I’m not a big trade-up guy, but I’d rather have Edmunds there at 10. It would however add two great defensive studs to a defense that needs it.
If Smith or Edmunds are there, it would take more I think to trade up. The Raiders need a LB and will be trading out of the first round where one will be.
-
1) Saquon Barkley, CLE
2) Josh Rosen, NYG
3) Sam Darnold, NYJ
4) Josh Allen, CLE
5) Bradley Chubb, DEN
6) Tremaine Edmunds, IND
7) Minkah Fitzpatrick, TB
8) Quenton Nelson, CHI
9) Derwin James, SF
10) Roquan Smith, OAK

This is all situational of course. Everything you’re going to read depends on whether we trade back, where we trade back to, if Chubb or Barkley are there at 6, and who Ballard has ranked higher on his board.
In this rant, I’m assuming three things:
1) Barkley and Chubb are off the board
2) Ballard wants to go ILB if his first few options are gone
3) Noone offers to trade up
I think the only way we trade back is if Chicago, Buffalo, or Miami all offer something worth taking:
-Bears give us Howard and trade firsts (maybe an additional later pick)
-Bills give us their firsts and a third to move up to 6
-Miami trades firsts with us and gives us their 2nd this year and 2019 1st rd pick
Now, onto what I believe will happen in the top 5:
1) Josh Allen, CLE, which I believe will be a mistake. He’s bad under pressure and the Browns offensive line isn’t very good.
2) Saquon Barkley, NYG; take advantage of Browns taking QB rather than smarter choice of Barkley
3) Sam Darnold, NYJ
4) Bradley Chubb, CLE; they may miss out on Barkley, but Chubb isn’t a terrible replacement
5) Josh Rosen, DEN
This is how the top 5 plays out in my mind, all of those teams needing a QB either due to lack of, or Manning, who will retire soon.
We will most likely get calls for our pick, but only the teams I have already mentioned and the ransom I have (or more) will get the deal done. Ballard will assess the risk of missing out on his guy, who I believe is either Tremaine Edmunds or Roquan Smith.
But who should he take, and what if he doesn’t make the right choice based on best fit?
First off, I think if we decide to go linebacker, the best pick hands down is Edmunds. His measurements and tests border into the obscene. He is bigger than Roquan, he is a true Mike backer, unlike Smith, who would be our Will, and has an endless ceiling.
Edmunds faults are with his mental game. Stepping up too early, getting caught in the wash, faked out by half-hearted play action. This is where Smith is better.
Smith is a much better technician to the game than Edmunds is, and he’s elite speed to cut off outside runs and cover on passing downs. His highlights show his ability, but only in the right system. I am worried that I’m our system, with an incomplete defense, may prove to be a misfit for Smith.
Smith gets washed out by offensive lineman, completely ineffective on inside runs if he’s blocked. Edmunds will not have that issue at 6’5 253lbs vs. Smith at 6’0 233lbs.
I think Edmunds is an overall better fit to our system. He’s big, fast, he can cover. He also has a lot to learn. It will be a good test for Eberflus, and as a well-liked ex-LB coach, Edmunds couldn’t be in better hands. We need to see that these new coaches can develop talent. Just because they are new doesn’t mean we should be lulled to sleep. We need to see them work, but so far all I’ve heard is good vibes. Hopefully it transitions all the way to the season.
Who do you think we take? Why?
This is up for debate, so I leave it open as such. Critiques and additional information/corrections welcome.

In a weird way... I think Minkah might actually be a great fit at CB for Tampa 2. He is physical, has great instincts and sheds blocks seamlessly. I just don't know if Ballard will be willing to spend a premier pick on a zone corner.
I agree. We need either Chubb or R. Smith to be our pick. Edmunds would work too, but we 100% need a defensive leader and we have the perfect opportunity to do so.

I'd rather keep Luck at this point. He may very well never be the same again, but I don't see anybody in this draft even close in comparison. I'll take my chances that Luck makes it back.
A bad Luck is better than all these prospects.
Mans he probably won’t be bad, so I’m keeping Luck no matter what if I’m Ballard

His instincts and processing are trash right now compared to Roquan's. Seriously, watch their tape back to back. It is night and day. Though Edmunds did seem to improve in this area towards the end of the year.
I don't really want a player who COULD be special so long as they develop. There are plenty of safer bets to choose from at 6. If we trade down to 11 or 12 and he's still there, I'd be much more willing to take the gamble. I just worry Ballard will get enamored with his elite traits and will take him over superior players.
I don’t think Ballard would make any rash moves. Taking Hooker was a slam dunk pick. I don’t remember watching a safety with the same skilled, calm catching and covering ability as him on the Colts in awhile.

Corners or linebackers. We let Melvin go and we really don’t know for sure how good Quincy Wilson is. We need both, let’s put it that way
-
I don’t think the Browns go QB first since they have a chance of missing out on Chubb and Barkley. It’s very unlikely, but they are a few players away from being relevant, and even a threat to contend in the playoffs.

Just curious, what corner out of college fits into our new scheme best?? I know Oliver is a talented corner, but he plays press man. Could he still work and would a player like Josh Jackson fit better into our scheme? Help

This is a team with a LARGE NUMBER of needs.... using the top-2 rounds to try and fix the O-line might not be necessary.
This. I’ve seen some mocks with Ridley and even Sutton falling into the 2nd round. I think it’s very unlikely, but there is talent at other positions to be had in the 2nd round. Linebacker should be addressed round 1, Smith or Edmunds, whoever Ballard prefers. Edmunds is a monster athlete with size, something that can’t really be coached.
In round 2, CB, WR, DL, RB, you name it. I think it should go like this in round 2:
1) WR, OG, CB
2) CB, OG, Edge
3) DL, OG, CB

It’s so weird we have back to back picks. I want to know how the 2nd guy drafted of those two is gonna feel.... happy, but salty?

And personaly, I feel John Simon should be tried at MLB during camp, where he may flourish.
Simon does have a nose for the ball. Excellent at pursuing and getting off blocks.

I'd go Penny in the 4th.
3rd. He’s gone by the 4th. I’d take Lenny over Michel and Chubb because he has the most success of the three when contacted at or before the los? That will happen a lot with our line so might as well take the back that excelled at making the most out of it.

Sub Penny for Nick Chubb and it's a deal!
I would agree, sub Penny for Chubb. Otherwise, I'm OK with this one.
I personally like Penny over Chubb, but a case can be made for both

I would rather take Isaiah Oliver than Josh Jackson. Better length and technician.
-
We shouldn’t be talking about QBs. We have a starter and backup.

If we get Isaiah Oliver, I’ll be happy. Billy Price is a good option, not sure who else. Just draft starters or rotational players. That’s what we need

Really it’s year 2. Last year Ballard made the first year changes. Time to see him work from there.

The thing is...I think CHI only makes this deal to move up and ensure they get Nelson. They need an OG and Nelson played his college ball nearby...seems like a perfect fit.
I guess it would still be possible to get Chubb, but if not, there are other elite talents to take as well.
-
If we traded for Howard and ended up with Nelson, I’d say it was possibly the most ingenious strategy ever in the draft.
Ballard already got us 2 2nd rounders for this year and the one next year. It remains to be seen if this rumor runs true or not.

There was already a topic on this a few months ago, new pff info though. I’m sure he was better, just didn’t play a whole lot. The only thing I remember about TJ a was how awful his man to man was. Dude has like a 50 overall in man.
-
He needs work on his footwork, but good to keep him. Wasn’t injured at all last year, he could always improve his skills.

Can't wait to get Hooker back on the field.
You know what I saw in that video?
I saw Quincy Wilson looking pretty good in that early game against ARI.
Pagano really held that kid back, cant wait to see him be unleashed as well.
He was hurt but yeah, I wish Wilson played more. Just glad he didn’t and tear his ACL or something.

Wow, I forgot how good this kid is. If he hadn't been hurt he might have gotten ORPY or at least been in the running. Cant wait to get him back on the field to help this defense.

Draft Situation: Edmunds or Smith if....

That’s because I’m assuming Ballard wants to draft a guard later and get a defensive playmaker/leader. Either a WILL in Smith or MIKE in Edmunds.
