  1. I think you have to apply the same logic to Brown as you did Rob Morris. Brown is a slasher, a player to run the stretch. He is a specialist. I don't know that anyone envisioned him playing like Delone Carter and taking it between the tackles on every play. But the problems with the offensive line have really hurt what Donald can do. But you can see if he gets a small hole, he is gone. He reminds me so much of Robert Smith, while he was with the Viking.

The guy that worries me is Hughes because when i see him play, he seems to give half effort. No spins, no moves. It is like his whole approach is "I will go at this guy straight on and try to get around him". He isn't strong enough to go over them. He has ability but just doesn't seem to go all out like Mathis and Freeney do.

Gonzalez. Tough one. Do you call a guy a bust that gets hurt? He is a very good player.

And I do agree with the person who said a draft is the whole draft. Polian has been great at finding mid to late round gems.

  2. I agree with you completely. I don't understand why we just don't run more. That will give Painter more options when he does throw. I don't understand that this year or probably the last five years. We seem to give up on running so easily, even in games where it is obviously working very well.

  3. For me, a good coach is one who can get the most out of the least amount. It always surprises me when a coach will become a coordinator of a good team with good players and then be promoted to HC somewhere because his side did well. Spagnola had a loaded defensive line on the Giants. Frazier had a very good defensive line with the Vikings. No wonder they did well!!! I am more impressed with how Belichick can put up so many points with mediocre WRs. Or how Jim Harbaugh can come in and get SF to play beyond their talent level. That is how I just a good coach.

  4. I disagree with the idea that we need to hire a defensive minded coach. Sean Payton was considered an offensive guru and does great stuff, but he was smart enough to bring in Williams as DC. Both Jim Mora and Tony Dungy were defensive minded coaches. Mora was before becoming a HC with the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL. I just would like to see some creativity. Belichick seems to gameplan better than about anyone. He will change that team around from week to week to combat who they are playing.

  5. This line just disqualified you from having a real conversation on the topic.

You do realize that schemes don't ever really change, right? Maybe a few wrenches here and there, but any defense can survive in this league with the right personnel. If you want a defense to be dominant, you absolutely can't spend picks and good money on the offense. It's as simple as that. We just don't have the personnel to make it work right now. Changing the scheme would do NOTHING to improve this defense on it's own. It's all about coaching and the personnel.

People love the Packers defense because they blitz. Nothing more, nothing less. They have been pretty awful this year too, and are 30th overall in total defense.

The Steelers? Last in the league in generating turnovers, and giving up 108 yards per game on the ground. I thought they were impossible to run against...

The Ravens allowed the TERRIBLE Jaguars offense to move the ball pretty well most of the night. Ironically, it was Jacksonville running the "out-dated" Tampa 2 that shut down the 8th ranked offense of the Ravens.

How about the Chargers? Giving up 122 rushing yards per game and 23 points. Awesome having that 3-4, eh?

The Jets, loaded with defensive talent, also running that mighty 3-4, are 18th in total defense despite being relatively healthy.

Why are we last in total defense? Well, we just gave up 2 games worth of offense in one shot to the Saints (who haven't exactly been slouches this year in that category), we're loaded with injuries, and our offense goes off the field after failing on 3rd down like clockwork. They have a ton of pressure on them, as a result, and are on the field for way too long. If our offense could move the chains with regularity, and could stop fumbling, we might be able to keep them fresh.

Yeah, you are right. I am a football coach, although only at the high school level. So I guess my comment how the system is the problem disqualifies me. Bottom line is the Colts don't have the personnel to play a 3-4. So they have to play 4-3. However, IMHO they would be far better off playing more of a press or bump at the corners and have the linebackers not drop in coverage first. Cincinnati doesn't have great personnel on their defense, yet have a very highly ranked defense. Why? Their defensive scheme fits their personnel better.

So, I disagree with you. The system has everything to do with it. With the personnel on this team, the Tampa-2 doesn't work. It is like on offensive trying to run a spread offense with two good WRs. Wouldn't work well. Play to your strengths.

  6. But I believe his 5 year deal has an out clause before next season. I read that somewhere.

Disagree with you on Rob Ryan. Tony Dungy was a defensive coach, and it made no difference. The system is what is bad, not the coach. The Tampa-2 is past its time.

  7. From a basic level, the defensive scheme doesn't make any sense. The idea is to get as much pressure on the QB as possible that someone makes a mistake. The problem is, if a QB can throw a quick slant, it negates all that the Cover-2 can do. I think what we see is 10 years ago the Cover 2 was good because you still had teams playing an H-Back. But now so many teams play some type of shotgun/spread that you simply cannot get to the QB before they throw the short pass. Peyton showed that in the SB win against the Bears. You can nickel and dime all day long.

What Ii would like to see is the corners playing more press on the outside. Bump and run. Do something to slow the receivers down or off their routes, so Mathis and Freeney have more time. Yeah, maybe you will give up a big play here or there, but that has be easier on a defense then 10 play drives of being destroyed by 5-7 yard passes.

  8. I think Gruden would be the perfect coach for the Colts. He has a good offensive mind based on the west coast offense. He ran into some problems in Tampa because he maybe isn't the best personel guy. But with Polian in place, he doesn't need to be. Get rid of this vanilla offense and put in an offensive with a few more wrinkles. Look at how well his brother has done with the Bengals. I know he has long admired Peyton and would love to work with him. And he definitely brings some passion to the game.

I, personally, would prefer him over Fisher.

Whoever coaches the team, I do hope they can that Cover-2 defense. That worked fine 10 years ago when you still had many H-Backs. But with so many teams basically paying a spread offense, you it doesn't work. Too many holes underneath.

Who do you all think of Gruden as the next coach?

  9. Ok, with all the gloom and doom, I have to have a laugh out of this. Long before Bill Polian, there was a time when people said COLTS stands for Count On Losing This Sunday. So I was thinking what it could stand for now, besides that. So I put this forward

    Caldwell

    Offers

    Little

    Team

    Strategies

  10. I agree with firing Caldwell. At this point, what is there really to lose???? Bring in Mel Kiper has coach!! lol Seriously, why not give Tressel a try. What has Caldwell succeeded at? He was a failed college coach who hung onto Dungy coattails as a pro and that readied him? I think once Manning is back, a wooden Indian could coach the team into the the playoffs. But right now, we need a real coach to actual win games. The game planning is just horrible!

  11. If you look at the last couple of years, how many Colts games are life and death until the last drive? The defensive being ripped apart?

I honestly thinking if Manning were playing, people would be talking about the improved Colts this year. The better running attack. The better run support. The defense wouldn't be ripped as bad because the offense would move the ball more and hold onto it longer. The Tampa-2 defense run as been a problem for years. Just with no offensive scoring, it makes it so much worse.

  12. Other than Peyton Manning, I don't think much has changed at all. I think if Peyton were playing, we would probably be 5-2. These problems were always here. The days of the Colts blowing out teams have been gone for years. It has been coming down to the last drive. Without Peyton, we aren't winning those games.

  13. But the system does have a lot to do with it. I am not saying the Colts have the best talent in the NFL. But there is no reason they shouldn't be at least a 500 team. They have more talent then teams with better records. Do the 49ers have better overall talent? Do the Bengals? I think we just have bad systems and bad coaching. If Alex Smith can suddenly be so effective by a simply change of offensive system, we could do better as well.

  14. Some of the players you mention arent stars at all... Conner isnt any star, Nor is Pat though i really like him, neither is Collie.. the colts have only a few early round pics starting on their defense.. they have a young secondary.. but they do not have that talent on the defense to stop the run or the pass... for 5 plus years this defense have been preaching gap duties and they still cant stop the run... the colts do not have that talent.. A CB that can cover and hold his own.. the colts do not have that.. a LB that can cover, recognize the play and make the tackle the colts do not have that.

Yes they have freeney and mathis but they cannot stop the run and sometimes they only hurt the team when pass rushing... BUT thats how the colts play defense and until something changes, your gonna be stuck with UDFA's starting and the same old scheme.

Do you know why teams are successful? your Oline and Dline, the colts Oline was better obviously at the start of the year.. but the defense has been in shambles, its not because of coaching... and thats one spot i will stand on... Caldwell is a horrible coach but he is not the reason why the players arent producing... the colts are consistently being pushed off the line, thats definitely not because of coaching.

Well, I'm not saying they're stars, but they are good, young players in some cases. My point is we have some very good players. At least enough talent to win games. This is nothing new to me, because I have felt this for years. When we get to the playoffs and average like 14 points a game offensively, there is something wrong. But Manning hitting Harrison, Wayne, and Clark covers up many problems.
