28 interceptions and went 3-13 as a rookie.

If the first two games have shed light on anything, it’s that our defense is nowhere near good enough to carry a team into playoff contention.  After eight years, that’s completely on Chris Ballard. He has his guys in here and has doubled down on a lot of them with extensions, not making supplementary moves.

Best thing out of this year is watching Richardson’s development and seeing if he can be more consistent as a passer especially with mid-level throws because that’s ultimately what’s going to win in the NFL.

The shame of this is that we’re wasting some good years by Johnathan Taylor the last few seasons who I think is as good of Home run hitter/chunk play generator at RB as there is in the league.

Matt Lafleur shook hand with Gus and thanks him for his defense. haha

this game was ultimately lost in the first half when they were running the ball at will and basically put us in a hole.

Steichen then reverted to an some unwarranted aggressive mindset on certain decisions, Richardson felt he had to play hero ball with some of his decision-making on pass progressions and it leads to a very disappointing loss

And how is that working out for the Panthers?

You’re misunderstanding my point..they could’ve had Stroud with that no 1 pick

If Ballard is as good of Talent evaluator as everyone says, don’t you think he has a better chance of hitting a homer on the quarterback selection if he has all choices available to him as opposed to when two of the four top rated quarterbacks are already off the board?

Maybe the question you should be asking is how is selecting Stroud working out for the Texans?

Would you rather have Levis?  He was the other option last year because they had no choice but to take a QB last year.  I didnt like AR coming out of college either but they really had no other choice unless you wanted Levis.

They could’ve traded up to the no 1 pick as a team below them (Panthers) did.

Ballard just didn’t want to because he values his draft picks too much and likes to play “smartest guy in the room”.
